Silicon carbide black grinding powders 54CF180-F36, mass-produced at Volzhsky Abrasive Plant are studied. Powders are screened into fractions according to GOST R 52381. Measurement of a grain width of each fraction was carried out by means of a photometric method using specially developed soft-ware. For the vast majority of fractions the grain width follows the normal distribution law. The deviation of the grain width from the normal law can be observed at the fractions settled on the second sieve and the pallet. With decreasing the nominal mesh size of a pass sieve in each grit size the arithmetic mean of grain width of the main fraction decreases, dispersion reduces from the fraction settling on the second sieve to the fourth and increases at the fraction settling on the pallet. In case of the identical mesh size of a pass sieve the mean and dispersion of grain width fraction increase with grinding powder grit increase. For each grit size the functional dependences of the mean and dispersion of grain width fraction on a mesh size of a pass sieve are established.

The SCS-6 SiC fiber is a 142 μm diameter fiber consisting of four distinct regions of βSiC. These SiC regions vary in excess carbon content ranging from 10 a/o down to 5 a/o in the SiC1 through SiC3 region. The SiC4 region is stoichiometric. The SiC sub-grains in all regions grow radially outward from the carbon core of the fiber during the chemical vapor deposition processing of these fibers. In general, the sub-grain width changes from 50nm to 250nm while maintaining an aspect ratio of ~10:1 from the SiC1 through the SiC4 regions. In addition, the SiC shows a <110> texture, i.e., the {111} planes lie ±15° along the fiber axes. Previous has shown that the SCS-6 fiber (as well as the SCS-9 and the developmental SCS-50 μm fiber) undergoes primary creep (i.e., the creep rate constantly decreases as a function of time) throughout the lifetime of the creep test.

Composition of Trichiuridae and Gempylidae larvae (Teleostei) and their association with water masses in the Southwest Atlantic OceanIn this paper the relationship between temporal changes in the occurrence of water masses and Trichiuridae and Gempylidae larvae composition and distribution in the Southwest Atlantic ocean were analysed between 25° and 40° S. Ichthyoplankton was collected during the three expeditions of the Subtropical Convergence Project: Winter and Spring 1977, Autumn 1978 and Summer 1981, realized in the Southwest Atlantic waters. Oblique tows were conducted using a Hensen net with 250 μm mesh size. Steep salinity and temperature gradient were found, where the river outflows from La Plata river (Argentina) and Patos Lagoon (Brazil) met the Tropical Water over the continental shelf between 32 and 36° S. We examined 524 Hensen-net samples that contained about 283 larvae from five species of Trichiuridae and Gempylidae. The most abundant and frequent specie were

Macrobenthic data from estuaries along the Pernambuco coast in north-eastern Brazil were analysed to evaluate the effect of sieve mesh size (1.0 mm × 0.5 mm) and sampling depth (0–10 cm × 0–20 cm) on the description of infaunal communities, in an attempt to discuss standardized sampling procedures for different ecological studies objectives in these ecosystems. In general, the difference in sieve retention was less evident for biomass but was important for abundance: the 1.0 mm sieve retained only 27% of total individuals but 77% of total biomass. Regarding sampling depth, the 0–10 cm layer contained most individuals (94%) but contributed just 64% of the overall biomass. Although no strong differences in community structure were observed at most sites with the use of different sieves, the correlations among community dissimilarity using different meshes with environmental parameters (organic matter, total-N and microphytobenthos) indicated that the use of the 0.5 mm sieve will allow a better evaluation of the status of these estuaries. The results also highlight the importance of taking the vertical distribution of tropical macrofauna into account for quantitative estimates: for taxa composition and abundance the top layer is clearly essential, whereas for biomass the deeper layers should also be considered.

AbstractWe examined if the results of statistical analyses of the relationship between copepod communities and water masses would be affected by the mesh size of the plankton net, by comparing abundance and species composition of copepods in plankton samples collected by plankton nets of different mesh sizes. Our samples were collected during the summer of 2006 in the East China Sea (ECS) by plankton nets with mesh sizes of 100 and 330 μm. The abundance of copepods collected by the 100 μm-mesh plankton net was about two orders of magnitude higher than that collected by the 330 μm-mesh plankton net. The difference in abundance was mainly due to the loss of small-sized copepods in the samples collected by the plankton net with the larger mesh. Species richness was higher in samples collected by the 100 μm-mesh net and Piélou's evenness was generally higher in samples collected by the 330 μm-mesh net. Although species composition of copepods varied in samples collected by plankton nets with different mesh sizes, the statistical analysis of the relationship between the copepod community and the water masses in these samples appeared not to be affected.

The density, taxonomic composition, and spatial and temporal distribution of the estuarine ichthyoplankton of Bahía Málaga (Pacific coast of Colombia) are described, as well as the relationship between biological parameters and some physicochemical variables. Samples were collected at 12 stations along the principal navigation canal; these samples were taken in four areas following the design of Barletta-Bergan. Surface sweeps were carried out with a conical-cylindrical net (mesh size 500 µm, mouth diameter 0.6 m, length 3.5 m). Salinity and temperature were measured before each sweep. A total of 69019 larvae/1000 m³, representing 23 families, 36 genera and 40 species were collected during monthly sampling from September, 2009 to February, 2010. Carangidae (39.0%) was the most abundant family, followed by Sciaenidae (27.1%) and Engraulidae (20.1%). The most frequent families were Sciaenidae (26.6%), followed by Carangidae (22.8%) and Engraulidae (14.7%) which are important families in larval fish assemblages in tropical estuaries. Eighty percent of total density was provided by six species, of which Seriola morphotype 1 (Carangidae) and Cetengraulis mysticetus (Engraulidae) were the most abundant and dominant. No correlation was found between density and salinity (Spearman, R = 0.23) or temperature (Spearman, R = 0.51). Analysis of spatial and temporal variations of larval density shows significant differences among the months sampled (Anova, p = 0.0029; p < 0.05), but not among areas (Anova, p = 0.078), suggesting that Bahía Málaga offers adequate conditions for the presence of fish larvae.
