The objective of this study is to determine the effect of relevant variables related to strategic sources of financial resources—in our case, suppliers’ trade credit and use of financial institutions—over performance among Spanish construction firms. To test the proposed hypotheses, we employ panel-data techniques on a large dataset that includes information for 3590 Spanish small (1723), medium-sized (1616) and large (251) construction businesses during 2004-2011. The results of the longitudinal analysis reveal that trade credit granted by suppliers constitute a relevant source of liquidity and financial resources that positively impacts economic performance. During the period of economic downturn that affected Spain after 2008, those construction firms that benefited from longer average payment periods from their suppliers reported superior performance levels. Additionally, we find that bank diversification is conducive to performance but only during the crisis period: performance is significantly higher in businesses that work with a greater number of financial institutions.

As an important participant in the international construction market, Chinese construction firms (CCFs) are confronted with the tasks of keeping themselves competitive. To help CCFs maintain and improve their competitiveness, this research builds a conceptual model to investigate the relationship between competitive strategy, market entry mode and performance within CCFs. Based on data collected from CCFs, this research has confirmed the importance of cost leadership strategy, differentiation strategy and business scope diversification, to achieve their superior performance. Moreover, there are positive relationships among entry mode strategies with CCFs’ international performance.

This paper studies the performance of 118 major Korean construction companies between 1997 and 2003 to verify empirically the existence of a direct relationship between innovations of firms and their performance. This time period was selected because there had been a radical change in the market leadership of the construction industry due to the Asian Financial Crisis of the late 1990s. The AMOS analysis and the research demonstrated that innovation of a firm has an indirect relationship with its performance through mediating variables — firm product and process fits. While innovations of a firm are contingent to the external factors, product fit and process fit have direct impact on firm performance, suggesting that the product fit and the process fit are two significant indicators of the success or failure of a firm.

A manufacturer initially approached the researchers to identify how to use the performance information of their high-performance urethane coating system to increase quality. The research project used the construction industry structure to identify owners who understood the high risk and transactions caused by low bid practices. Intelligent owners understood that value was delivered by expert contractors using high performance products rather than warranties. However, during the economic downturn, high performing contractors reverted to the low bid practices of using warranties to win work rather than performance. To create a high-performance environment, the manufacturer again approached the researchers to mitigate the risk caused by their warranties. The research identified that risk was not mitigated by warranties, but by transparency and performance information. A structure was developed that mitigated risk caused by a change in paradigm that resulted in a "win-win" result in a test case that involved the school district. As the system was installed, the performance of contractors increased, and the sprayed urethane foam contractors became the only roofing contractors at the school district to consistently maintain their installed roofs and mitigate the risk to the client at their own cost without using the manufacturer's warranty.

By employing a non-parametric technique rooted in economic production theory—i.e., Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA)—this study evaluates the efficiency level of construction businesses operating in the Spanish region of Catalonia. The empirical application considers a dataset including information for more than 1000 construction businesses from Catalonia during the period 2005-2016. The empirical results reveal that the efficiency level in the Catalan construction industry drastically fell during the period of economic downturn (2009-2012).  Also, the findings show that efficiency in the industry improves after 2013; however, the speed of recovery is heterogeneous across businesses. A further analysis highlights that business size is a relevant factor explaining efficiency differences among the sampled businesses: efficiency is evidently lower in micro businesses compared to the figures reported for small and medium and large construction firms

Purpose Innovation has been acknowledged as the key for modern industries. However, the construction industry is criticised for being poor in innovation performance compared to other industry sectors. Large construction firms are the main contributor to technological innovation in the construction industry, but the driving process of their technological innovation has not yet been fully investigated in previous studies. The purpose of this paper is to provide quantitative analysis of the technological innovation driving process of large construction firms. Design/methodology/approach An extended crépon, duguet and mairesse (CDM) model has been developed to analyse the key influencing factors for technological innovation in construction firms. The sample data are selected from the world’s largest construction market, China, and include 129 listed construction firms. Findings The results show significant positive correlation between R&D investment and innovation output and also between innovation output and performance. The effect of influencing factors on the R&D investment, innovation output and performance are also revealed by the empirical study. The underlying reasons are discussed and suggestions are given for the construction industry to improve the technological innovation capacity of construction firms. Originality/value This research contributes to the literature of construction innovation and benefits practitioners by providing a quantitative approach to demonstrate the driving process of innovation in construction firms.

The inheritance and innovation of ancient architecture decoration art is an important way for the development of the construction industry. The data process of traditional ancient architecture decoration art is relatively backward, which leads to the obvious distortion of the digitalization of ancient architecture decoration art. In order to improve the digital effect of ancient architecture decoration art, based on neural network, this paper combines the image features to construct a neural network-based ancient architecture decoration art data system model, and graphically expresses the static construction mode and dynamic construction process of the architecture group. Based on this, three-dimensional model reconstruction and scene simulation experiments of architecture groups are realized. In order to verify the performance effect of the system proposed in this paper, it is verified through simulation and performance testing, and data visualization is performed through statistical methods. The result of the study shows that the digitalization effect of the ancient architecture decoration art proposed in this paper is good.


This study investigated the use of e-Procurement in selected construction firms in Oyo state, Nigeria. The data were derived using a well-structured questionnaire survey involving 104 respondents. Descriptive statistical and correlation analyses were used to analyze the data. Findings show that the use of electronic procurement in the selected construction firms for carrying out procurement function is high with majority of the professionals affirming the use of the system, the four categories of e-Procurement used were e-mail, static websites, web.2.0 technologies and portals that have capabilities of supporting the execution of functions limited to intra and inter firm communication and exchange of project information and data. Consequently, between 84 percent and 76 percent of the respondents used these e-Procurement technologies for communication of information, exchange of bill of quantities, project reports, CAD drawings and project specifications. Consequently, factors with the highest positive impacts on the use of these technologies in the firms were the speed of transactions, lower transaction cost and ease of use. The study implies that the selected construction firms in Oyo state Nigeria predominantly use e-mails and websites to support the execution of pre-award phase of construction procurement. Finding also shows that there is positive relationship between e-Procurement (e-Notifying, e-Exchange, and e-Submission of bid) and Project delivery. The study suggests that to accelerate the rate of uptake of e-Procurement and maximize its benefits in the Nigerian construction industry, there is a need to improve the quality and quantity of ICT infrastructure across the country; and to embark on aggressive enlightenment campaigns, training and skill development programs in the use of e-Procurement in the construction industry in this country.

Studies on knowledge creation are limited in general, and there is a particular shortage of research on the topic in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Given the importance of SMEs for the economy and the vital role of knowledge creation in innovation, this situation is unsatisfactory. Accordingly, the purpose of our study is to increase our understanding of how SMEs create new knowledge. Data are obtained through semi-structured interviews with ten managing directors of German SMEs operating in the building and construction industry. The findings demonstrate the influence of external knowledge sources on knowledge creation activities. Even though the managing directors take advantage of different external knowledge sources, they seem to put an emphasis on informed knowledge sources. The study´s findings advance the limited body of knowledge regarding knowledge creation in SMEs.
