Background: Teratomas are belonging to a group of germ cell tumors. It is also referred to as dermoid cyst. Teratomas are most common germ cell tumor of the ovary. Teratomas are composed of various histological types. In this article we are presenting various morphological patterns, its clinical manifestation and its clinical significance.Methods: This is prospective study for a period of 3 years from March 2016 to February 2019 at tertiary care hospital. It consists of total evaluation of 82 cases of ovarian lesions which were surgically excised for clinically or radiologically suspected of ovarian neoplasm.Results: A total of 82 cases of ovarian specimen were included out of which 18 cases were of ovarian teratoma. In these 17 cases were benign teratomas, 1 case of immature teratoma. All the cases of mature teratoma were predominantly of cystic type with focal solid areas. Right sided ovary was involved in44.5% cases while left sided in 55.5% cases. The tumor size ranges from 2.5 cm to 20.8 cms. The age range in this study was from 20 to 60 year. The common age observed for ovarian teratoma was in group of 31-40 years, having 6 cases. The clinically most of cases were asymptomatic or presented with unexplained abdominal pain or palpable mass. USG finding in most of cases were diffuse or partial echogenic mass lesion with cystic nature and echogenic bands.Conclusions: In our study showed mature cystic teratoma is the most common type of ovarian teratomas. The immature and monodermal types are rare. The histopathological examination plays important role in final diagnosis   and patient management.

Ovarian teratomas are the most common germ cell tumors and are classified as mature, immature and malignant.Mature cystic teratomas, also called dermoid cysts, are the most common germ cell tumour, accounting for upto 70% of benign ovarian masses in the reproductive years and 20% in postmenopausal women.Immature ovarian teratoma affects primarily younger patients and mature cystic teratomas seen in reproductive age groups. This case report provides a brief summary of the clinicopathological features of the ovarian teratomas such as, the immature teratoma which being a rare tumour was diagnosed in a 15 year old adolescent girl, managed surgically by laparotomy followed by chemotherapy, and the other case of a benign mature cystic teratoma in an elderly 52 year old postmenopausal woman, managed surgically although benign cystic teratomas are rare in the postmenopausal age group.

Introduction: Germ cell tumors are a group of tumors with different clinical presentation and histological and biological characteristics. Malignant germ cell tumors occur at all ages with a trend of bimodal distribution in infancy and adolescence. Objective: To evaluate the demographic characteristics, distribution of different types of germ cell tumor, treatment modalities and outcome of germ cell tumor in children in a tertiary care hospital of Bangladesh. Methods: In this retrospective study, data regarding age and sex distribution, location, types of tumors, management of germ cell tumor in children were retrieved from the medical records of pediatric oncology department in NICRH, Dhaka from 2008 to 2014. Results: Out of total 87 patients female were 50 and male 37. Most of the patients were up to 5 years of age. The gonadal germ cell tumors (80%) were more than extragonadal tumor (20%) in both male and female patients. The most common germ cell tumor was dysgerminoma (32%) followed by yolk sac tumor (29.8%) and teratoma (19.5%). Yolk Sac Tumor (51.4%) was the most common in male and dysgerminoma (56%) the commonest in female. Out of 87, seventy two (82.7%) received chemotherapy following surgery. Among those 72 patients who received chemotherapy 49 (68 %) patients completed their treatment. Until the last follow up 71.4% patients remained alive and tumor free. Conclusion: Germ cell tumors are the most variable tumor of all childhood malignancies that has difference in age, sex, location and histological subtypes. Gonadal tumors have better prognosis than extragonadal tumors in both the sex. DS (Child) H J 2019; 35(2) : 119-122

Abstract BACKGROUND: Ovarian tumors are one of the leading cancers in females with variable pathological types. This study describes the distribution, clinical and pathological details of various histopathological types of ovarian tumors in a tertiary care hospital in North India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective data of 3 years were collected for ovarian tumors submitted to the pathology department of a tertiary care hospital. Data were classified according to the latest World Health Organization (WHO) Classification into epithelial tumors, germ cell tumors, sex cord–stromal tumors, and others. RESULTS: A total of 212 cases of ovarian tumors were studied, 186 were unilateral and 26 were bilateral. Resection specimen, part of specimen, and block review formed 80.2%, 15.1%, 4.7%, respectively. Epithelial tumors formed the majority in 71.7% of cases followed by germ cell tumors (22.2%), sex cord–stromal tumors (3.8%) and others (2.3%). Maximum number of cases in the respective groups occurred in the age groups 31–40, 21–30, 51–60, and 41–50 years, respectively. Overall, benign tumors were 63.7%, malignant tumors were 31.1%, and borderline were 5.2%. The most common histopathological type of benign and malignant tumor was benign serous cystadenoma (18.8%) and serous carcinoma (9.9%), respectively. CONCLUSION: In the present study, ovarian tumors were classified according to the WHO classification, epithelial and germ cell tumors were the major types of ovarian tumors. Benign epithelial tumor formed the majority with 46.2% cases. Serous cystadenoma and mature cystic teratoma were the predominant type of epithelial and germ cell tumors, respectively.

BACKGROUNDSimultaneous intracranial and testicular germ cell tumors (GCTs) are extremely rare, leading to a lack of adequate experience in their treatment. Therefore, the authors report a case of this kind of GCT.OBSERVATIONSA 5-year-old boy was admitted to the hospital with headache and vomiting. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging suggested the possibility of a GCT in the pineal region. The value of the serum tumor marker alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) was 5,396.1 μg/L, and β-human chorionic gonadotropin levels were within the normal range. Subsequently, the tumor was removed, and the final pathological result was a mixed GCT. Therefore, chemotherapy and radiation were added. However, the authors found a testicular tumor on ultrasound at the same time, and pathology after surgery suggested a mature cystic teratoma. Following treatment, the patient recovered well, and AFP levels dropped to normal values.LESSONSTo the authors’ knowledge, this report is the fourth case of simultaneous intracranial and testicular GCTs and the first case of a simultaneous mixed GCT in the pineal region and mature teratoma of the testis. A combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy for mixed GCTs in the pineal region and surgical excision for testicular reproductive cell tumors are effective in these patients, but long-term monitoring is required.

Teratomas are a common form of germ cell tumor. Teratomas are commonly found in the gonadal organs, such as the ovaries and testes. Treatment of choice for ovarian teratomas is complete surgical excision, which exhibits a good prognosis in benign teratomas; however, chemotherapy treatment is needed for malignant components. Neurological paraneoplastic presentation of gynecological tumors is rare; however, ovarian tumors account for 10% of this presentation. In literature, paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis, anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis, and paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration have been reported in ovarian teratomas and tumors; however, myasthenia gravis has been reported only twice. In both of those cases, manifestation of myasthenia gravis was preceding the diagnosis of ovarian cancer. We describe the first case of a 21-year-old female who presented with new-onset myasthenia gravis after finishing chemotherapy for ovarian teratoma. Another unusual aspect of our case is the rare co-occurrence of gliomatosis peritonei with mature teratoma.

Two or more histological types characterize more than 60% of testicular germ cell tumors (GCTs). Burned-out testicular tumor refers to partial or complete histological regression of the primary testicular lesions. The most frequent GCT type involved in this kind of histological regression is choriocarcinoma, followed by embryonal carcinoma. To our knowledge, there are no cases of the burned-out phenomenon in teratoma. We report a case of a 19-year-old man presenting to our institute with a right testicular lesion, evidence of mediastinal and abdominal lymph node metastasis, and high levels of GCT serum biomarkers. After orchiectomy, the histopathological examination showed a mixed GCT: mature teratoma, immature teratoma, and histological features of testicular cancer regression (burned-out phenomenon). The patient underwent first-line chemotherapy (BEP regimen) which resulted in a complete instrumental and biochemical response after 4 cycles. Teratoma is considered a less aggressive type of GCT. In this particular case, metastatic disease seems to result from non-germ cell components which underwent early spontaneous regression.

Background: Germ cell tumors (GCTs) are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms, which occur in the gonads, and at extra gonadal sites of the body. The aim of the study was to observe the different histopathological patterns of various GCTs in the body at all possible sites and to know their IHC staining patterns.Methods: The study was conducted for a period of 5 years from 2015 to 2019 and was an observational study. The recorded data was compiled and entered in a spreadsheet and then exported to data editor of SPSS Version 20.0. Continuous variables were expressed as mean SD and categorical variables were summarized as frequencies and percentages. Graphically the data was presented by bar and pie diagrams Chi-square test or Fisher’s exact test was applied for comparing categorical values. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. All p values were 2 tailed.Results: A total of 93 cases were analyzed and the mean age of the patients was 27.8 years. Mature cystic teratoma was the most common histopathological variant and was mostly seen in the ovaries. There was a difference in age predilection of benign and malignant tumors. Most of the malignant GCTs were gonadal while EGCTs were likely to be benign. MGCTs (mixed GCTs) were mostly testicular in origin with only one MGCT being extragonadal.Conclusions: Mature cystic teratomas were the most frequent GCTs with frequent site being in ovaries. Out 0f 18 EGCTs only 2 were malignant, rest all were mature cystic teratomas.

: Two-month-old female presented with left loin swelling and pain. The swelling was 8cmx6cm and it was ballotable in nature. It was gradually increasing in size.: To find out the incidence of this rare, high index of suspicion, investigations including cytopathology and histopathology, early diagnosis and management.: The informed consent from the parents of the patient was taken. The study was carried out in a tertiary care hospital in Kolkata. On CT a heterogenous renal mass was detected. Fine Needle Aspiration cytology from the mass showed mature neural elements, squamous epithelium, mature fat cells a few atypical oval to spindle shaped cells. Cytologically diagnosed as mature teratoma. The tumor was excised. Histopathological examination revealed the diagnosis of immature teratoma. : Immature teratoma is one of the rare causes of Pediatric Kidney Tumor.Renal teratoma is an extremely uncommon tumor in infancy. But it is one of the differential diagnoses of renal mass in infants. Diagnosis may be suspected from radiological investigation and confirmed by histopathological examination. A good prognosis can be expected after proper management.

Introduction : Germ cell tumors arise from primordial germ cells and account for about 30% of all ovarian tumors. More than 95% of this group are benign dermoid cysts (mature cystic teratoma) and the remaining 5% are malignant. Ovarian teratomas represent 15% to 20% of ovarian germ cell tumors. Teratomas are classified as mature or immature and often consist of several embryological layers. While the mature type is benign, the immature type is more aggressive.Objective : Based on the above, this article will review about immature teratoma and mature cystic teratoma of the ovary. Material and methods : The method of writing this scientific paper is a literature review. The data used are sourced from relevant literature and in accordance with the topics discussed.Result : Teratomas are a common form of germ cell tumors. Teratomas are histologically defined as tumors containing tissue derived from all germ cell layers: ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. Teratomas are classified as immature teratoma, mature teratoma and monodermal teratoma. Conclusion : Teratomas are usually asymptomatic and if there are symptoms, they tend to be non-specific. In patients with no residual tumor after surgery, the survival rate is 90-100%.Keywords: Teratoma, Immature Teratoma, Mature Cystic Teratoma

Objective This study aimed to examine the clinicopathological characteristics, treatment, and prognostic factors in 12 cases of malignant transformation of mature cystic teratoma of the ovary (MCTO). Methods We performed a retrospective study of 12 patients with malignant transformation of MCTO who were admitted to the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University from 2003 to 2019. We examined case records, clinical parameters, and biological assessments. Results The median age of the patients was 56.5 years and seven of them were postmenopausal. The average tumor size was 18.5 cm. All patients had pelvic masses at their first hospital visit. Nine of the patients had discomfort in the lower abdomen, two presented with a lower abdominal palpable mass, and three were complicated by fever. The median follow-up time was 73 months (12‒193 months). Ten patients survived with a disease-free status and two died. Conclusions There is a low incidence of malignant transformation of MCTO, and its most common histological type is squamous cell carcinoma. Age and tumor size are important factors in malignant transformation of teratomas. While there is a lack of treatment guidelines for malignant transformation of MCTO, early diagnosis and treatment may be beneficial for these patients.
