B73 is a variety of maize (Zea mays ssp. mays) widely used in genetic, genomic, and phenotypic research around the world. B73 was also served as the reference genotype for the original maize genome sequencing project. The advent of large-scale RNA-sequencing as a method of measuring gene expression presents a unique opportunity to assess the level of relatedness among individuals identified as variety B73. The level of haplotype conservation and divergence across the genome were assessed using 27 RNA-seq data sets from 20 independent research groups in three countries. Several clearly distinct clades were identified among putatively B73 samples. A number of these blocks were defined by the presence of clearly defined genomic blocks containing a haplotype which did not match the published B73 reference genome. In a number of cases the relationship among B73 samples generated by different research groups recapitulated mentor/mentee relationships within the maize genetics community. A number of regions with distinct, dissimilar, haplotypes were identified in our study. However, when considering the age of the B73 accession -- greater than 40 years -- and the challenges of maintaining isogenic lines of a naturally outcrossing species, a strikingly high overall level of conservation was exhibited among B73 samples from around the globe.

The features of the connotation phenomenon in the aspect of the theory of lacunarity and the concept of emotional valency are considered. The result of the analysis of synchronized databases of reference information systems “Scientific electronic library of Theses and Dissertations”, “Electronic library of dissertations”, “Man and science” and “Library of dissertations” for the study of the connotation phenomenon is presented. A dissertation catalog has been compiled, including 184 works in which the subject, object or separate issue under consideration is connotation, a graphical explication of the results of the content analysis of these dissertations is presented, and the analytical and prognostic potential of the developed linear graphs is described. Extensional and intensional directions of the study of connotation, as well as their fluctuations, are shown. The source of illustrative material was the parallel sub-corpus (English) of the National Corps of the Russian Language. The question of the relationship of the emotional coloring of the word and emotional connotation is considered. It is stated that the study of connotation as a multidimensional phenomenon requires an integrative approach and the convergence of humanitarian and natural sciences. It is concluded that the use of the theory of lacunarity with respect to the study of the connotation of linguistic units seems promising, allowing to systematize the concept of the phenomenon of connotation in the framework of modern linguistics.

The link between inequality and negative social outcomes has been the subject of much debate recently, brought into focus by the publication of The Spirit Level. This article uses multilevel modelling to explore the relationship between inequality and five crime types at sub-national level across England. Controlling for other factors, inequality is positively associated with higher levels of all five crime types and findings are robust to alternative inequality specifications. Findings support the sociological – but not economic – theories and highlight the importance of policies to tackle broader social and economic inequalities.

This study makes a systematic review of scientific publications of research, on the theme Technology Park in Brazil. It seeks to identify and analyze the scope of Science and Technology Parks at the national level, in order to understand the trends and interrelations between university education. The mapping was the basis for knowing and discussing the results of the scientific production of different areas, considering the different times and places, in what form and under what conditions they were produced. For its construction, searches were carried out on the subject in the Capes, Bdtd, Anped and Ibict databases from 2006 to 2017, looking for similarity with a set of descriptors. The survey was performed after selection in the directories that indicate PCT as the subject of study. We retrieved 574 scientific research productions, being selected for reading the abstract 132 works, we observed that only 18 productions are preponderant in relation to the area of education. For the analysis, the following variables were considered: objective, methodology and conclusions pointed out, with the interest concentrated in university formation, scientific initiation, social impact, case study. To analyze the data, the following categories emerged: PCT and the relationship between university, business and government; PCT and Public policies; PCT and technological and economic development; PCT and management model and finally, PCT and the relationship with initiation. The analysis shows that researchers need to follow a planning and scientific strategy that allows them to present different levels of relationships between park and technology, innovation, economics, research, government, business, development and university. The result of the analysis of the categories on methodologies, indicated indications that are the methods and the technical instruments that order the systematized thought, organizing in a organized way the way of proceeding throughout the investigation to reach the proposed objective. This article aims to conduct an initial survey and map the academic production on the theme: National program of professional and basic education integration in the young and adult education mode (Programa Nacional de Integração da Educação Profissional com a Educação Básica na Modalidade de Educação de Jovens e Adultos - PROEJA) from dissertations, theses and articles published from 2006 to 2013. In order to undertake this research, we observed some theoretical and methodological procedures, literature review and documents which delimit this conceptual and historic field with the studies of Moura (2007), Moll (2010) Di Pierro (2010), Romanowski and Ens (2006), and Ferreira (2002). It is a bibliographical study which describes the state of the art about PROEJA in the country, having the word “PROEJA” as the research descriptor and the following analysis indicators: year of publication, the place where the research was performed (with empirical research), institution, type of production, categories of knowledge and keywords. The following sources were chosen as databases: Platform Scielo Brazil, the Public Domain Portal of Theses and Dissertations and the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD) of the Brazilian Institute of Information Science and Technology (IBCT). It can be concluded that scientific production in the mentioned area is still shy considering the theoretical and methodological challenges posed by the implementation of PROEJA, and there is still remarkably little research related to aspects such as didactic teaching materials, funding and the relationship with rural education.

Purpose It is important to infer and diagnose whether a negotiator is trustworthy. In international negotiations, people may assume that high-trust nations are more likely to produce more trustworthy negotiators. Does this assumption hold universally? This study aims to address this research question by investigating the relationship between national-level societal trust and individual-level trust in negotiations. Design/methodology/approach This study uses a cross-sectional research design and a sample of 910 senior managers from 58 nations or regions. The hypotheses are tested by hierarchical linear modeling. Findings This study draws on the dynamic constructivist theory of culture to propose moderated hypotheses. Results show that societal trust predicts individuals’ social perceptions of attitudinal trust in negotiations, only when cultural face norms are weak rather than strong; societal trust predicts individuals’ social perceptions of behavioral trust in negotiations (i.e. high information sharing and low competitive behavior), only when negotiators process information analytically rather than holistically. Originality/value This study is the first to examine the relationship between national-level societal trust (i.e. generalized trust) and individual-level trust in negotiations (i.e. particularistic trust). It uses a large-scale, multinational sample to show that relying on societal trust to infer trust in negotiations is valid only in Western societies.

ABSTRACT: The lack of interpretive convergence around an analytical category or concept generates a field of disputes around the understanding of a certain phenomenon. This is also the case with “pluriactivity”, on which there remain interpretive divergences derived from its conception. This research aims to identify the interpretive tendencies that are gaining traction in Brazil. For that, the research used as a database the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD - “Biblioteca Digital Brasileira de Teses e Dissertações”), since this type of database compiles and updates the state of the art on the subject. The research universe consisted of 115 dissertations and theses were systematized and analyzed using IRAMUTEQ software. Results showed that the development of theses and dissertations studying the theme of pluriactivity has remained as a current research topic. A higher incidence was noted more in the Southern and Southeastern universities of the country, where the dynamics between the three sectors of the economy favor the possibility of combining agricultural and non-agricultural activities. The conclusions of the research pointed to the coexistence of two different conceptions regarding pluriactivity: one that characterizes it as a strategy of reproduction and survival; and another that associates it with the diversification of the labor market at the regional level, which would allow the farmers’ family members to diversify the family income and increase the possibilities of investment in the activities developed in the rural property.

The twin processes of industrialisation and urbanisation lie at the heart of the evolution of modern British society, in North-East England as in other areas of large scale industrial development. Despite the cardinal importance of the interaction between these two processes the relationship is only very imperfectly understood; this weakness is in part due to the limited amount of investigation which has taken place, in part to serious deficiencies in the surviving evidence, and in part to the inherent complexity of the subject. As yet, for example, we have no adequate studies of the major industries of the region, including coal-mining and shipbuilding, while our knowledge of the development of urban communities is very far from complete. In addition much of the archaeological evidence for the older parts of the industrial communities has disappeared, or is disappearing, often without adequate study or record. In these circumstances an essay on the relationship between industrialisation and urbanisation in North-East England must be tentative and limited, and should be seen as an attempt to bring together some of the available material rather than one which offers an explanatory model.

Much has been written on the relationship of China and Africa in the past decade. However, the subject of Chinese migrant entrepreneurs in Africa and their articulation with African counterparts was little explored up to the early 2010s. Apparently, this research gap has been closed, as shown by four publications in recent years: three edited volumes and one monograph, focusing on this subject. In view of early prejudices on the passive or even disapproving reception of Chinese migrants by Africans, the state of the art underlines the importance and scope of African agency vis à vis Chinese migrant entrepreneurs in Africa. This has been underlined unison in the four books under review.
