Barter has emerged to alleviate capital pressure, maximize the circulation of goods, and facilitate the disposal of excess inventory. This study considers a two-level supply chain consisting of a manufacturer and a capital-constrained retailer with trade credit, in which the retailer exchanges unsold products for needed subsidiary products on a barter platform. The retailer’s optimal order quantity and the manufacturer’s wholesale price are derived, and the influences of barter and other factors on the equilibrium strategy and performance of the supply chain are examined; these results are verified and supplemented by numerical simulation. We find that the retailer can increase profit by bartering when facing highly uncertain demand, that the retailer’s optimal order quantity increases with the supply rate and demand for subsidiary products, and that both manufacturer and retailer benefit from the high supply rate of subsidiary products. However, barter induces the manufacturer to raise the wholesale price to prevent its profit from being harmed. In addition, the manufacturer suffers from the retailer’s initial capital.

The objective of this study is to determine the effect of relevant variables related to strategic sources of financial resources—in our case, suppliers’ trade credit and use of financial institutions—over performance among Spanish construction firms. To test the proposed hypotheses, we employ panel-data techniques on a large dataset that includes information for 3590 Spanish small (1723), medium-sized (1616) and large (251) construction businesses during 2004-2011. The results of the longitudinal analysis reveal that trade credit granted by suppliers constitute a relevant source of liquidity and financial resources that positively impacts economic performance. During the period of economic downturn that affected Spain after 2008, those construction firms that benefited from longer average payment periods from their suppliers reported superior performance levels. Additionally, we find that bank diversification is conducive to performance but only during the crisis period: performance is significantly higher in businesses that work with a greater number of financial institutions.

The massive demand for halal food is the main reason business enterprises engage in halal food production, namely for the purpose of increasing profits. Halal certification has been managed by Malaysian halal certification authorities, namely the Islamic Development Department Malaysia (JAKIM) and the State Islamic Religious Department (JAIN). This study triangulates the viewpoints of Halal Auditors, Halal Executives, and Halal Certification Panel in managing the halal certification process in Malaysia. The main aim of this study is to explore the challenges faced by halal certification authorities and the initiatives that can be taken to improve their roles. A qualitative research method via indepth interviews with Halal Auditors from JAKIM and JAIS, Halal Certification Panel, and Halal Executives from various companies has been used to gather the data for this study. Findings from the interviews highlighted six challenges in the halal certification process which are lack of manpower, Halal Auditor’s lack of skills and knowledge, problems with MYeHALAL system, issues in reviewing halal certification applications, lack of proper guidelines in Malaysia halal certification, and competition from the foreign certification body. The initiatives and suggestions to improve the standard and performance of the Malaysian halal certification authorities are also highlighted. In terms of practical implications, the findings of this study can be used as baseline data for any policy intervention and improvement or advocacy efforts related to halal certification process in Malaysia.

Abstract Current trends in the food industry for the application of membrane techniques are presented. Industrial solutions as well as laboratory research, which can contribute to the improvement of membrane efficiency and performance in this field, are widely discussed. Special attention is given to the main food industries related to dairy, sugar and biotechnology. In addition, the potential of membrane techniques to assist in the treatment of waste sources arising from food production is highlighted.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between debt level and performance among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Design/methodology/approach – Unlike the vast majority of previous research, this study uses three-stage least squares (3SLS) and fixed-effects models to analyse a comprehensive, cross-sectoral sample of 15,897 Swedish SMEs operating in five industry sectors during the 2009-2012 period. Findings – This study confirms that debt ratios, in terms of trade credit, short-term debt and long-term debt, negatively affect firm performance in terms of profitability. As a high debt ratio seems to increase the agency costs and the risk of losing control of the firm, SME owners and managers tend to finance their businesses with equity capital to a fairly high degree. Practical implications – As debt policy significantly influences firm performance, and thereby firm value and survival, SME owners and managers should focus on finding a satisfactory debt level. Originality/value – To the authors’ best knowledge, this study is among the first to use 3SLS and fixed-effects models to analyse the relationship between debt level and firm performance. Moreover, while most previous research has examined listed firms, this study highlights the issue among SMEs, which play a fundamental role in the economy.
