Kyle Nuske’s narrative documents his gradual evolution as a critically-aware educator throughout his journey as a young, inexperienced eikaiwa teacher up to his present position as a university professor. He shows how he became increasingly aware of a number of questionable critical issues and assumptions in his particular eikaiwa teaching context and that his heightened consciousness of race, gender, and sexuality in ELT had a huge impact on developing professional identity. Additionally, he found that the pedagogical skill set cultivated during his time in eikaiwa aided him in introducing analysis of the same critical issues to his university students in a nuanced and respectful way.

The purpose of this research is to establish a connection between the effects of globalization on contemporary societies and the increase in individualist attributes in former collectivist societies. To achieve it, the chapter presents the study of the experiences of Russian students participating in academic mobility programs. A two-step survey conducted among the Russian university students reveals, by means of cultural dimension analysis, individualist attributes in their academic behavior while studying overseas and at a home university. The interest towards academic mobility programs expressed by the students of various years of study, their desire for independence and self-development as well as an enjoyable process of acquiring a diploma are examples of individualist attributes. The conclusion is made that individuals trying to find their place in a globalized world acquire more individualist attributes in their behavior and world perception.

The mass media of the first decades of the new millennium (the new media) are characterized not only by the paramount informing function but they are also distinguished by their ability to interact and influence the target audience in both spontaneous and dramatized modes. Simple navigation and a quick and easy accessto their content stand behind the increasing popularity of the new media among younger generation. Modern new media provide the discourse space where young people, or ‘the millennials’, feel as if they are in the center of various political, social and economic events; the so-called ‘Big Brothers’ having impact on people’s life in thesociety. Taking into account the facts that are directly connected with the existence of the youth in the media discourse space, this article aims to track and analyze the influence of the new media on the bachelor’s and master’s students’ professional selfconcept. Our research introduces the working hypothesis that today’s media discourse space affects both directly and indirectly on university students, no matter what their future specialization is. Our students’ survey was conducted in three Russian higher education institutions: Institute of philology and foreign languages, Moscow Pedagogical State University (MPSU, Moscow); Faculty of Science and Technology, South Ural State Humanitarian Pedagogical University (SUSHPU, Chelyabinsk); and Ecological faculty, Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN University, Moscow). The survey included the responses of the junior and senior bachelor’s students as well as the first- and the second-year master’s students. Young respondents were asked to evaluate the degree of the perceived information credibility, a positive and negativeimpact of present-day social networks on the younger generation and on their professional future; foreign languages and cultural knowledge; the students’ ability to interact with a foreign media discourse space, reading and leaving comments about different events in the Russian and foreign new media. Therefore, we established the correlation between the various types of variables that compose the system of the media discourse space and the students’ multiple reactions to their comprehension of the new media. The key influencing factors in the course of information exchange between students’ world perception and the media world were defined. The main conclusions about the extent of the new media influence (or its absence) on bachelor’s and master’s students and their professional development were drawn in the research. Keywords: new media, media discourse space, professional development, professional self-concept, undergraduate and graduate students

This study is devoted to the foreign language communicative competence development among non-linguistic universities under-graduate students. This research covered the issue of foreign language education based on the cognitive-conceptual model for teaching English to non-linguistic university students. As the main research method, pedagogical modelling was chosen. The experiment was conducted at Russian State Vocational Pedagogical University, Ural Federal University named after the first President of Russia B.N. Yeltsin, and Ural Institute of State Fire Service of EMERCOM of Russia among 72 undergraduate students. The results of several curriculum-based tests showed that the percentage of correct determination of expressions with the context available increased from 54% to 93.2% in EG1, and from 41.9 to 85.5% in EG2. The overall students’ understanding of lexical units increased by 39.2% and 43.6%, respectively. The ratio of misunderstanding/understanding of speech utterances increased from 15/7 to 6/16, while the proportion of students who do not use/use various interpretation strategies changed from 8/14 to 3/19. The developed cognitive-conceptual methodology effectiveness for teaching foreign language communicative competence was proven. It can be applied to train students of various specialisations at different university degree levels.
