Background: The depth of association between hypertension and serum uric acid remains a mystery. In order to know the exact association between hypertension and serum uric acid, authors intended to investigate the serum uric acid levels among hypertensive and non-hypertensive patients and, authors assessed whether hyperuricemia increases with increasing duration of hypertension and severity of hypertension.Methods: This case control study was conducted among hypertensive (Cases) and non-hypertensive patients (Controls) attending outpatient and inpatient department of general medicine in Sri Muthukumaran Medical College and Research Institute during January 2019 to March 2019. A total of hundred patients were included in this study with fifty cases and control each. Data was conducted using a proforma, covering particulars related to hypertension and the levels of serum uric acid were also noted in the same.  Data analysis was done using SPSS.Results: Hyperuricemia among cases and control was found to be statistically significant association with odds ratio of 3.7. Also, the study showed that the serum uric acid levels were significantly increased in patients with Stage 2 hypertension compared to stage 1 hypertension. Also, cases with longer duration of hypertension had significantly raised serum uric acid levels compared to cases with lesser duration of hypertension.Conclusion: Assessment of serum uric acid may be recommended for all the hypertensive cases.

Background: Preeclampsia (PE) is still one of the important causes of maternal and fetal mortality in Bangladesh. Many researches have been done to identify a unique screening test that would predict the risk of developing PE before the classic symptoms appear. One of the most accessible and easiest screening tests is serum uric acid measurement. Numerous studies have demonstrated a relation between elevated maternal serum uric acid levels and adverse maternal and fetal outcome. Among several pathophysiologic factors the most commonly accepted explanation for hyperuricemia in PE is increased reabsorption and decreased excretion of uric acid. Objective: The aim of the present study was to assess the association of serum uric acid with preeclampsia. Materials and method: A case control study was conducted in the department of Biochemistry, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka from July 2010 to June 2011. A total number of 100 pregnant women in third trimester of pregnancy attending in Obstetrics and Gynaecology department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital were selected purposively as study subjects. Among them 50 pregnant women with preeclampsia were selected as cases and 50 normal healthy pregnant women as controls. Results: Most of the study subjects were within 21 – 30 years of age group and mean age in case and control was 24.06±3.71 and 24.66±3.22 years respectively, which was not statistically different. Mean gestational age in case and control was 33.50±2.55 weeks and 33.60±2.95 weeks respectively, which was also not statistically different. Among the study subjects majority was primi in both groups (case 76%, contol 58%) showing no statistical significance. Majority of the subjects in both groups were irregular in their antenatal checkup (case 52%, contol 40%). Uric acid concentration was measured in all the study subjects. The mean serum uric acid concentration in cases and controls were 7.01±1.90 mg/dl and 4.55±1.63 mg/dl respectively. This difference was highly significant in statistical point of view. Abstract Background: Previous studies have shown that serum uric acid (SUA) and dyslipidemia are risk factors for stroke. However, it is not clear that whether dyslipidemia could modify the association between SUA and hemorrhagic stroke.Methods: We conducted a nested case-control study from “H-type Hypertension and Stroke Prevention and Control Project (HSPCP)” in China. A total of 355 first hemorrhagic stroke cases and 355 controls matched for age (± 1 years), sex and study site were included in the final data analysis. Logistic regression analysis were performed to assess the association between SUA and first hemorrhagic stroke.Results: In matched analysis, the risk of hemorrhagic stroke was associated with the increased SUA levels (OR:1.13, 95% CI:0.98 to 1.30). However, multiple regression analyses showed that per 1 mg/dL in SUA was associated with a 16% decreased risk of hemorrhagic stroke among participants without dyslipidemia and associated with a 28% increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke among dyslipidemia participants [without dyslipidemia: odds ratio (OR) = 0.84, 95% CI 0.65 to 1.09, with dyslipidemia: OR = 1.28, 95% CI 1.10 to 1.48; P Interaction <0.001]. The results of the subgroup analysis were consistent with the main results.Conclusions: Elevated SUA was associated with increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke especially among participants with dyslipidemia. These findings suggest that we need to focus on SUA levels especially among participants with dyslipidemia.
