Self-adjustment of parameters can significantly improve the performance of evolutionary algorithms. A notable example is the (1 + (λ,λ)) genetic algorithm, where adaptation of the population size helps to achieve the linear running time on the OneMax problem. However, on problems which interfere with the assumptions behind the self-adjustment procedure, its usage can lead to the performance degradation. In particular, this is the case with the “one-fifth rule” on problems with weak fitness-distance correlation.We propose a modification of the “one-fifth rule” in order to have less negative impact on the performance in the cases where the original rule is destructive. Our modification, while still yielding a provable linear runtime on OneMax, shows better results on linear function with random weights, as well as on random satisfiable MAX-3SAT problems.

The article presents the results of studying the personal maturity of adolescents aged 13-17 (n=1078) who are infantilized in intergenerational relationships (on the model of relations with parents and teachers). Empirical data were collected with the use of the Self-Assessment Scale of Personal Maturity, as well as the modified Dembo-Rubinstein Self-Assessment Diagnostic Method, which measured the actual self-assessment of adolescents’ adulthood, as well as reflected assessments of their own adulthood from the parents’ and teachers’ positions. Infantilization in intergenerational relationships was assessed by comparing the self-assessment of adulthood and the reflected assessments of parents and teachers. The results show that the relationships between adolescents, on the one hand, and parents and teachers, on the other hand, are characterized by a tendency to infantilization. Obvious infantilization is found in about 10 % of cases. Infantilization in intergenerational relationships affects, first of all, the regulatory maturity of adolescents, and its influence differs depending on who is the subject of infantilization: in the case of infantilization by parents, the regulatory maturity of adolescents decreases as they grow up, while in the case of infantilization by teachers it increases. In general, infantilization in relations with parents has more intense negative impact on the formation of personal maturity in adolescence, in comparison with infantilization on the part of teachers.

Recently, a genetic-based random key generator (GRKG) for the one-time pad (OTP) cryptosystem has been proposed in the literature which has certain limitations. In this paper, two main characteristics (speed and randomness) of the GRKG method are significantly improved by presenting the IGRKG method (improved genetic-based random key generator method). The proposed IGRKG method generates an initial pad by using linear congruential generator (LCG) and improves the randomness of the initial pad using genetic algorithm. There are three reasons behind the use of LCG: it is easy to implement, it can run efficiently on computer hardware, and it has good statistical properties. The experimental results show the superiority of the IGRKG over GRKG in terms of speed and randomness. Hereby we would like to mention that no prior experimental work has been presented in the literature which is directly related to the OTP key generation using evolutionary algorithms. Therefore, this work can be considered as a guideline for future research.

So far, the basic knowledge about setting up the parameters of Evolutionary Algorithms stems from a lot of empirical work and few theoretical results. The standard guidelines for parameters such as crossover rate, mutation probability, and population size as well as the standard settings of the recombination operator and selection mechanism were presented in chapter 2 for the Evolutionary Algorithms. In the case of Evolution Strategies and Evolutionary Programming, the self-adaptation mechanism for strategy parameters solves this parameterization problem in an elegant way, while for Genetic Algorithms no such technique is employed. Chapter 6 served to identify a reasonable choice of the mutation rate, but no theoretically confirmed knowledge about the choice of the crossover rate and the crossover operator is available. With respect to the optimal population size for Genetic Algorithms, Goldberg presented some theoretical arguments based on maximizing the number of schemata processed by the algorithm within fixed time, arriving at an optimal size λ* = 3 for serial implementations and extremely small string length [Gol89b]. However, as indicated in section 2.3.7 and chapter 6, it is by no means clear whether the schema processing point of view is appropriately preferred to the convergence velocity investigations presented in section 2.1.7 and chapter 6. As pointed out several times, we prefer the point of view which concentrates on a convergence velocity analysis. Consequently, the search for useful parameter settings of a Genetic Algorithm constitutes an optimization problem by itself, leading to the idea of using an Evolutionary Algorithm on a higher level to evolve optimal parameter settings of Genetic Algorithms. Due to the existence of two logically different levels in such an approach, it is reasonable to call it a meta-evolutionary algorithm. By concentrating on meta-evolution in this chapter, we will radically deviate from the biological model, where no two-level evolution process is to be observed but the self-adaptation principle can well be identified (as argued in chapter 2). However, there are several reasons why meta-evolution promises to yield some helpful insight into the working principles of Evolutionary Algorithms: First, meta-evolution provides the possibility to test whether the basic heuristic and the theoretical knowledge about parameterizations of Genetic Algorithms is also evolvable by the experimental approach, thus allowing us to confirm the heuristics or to point at alternatives.

Abstract. Two experiments examined the influence of stories on recipients’ self-perceptions. Extending prior theory and research, our focus was on assimilation effects (i.e., changes in self-perception in line with a protagonist’s traits) as well as on contrast effects (i.e., changes in self-perception in contrast to a protagonist’s traits). In Experiment 1 ( N = 113), implicit and explicit conscientiousness were assessed after participants read a story about either a diligent or a negligent student. Moderation analyses showed that highly transported participants and participants with lower counterarguing scores assimilate the depicted traits of a story protagonist, as indicated by explicit, self-reported conscientiousness ratings. Participants, who were more critical toward a story (i.e., higher counterarguing) and with a lower degree of transportation, showed contrast effects. In Experiment 2 ( N = 103), we manipulated transportation and counterarguing, but we could not identify an effect on participants’ self-ascribed level of conscientiousness. A mini meta-analysis across both experiments revealed significant positive overall associations between transportation and counterarguing on the one hand and story-consistent self-reported conscientiousness on the other hand.

The company certainly wants to increase its sales and increase the number of its customers so that all efforts and methods are carried out, including in building consumer confidence, thus making these consumers become loyal customers or commonly referred to as customers. But on the one hand the trust built by the company actually has a negative impact, namely the emergence of distrust because the frequency of the company offers a variety of products that are sometimes not needed by consumers, this paper is made to answer these phenomena and problems in a concise manner.This research method is by analyzing criticism of several studies about trust that affect consumer loyalty which results in the absence of influence between trust in consumer loyalty.

This concluding chapter charts the continuing significance of the early postwar moment in Olson’s later work, particularly The Maximus Poems. The philosophical and political concerns of the American avant-garde between 1946 and 1951 play out across The Maximus Poems just as they inform later American art practices. The search of the early postwar American independent left for a source of political action rooted in the embodied individual is seen, on the one hand, to have been personified in the figure of Maximus. At the same time, Maximus’s radical ‘practice of the self’ charts a sophisticated alternative to the Enlightenment humanist subject widely critiqued in the United States in the immediate postwar period.

Urban wasteland is of special interest to city planners. However, to integrate such areas into city space management with consideration of nature conservation aspects, a sound assessment of their ecological potential is necessary. The aim of this paper was to analyze whether carabid beetle assemblages of the wastelands are affected by soil parameters, particularly trace element contamination. Therefore, we studied the carabid fauna in relation to selected soil parameters on 56 sampling plots situated in 24 wastelands located in the city of Warsaw (Poland). The results have confirmed our assumptions that the number of species, as well as the number of individual carabid beetles, are negatively affected by an increasing amount of pollutants in the soil. Particularly, the trace elements Pb, Cu, and Cd showed a significantly negative impact. The results are of value when it comes to the use of urban wastelands in the context of sustainable city development. Future use of urban wastelands will be faced with trade-offs between the use for public interests (e.g., housing space) and ecological interests. Phytoremediation and entomoremediation may be included in decontamination measures. The results of studies, such as the one conducted by us, may help to select the respective wastelands for certain purposes.

AbstractChanging a traditional company into a lean one is a very complex and time-consuming process that needs to be addressed in an appropriate way, otherwise the project of introduction of leanness into a company may fail on the one hand and even have a negative impact on business operations of the company on the other. When introducing a change, a step-by-step procedure leading to a progress may be of great help. The paper outlines a general procedure of leanness, an important part of which is a lean agent. A portfolio analysis is also used as a measure of leanness or as an indicator of the desired direction. The applied working methods were mainly active workshops and interviews with employees. The procedure has been tested on an example of a Slovene company; first, the existing situation is outlined, then the leanness steps taken according to the procedure and the final result after the first transition of the procedure.

AbstractComputational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulating is a useful methodology for reduction of experiments and their associated costs. Although the CFD could predict all hydro-thermal parameters of fluid flows, the connections between such parameters with each other are impossible using this approach. Machine learning by the artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm has already shown the ability to intelligently record engineering data. However, there are no studies available to deeply investigate the implicit connections between the variables resulted from the CFD. The present investigation tries to conduct cooperation between the mechanistic CFD and the artificial algorithm. The genetic algorithm is combined with the fuzzy interface system (GAFIS). Turbulent forced convection of Al2O3/water nanofluid in a heated tube is simulated for inlet temperatures (i.e., 305, 310, 315, and 320 K). GAFIS learns nodes coordinates of the fluid, the inlet temperatures, and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) as inputs. The fluid temperature is learned as output. The number of inputs, population size, and the component are checked for the best intelligence. Finally, at the best intelligence, a formula is developed to make a relationship between the output (i.e. nanofluid temperatures) and inputs (the coordinates of the nodes of the nanofluid, inlet temperature, and TKE). The results revealed that the GAFIS intelligence reaches the highest level when the input number, the population size, and the exponent are 5, 30, and 3, respectively. Adding the turbulent kinetic energy as the fifth input, the regression value increases from 0.95 to 0.98. This means that by considering the turbulent kinetic energy the GAFIS reaches a higher level of intelligence by distinguishing the more difference between the learned data. The CFD and GAFIS predicted the same values of the nanofluid temperature.
