A Factor Analysis has been made of the co-variation between the mortality rates from cancer of ten male body sites and of eight female body sites, in thirty large towns in England and Wales from 1921 to 1930. The method of analysis adopted is Hotelling's method of Principal Components.Four male and four female Factors are obtained, which together account for approximately three-quarters of the total variance.A Factor is found to be associated with cancer of the larynx, oesophagus, stomach and tongue in men and with cancer of the stomach and negatively with cancer of the breast and ovaries in women. In both sexes, the Factors are associated with an index of adverse social conditions.Another Factor is found to be associated with cancer of the rectum and bladder in men and this Factor is associated with good social conditions.A special Factor associated with cancer of the colon is unrelated to the mortality from cancer of other sites, save that in women it is negatively associated with cancer of the rectum.A Factor for cancer of the lung in men is unrelated to cancer of the larynx, and is inversely related to cancer of the tongue. We are most grateful to Dr Percy Stocks, late of the General Register Office, and to Dr W. P. D. Logan, Chief Medical Statistician of the General Register Office, for their help in providing us with the relevant basic material; and to Miss E. M. Hines, Miss A. H. Huntley and Miss M. Rogers for assistance in the calculations.

AbstractThe separable cyclic extension of rings is generalized to a separable noncyclic extension of rings: a crossed product with a factor set over a ring (not necessarily commutative). A representation of separable idempotents for a separable crossed product is obtained, and simplifications for some special factor sets are also given.

EPDM film is an innovative insulation material used in the Solid Rocket Motor. İt is a kind of unidirectional single layer fiber-reinforced composite plate. To analyze its mechanical behavior uniaxial tests with different loading directions and rates were performed. The test results indicated that the EPDM film is anisotropic and its mechanical properties are obviously rate-dependent. To create a rate-dependent anisotropic strength criterion, two methods were adopted to extend the Tsai-Hill strength criterion; the first was to substitute all the strength components in the Tsai-Hill criterion with the fitted rate-dependent ones, the second was to introduce a special factor named the rate-dependency factor R(ε) into the criterion. The second method is simpler in form and more suitable for an engineering application. The two rate-dependent criteria were examined by comparing the predicted results with the experimental ones, and the results showed good agreement which verified that the strength criteria were able to reveal the anisotropic rate-dependent properties of the EPDM film.

A few general lines in the ordinary Euclidean plane are said to be line generators of a plane linear set. To be able to say that every line of the set belongs to one-parametrical line set we have to find their envelope. We thus create a pencil of lines. In this article it will be shown that there are a finite number of pencils in one linear set. To find a pencil of lines the linear parametrical approximation is applied. Almost all of problems concerning the parametrical approximation of figure sets are well known and deeply developed for any point sets. The problem of approximation for non-point sets is an actual one. The aim of this paper is to give a path to parametrical approximation of linear sets defined in plane. The sets are discrete and consist of finite number of lines without any order. Each line of the set is given as y = ax + b. Parametrical approximation means a transformation the discrete set of lines into completely continuous family of lines. There are some problems. 1. The problem of order. It is necessary to represent the chaotic set of lines as well-ordered one. The problem is solved by means of directed circuits. Any of chaotic sets has a finite number of directed circuits. To create an order means to find all directed circuits in the given set. 2. The problem of choice. In order to find the best approximation, for example, the simplest one it is necessary to choose the simplest circuit. Some criteria of the choice are discussed in the paper. 3. Interpolation the set of line factors. A direct approach would simply construct an interpolation for all line factors. But this can lead to undesirable oscillations of the line family. To eliminate the oscillations the special factor interpolation are suggested. There are linear sets having one or several multiple points, one or several multiple lines and various combinations of multiple points and lines. Some theorems applied to these cases are formulated in the paper.

The article examines the role and place of faith in the concept of Vladimir Solovyov who is considered to be the creator of the first Russian philosophical system. The purpose of the article is to determine the epistemological and methodological significance of faith in Solovyov’s understanding as a special factor of cognition. In order to study this problem, a synthetic method of reconstruction of the thought of Solovyov as well as a method of philosophical analysis was used. First, Solovyov’s project of integral knowledge or free theosophy is presented, i. e. synthesis of philosophy, theology, and science. The suppositions of this concept are revealed and its polemical context is indicated, namely, Solovyov’s attempt to overcome the abstract or one-sided principles: reason, empirical experience, and faith in order to create an integral system that should unite all types of knowledge. In addition, philosophy as such corresponds to reason, science to experience, and theology to faith. The second part of the article is devoted to the epistemological aspects of faith in the concept of integral knowledge. It lies in the fact that each act of cognition begins with the assertion of the objective existence of its object, which Solovyov describes as faith in a broad sense of the word. Thus, faith has a universal significance as a necessary condition for the cognitive process. The third part of the article discusses the methodological aspect of faith as a key link in the system of integral knowledge. As a result, faith has a dominant role not only in theology, but in all spheres of knowledge, including philosophy and science. Thus, it is possible to conclude that there is no conflict between faith and reason; on the contrary, they complement each other. Solovyov’s position is still relevant nowadays.

AbstractThis paper critiques a Panel ruling that was permissive in allowing the EU to exclude China from the renegotiations of several tariff lines of poultry meat and the related allocation of new tariff-rate quotas (TRQs). The EU's basis for exclusion was that China lacked a principal or substantial supplying interest in the modified tariff lines. The Panel's ruling supported China for only two tariff lines in which China eventually served 50% of the EU market after certain SPS measures expired, on the narrow basis that this import increase should have been considered a special factor in the TRQ allocation. The paper argues that the Panel ruled too narrowly by disregarding China's broader claims for a principal or substantial supplying interest. An interpretation consistent with the object and purpose of the GATT supports utilizing a broader set of evidence in China's claim as a principal or substantial supplier for renegotiations of tariff schedules. Allowing nations to use TRQs to prevent emerging markets from achieving a substantial supplying interest is a significant obstacle to the WTO's purpose. The Panel's ruling will be important for future TRQ renegotiations, such as those that would be necessary under Brexit.
