A recent strong thesis questioned actors in the field (teachers, college principals, teaching assistants, students, senior education advisors) on the question of aid as a means of democratization of the school, success of more destitute. Four positions emerged with institutional, pedagogical and family recommendations. They all express practices whose aims are the fight against failure, school dropout and inequalities. The theoretical framework is part of the work of Bautier and Rochex, (1997), and Broccholichi (1995), Meirieu (2001). The methodology consists of thirty-nine semi-structured interviews and the treatment is a thematic analysis of content. The originality of the study is the reflection at better conditions for useful aids outside the classroom.Thus, through a deductive approach, we have drawn some conditions for the help to be useful to students outside the classroom: to improve the diagnosis of school difficulty; target aid; put coherence in the actions; promote student volunteering with complementary modules based on a skills framework; reform the tasks. The success of aids also depends on changes to be made outside the classroom; reorganize the personalized help; focus on fundamental learning and diversify teaching methods: set up complementary modules with a reference system of skills; avoid the multiplication of aids; change the structure of the aid; integrate help into the teaching profession; train the actors of the helpers; change school rhythms, really involve families; evaluate the aid Strengthen the partnership between the aid and external actors.

Abstract Background Initiatives for beekeeping intensification across the tropics can foster production and income, but the changes triggered by the introduction of modern beehives might permeate traditional knowledge and practices in multiple ways, and as such should be investigated and understood. We conducted an ethnobotanical study in the Eastern part of the Mau Forest among Ogiek beekeepers who customarily practice forest beekeeping and who are involved in a project aimed at the modernization of their beekeeping activities. We aimed to document the beekeeping-associated ethnobotanical knowledge, exploring the relationships and complementarity between modern and traditional knowledge and practices. Methods Field research was carried out through semi-structured interviews with 30 Ogiek beekeepers and 10 additional stakeholders. We collected ethnobotanical data about plants used for beekeeping purposes, and ethnographic information on traditional and modern beekeeping systems. Results We report 66 plant species, distributed across 36 botanical families representing 58 genera, important as melliferous, for the construction and placing of hives, attracting bees, and harvesting and storing honey. Dombeya torrida (J.F.Gmel.) Bamps, Juniperus procera Hochst. ex Endl., and Podocarpus latifolius (Thunb.) R.Br. ex Mirb. are the species with the most mentions and the highest number of uses. Our study reveals that the Ogiek possess a detailed knowledge of the forest’s flora, its importance and uses and that this knowledge underpins beekeeping practices. Under the influence of external actors, the Ogiek have progressively adopted modern versus traditional log hives and moved beekeeping out of the forest into open areas of pastures and crop fields. Beekeepers are also experimenting with combinations of practices borrowed from modern and traditional beekeeping systems, particularly in the field of hive construction and in the criteria to set up apiaries. Conclusions The study indicates a complementarity and an incipient hybridization of traditional and modern beekeeping, in a way that suggests that modern beehives are instrumental in expanding the reach of beekeeping into deforested and cultivated areas. The study also points to the existence of a rift in the effects of beekeeping intensification on the livelihoods of the Ogiek and on their relationship with the forest. We argue that this intensification might be improving the former but weakening the latter, carrying the associated risk of erosion of traditional forest-based ethnobotanical knowledge.

Background:All women deserve a “dwelling space” during their postnatal period after the birth of their infant. This “space” provides her an opportunity to be cared for, to be replenished, to rest and to reflect on herself being a new mother before returning home. We explored a volunteer community residential service set up to help new mothers to document their experiences and determine if the outcomes matched their expectations. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were offered to all women who had utilised this service since its inception. The questionnaire explored their motivations to seek such as service and to learn of their experiences. The interviews were audio recorded, transcribed and a thematic analysis employed. Results: Over the last 8 years, 12 women, 4 twice, availed themselves of this service, two being first-time mothers. Reasons given by mothers for utilising this service included recovery from the trauma of childbirth both past and present, physical and emotional, and delaying assuming responsibilities at home. All the women had welcomed the “dwelling space”, being mothered, feeling replenished and having time to meaningfully relate to their newborn infant.The ambience of the accommodation and the care they received were above their expectations. All would recommend other new mothers to avail themselves of this service

Jelen tanulmány a BME mérnökképzésein tanító legjobb oktatók tanítással kapcsolatos nézeteit és tanítási módszereit mutatja be félig strukturált interjúk eredményei alapján. A vizsgálatban 26 oktató vett részt az egyetem nyolc karáról, kiválasztásuk a hallgatók értékelésein alapult. Az oktatókat pályaválasztásuk történetéről, oktatási céljaikról, oktatási módszereikről kérdeztük. Eredményeink szerint az oktatók többsége nem készült a tanári pályára és kevesen rendelkeznek tanári képesítéssel. A legjobb oktatók tanítással kapcsolatos koncepciói a tanulóközpontú/tanulásorientált kategóriával jellemezhetők (hallgatók motiválása, tananyag megértése, életszemlélet formálása, a tanulás élvezete). A tanárközpontú/tartalomorientált nézet is feltárható volt, az ismeretátadás fontosságának hangsúlyozása révén. A legjobb oktatókra jellemző a tanítás szeretete, a minőség képviselete a tanítás során, nyitottság az újra. A hallgatókkal való kapcsolatuk pedig a partnerséggel írható le. Az órákon kívül is kapcsolatban vannak a hallgatókkal (szakmai programok, közös kutató munka révén). Oktatási gyakorlatukban a hagyományos (táblára, krétával történő) oktatás mellett, az új technológiai lehetőségek alkalmazása is megjelenik. Mindazonáltal kevés oktató használja kizárólag a projektort az oktatás során. Fontosak az oktatók számára a hallgatóktól származó visszajelzések, jellemző rájuk az önreflexió. ***This study presents the conception of teaching and the teaching methods of the best university lecturers in the engineering programmes of BME, based on the results of semi structured interviews. 26 lecturers participated in the interviews from the eight faculties of the university, selected on the judgements of the students. Lecturers were interviewed about the history of their career choice, teaching goals and their teaching methods. According to the results most of the lecturers have not prepared for teaching profession and only a few of them have had degree in teaching. The best lecturers’ conception of teaching could be described by the student-centred /learning orientation category (motivating students, understanding of the curriculum, conceptual change, enjoy of learning). The conception of teacher-centred/ content-oriented was also revealed by emphasizing the importance of knowledge transmitting. The best lecturers are characterized by the love of teaching, quality teaching, openness to new information and their relationship with the students are described as a partnership. They also have connections with the students outside the classroom (across professional programmes, joint research work). In their teaching practices besides the traditional teaching (on the blackboard with chalk) the use of new technologies is also presented. Nevertheless, few lecturers use solely beamer during the teaching process. The feedbacks of the students are important for the university lecturers, and they are characterized by self-reflection.

Effective communication skills are important in the health care setting in order to develop rapport and trust with patients, provide reassurance, assess patients effectively and provide education in a way that patients easily understand (Candlin and Candlin, 2003). However with many nurses from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds being recruited to fill the workforce shortfall in Australia, communication across cultures with the potential for miscommunication and ensuing risks to patient safety has gained increasing focus in recent years (Shakya and Horsefall, 2000; Chiang and Crickmore, 2009). This paper reports on the first phase of a study that examines intercultural nurse patient communication from the perspective of four Registered Nurses from CALD backgrounds working in Australia. Five interrelating themes that were derived from thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews are discussed. The central theme of ‘adjustment’ was identified as fundamental to the experiences of the RNs and this theme interrelated with each of the other themes that emerged: professional experiences with communication, ways of showing respect, displaying empathy, and vulnerability.

Regional research ethics committee (REC) members have voiced a need for the linguistic improvement of informed consent documents to ensure duly informed consent and to ease committee deliberation. We have little knowledge of what elements of language use hamper comprehension, or of the extent of medical researchers’ appreciation of this problem and their willingness to accept intervention. This qualitative, explorative study proposes an intervention design and tests its feasibility and acceptability. Semi-structured interviews with potential REC applicants informed a linguistic intervention benchmarked against existing guidelines, mandated locally and nationally, and then evaluated quantitatively in a semi-controlled set-up and qualitatively via questionnaires. Potential applicants professed the psychological acceptability of linguistic intervention. The intervention comprised a downloadable Microsoft Word template outlining information structure, a detailed guideline offering advice for each move and self-selected linguistic screening. It was used by 14 applicants and had a measurable effect on REC deliberation time and approval rates. The intervention instruments overall made it easier for applicants to produce informed consent documents meeting prescribed ethical standards concerning lay-friendliness. In conclusion, it was found that linguistic intervention is relevant, feasible and psychologically acceptable to REC applicants; it aids their text production process and seems to enhance the lay-friendliness of these texts.

This descriptive qualitative study explored Latinx mothers’ acceptance of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for their adolescent children. Data were collected through individual, semi-structured interviews and analyzed using a hybrid method of thematic analysis that incorporated deductive and inductive approaches. Twenty-two ( n = 22), mostly foreign-born, Latinx mothers of male and female adolescents participated in the study. Three main themes and nine subthemes emerged from the analyses. Findings identified the need for increased efforts to raise awareness and knowledge among Latinx mothers of the direct benefits of the HPV vaccine for sons, including stressing prevention of HPV-associated cancers in males. Findings also underscore the need for improved health care providers’ communication and recommendation of the HPV vaccine for Latinx adolescent males. Future research should intervene upon the study’s findings to address barriers that remain and affect Latinx mothers’ acceptance and uptake of the HPV vaccine for their children, in particular their sons.

In response to students’ food insecurity, a number of colleges and universities have taken action and established campus food pantries as part of their intervention plans. However, many of these pantries ceased operation due to COVID-19 campus shutdowns. The purpose of this study is to illustrate the short-term impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on postsecondary students, who use a university-provided food pantry. Drawing from semi-structured interviews with 12 participants, the thematic analysis explored the initial coping strategies these students used to endure the pandemic. Findings revealed that many students experienced the immediate effects of the pandemic in the form of income loss, self-isolation, anxiety, and appetite change. Although the pandemic interrupted these students’ journeys to continue their studies and become independent in various ways, the affected students implemented various coping strategies, including seeking help from family or friends, using available resources, cooking at home, and even trying to save money. However, considering that the targeted population in this study was already at risk because of their basic needs insecurity, these postsecondary students require extra attention from their higher education institutions in the case of emergencies, such as a global pandemic. In addition to its timely and relevant findings, this study provides important avenues for future research and intervention efforts.

Background: Newly qualified nurses are known to experience a range of feelings and fears in the first transitional 12 months post-qualifying, with absence and turnover among potential outcomes. Aim: To evaluate the personal professional mentor role and scheme, a new pastoral support initiative, from the perspective of participating newly qualified nurses. Methods: Newly qualified paediatric nurses (n=10), who had been assigned a personal professional mentor (an experienced nurse who worked elsewhere in their employing NHS Trust), completed a semi-structured interview. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. Findings: The personal professional mentor counteracted some aspects of transition isolation for the newly qualified nurses. They were an independent, accessible, experienced confidant and a welcome new supportive role. Conclusion: Pairing experienced nurses with newly qualified nurses provided a new type of workplace support during transition. Inexpensive to set up and run, it is an easy addition to any portfolio of support strategies.

People receiving haemodialysis have considerable and complex dietary and healthcare needs, including co-morbidities. A recent New Zealand study has shown that few patients on haemodialysis are able to meet nutritional requirements for haemodialysis. This study aims to describe the perspectives and experiences of dietary management among patients on haemodialysis in New Zealand. This exploratory qualitative study used in-depth semi-structured interviews. Purposive sampling was used to recruit participants from different ethnic groups. Forty interviews were conducted, audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. An inductive approach was taken using thematic analysis. Forty participants were interviewed. Participants spoke of major disruption to their lives as a result of their chronic kidney disease and being on haemodialysis, including loss of employment, financial challenges, loss of independence, social isolation and increased reliance on extended family. Most had received adequate dietary information, although some felt that more culturally appropriate support would have enabled a healthier diet. These findings show that further support to make the recommended dietary changes while on haemodialysis should focus on socio-cultural factors, in addition to the information already provided.
