Spatial analysis of sanitation services in the rural zone of Pombal, Paraíba State, Brazil

Abstract: Basic sanitation services that are provided to a considerable portion of the population living in rural areas have high deficit coverage. This paper aims at obtaining a diagnosis of access to sanitation services in the rural zones of Pombal, Paraíba State, Brazil. The methodology consisted of data analysing from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics through the Georeferenced Information System Estatcart and spatial information through QGIS 2.6.0. The results indicated that the residences coverage by water supply system, sewage system and solid waste collection, is considered inefficient, since they do not receive the services or have a coverage below 20%. It was also contacted a disproportionality of services between urban and rural areas in the municipality. The lack of sanitation affects the health of the population. Therefore, the diagnosis of access to sanitation services is seen as an important and necessary tool for the implementation of public policies that improve the quality of life of those who live in rural areas, as well as ensure the conservation of the environment.

The adequate provision of basic sanitation services is an essential condition for public health and quality of life of the population. The lack or insufficiency of sanitation services coverage may cause several externalities that could harm public health and social well-being. The purpose of this study was to elaborate a health indicator through the relationship between infant mortality rate, urban population and sanitation services coverage (such as piped water, solid waste collection, water supply and sewage). This was a documentary and exploratory study that utilized multivariate analysis techniques and efficiency criteria (r², Nash-Sutcliffe and root mean square error). The area covered by the study were the municipalities of the State of Pará, divided into six geographical mesoregions. The data related to the sanitation indicators, infant mortality rate until the age of 5 and urban population were obtained through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) website. The results indicate that the urban population variable in households without municipal solid waste collection showed lower significance in the health indicator. It was found that association between IS and basic sanitation services (explanatory variables), overall, is statistically well explained by r² and NASH, signaling that the statistical models are appropriate and efficient. It is concluded that the reduction of infant mortality is directly proportional to sanitation coverage.

Objectives: Population-level data are lacking for urinary incontinence (UI) in Central and Eastern European countries. Therefore, the objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence, bother, and behavior regarding treatment for UI in a population-representative group of Polish adults aged ≥ 40 years. Methods: Data for this epidemiological study were derived from the larger LUTS POLAND project, in which a group of adults that typified the Polish population were surveyed, by telephone, about lower urinary tract symptoms. Respondents were classified by age, sex, and place of residence. UI was assessed with a standard protocol and established International Continence Society definitions. Results: The LUTS POLAND survey included 6005 completed interviews. The prevalence of UI was 14.6–25.4%; women reported a greater occurrence compared with men (p < 0.001). For both sexes, UI prevalence increased with age. Stress UI was the most common type of UI in women, and urgency UI was the most prevalent in men. We did not find a difference in prevalence between urban and rural areas. Individuals were greatly bothered by UI. For women, mixed UI was the most bothersome, whereas for men, leak for no reason was most annoying. More than half of respondents (51.4–62.3%) who reported UI expressed anxiety about the effect of UI on their quality of life. Nevertheless, only around one third (29.2–38.1%) of respondents with UI sought treatment, most of whom received treatment. Persons from urban and rural areas did not differ in the degrees of treatment seeking and treatment receiving. Conclusion: Urinary incontinence was prevalent and greatly bothersome among Polish adults aged ≥ 40 years. Consequently, UI had detrimental effects on quality of life. Nonetheless, most affected persons did not seek treatment. Therefore, we need to increase population awareness in Poland about UI and available treatment methods, and we need to ensure adequate allocation of government and healthcare system resources.

Happiness is a subjective indicator of overall living conditions and quality of life. Recently, community- and national-level investigations connecting happiness and community satisfaction were conducted. This study investigated the effects of community satisfaction on happiness in Nepal. A factor analysis was employed to examine 24 items that are used to measure community satisfaction, and a multiple regression analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of these factors on happiness. In semi-urban areas, sanitation showed a positive relationship with happiness. In rural areas, edu-medical services were negatively related to happiness, while agriculture was positively related. Gender and perceived health were closely associated with happiness in rural areas. Both happiness and satisfaction are subjective concepts, and are perceived differently depending on the socio-physical environment and personal needs. Sanitation, agriculture (food) and edu-medical services were critical factors that affected happiness; however, the results of this study cannot be generalized to high-income countries.

The urban development and rapid urbanization that the West Bank, including occupied East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip have recently encountered have adversely affected the quality and availability of open spaces inside the Palestinian urban and rural areas. Public spaces are fundamental in the lives of any community striving to achieve a sustainable and inclusive environment and improve the quality of life of its inhabitants. In that respect, the prevailing planning practices fall short in terms of adequately addressing the provision of public spaces. Laws and regulations are designed to focus on limited physical properties of buildings (e.g. building design, elevation, heights, setbacks, parking, etc.,) with little or no attention to the residual space, inevitably, created between those blocks. Lands are chiefly privately owned, and considered of a very high value due to the artificial land scarcity phenomenon resulted from the geo-political classification of the West Bank Existing public spaces are not welcoming to the general public. Spaces are misplaced and scattered, they offer pre-defined activities and an inflexible environment. Many parts of the society feel alienated to such public spaces, created by a top-down process with minimal integration of their needs and aspirations.

Public transportation brings more convenience to customer in urban and rural areas. In Malaysia, awareness of using the PJ City bus by passengers in Petaling Jaya is still limited. Many passengers are still unsatisfied with the services provided because the shuttle bus is zero-priced services, so the quality of services are always questioned by access users. Therefore, this current study is to investigate the influences of value, quality and reputation of free shuttle (PJ City) bus services towards customer satisfaction. Understanding what customers expect is very important as it will help to improve the services. Data were collected from users of PJ City bus using a survey questionnaire. The finding further revealed that, value positively influenced the satisfaction of customers. So, it is important for the service provider to enhance its value to the customer.

Abstract Investment in infrastructure is a key factor for improving the quality of life of the population and, consequently, for the economic development of nations. In this context, the universalization of water and sanitation services is of great importance due mainly to their impact on public health. Based on the work of Yehoue et al. (2006) and Sharma (2012), this article studies the determinants of the number of private investment contracts for the basic sanitation sector. In the empirical analysis, with a panel of developing countries during the years 2003-2016, we use the following counting estimators to study the number of contracts in the sector: Negative, Poisson, Negative Binomial, and Zero Inflated negative binomial with corrected Vuong (ZINBCV). The results show that the channels of the macroeconomic environment, foreign investment and the political environment are the main determinants in the formulation of new contracts in the basic sanitation sector.
