Violence has been a part of daily life in both traditional and digital media. Consequently, neither the existence of violence in the media nor the debates on this subject are new. On the other hand, the presentation of violence in fictional content should be viewed from a different point of view, especially in the context of aesthetization. Within this context, in this chapter, the serial of Penny Dreadful is analyzed. As analyzing method, Tahsin Yücel's model of the “space/time coordinates of narrative” is used. And the subject of “aestheticization of violence” is analyzed through a serial with the elements of person, space, and time. Thus, the role of not only physical beauty but also different components in the aestheticization of violence is examined.

The editorial panel chose the topic of geometry for a focus issue because we wanted to promote an increase in the attention given to geometry and measurement for all students in all grades. We identify with the observation by Marjorie Senechal in her essay “Shape,” in which she notes that “the role of geometry is a perennial issue in mathematics education at all levels from elementary school to graduate school.” As she discusses some of these issues, she observes that “the teaching of geometry is defended on the grounds that it serves external purposes, rather than on the importance of the subject in its own right” (Senechal 1990).

To do so, it departs from the horizon of the world of life, so that the text is an attempt at intentionality of consciousness. The pedagogical and historical ethos of Brazilian society is the foundation of this essay, in which the subject is categorized as a woman and, from Adorno’s critical theory, presents an alert to the role of education. In addition, the text is a reflection on the epistemological and discursive bases of the treatment of the question of gender and its reflexes for a humanizing education of the Other. Keywords: Gender. The aim of this paper is to provide a structured collection of case studies organized around the core discussion of how to address the subject of digital media in schools of design in general and architecture in particular. By means of these case studies it will be possible to understand the trajectory that we have followed in the Department of Architecture at Texas A&M University, having as main goal the incorporation of digital media instruction in design curricula and to assess whether our instructional methods and strategies are in tune with our present understanding of the role of digital media in design. The case studies have been organized following three main contextual themes, namely: shaping our understanding of the role of digital media in design, incorporating digital media in the design studio, and adapting to the availability of new technology. The paper includes the identification of critical issues, among them: polarization between traditional and digital media, solutions for continuous learning and update, and pervasive accessibility of digital means. The paper states conclusions and identifies the opportunities and challenges that we foresee in the near future based on the implementation of multidisciplinary integration and the development of multimodal and media-rich design environments.

Many reasons have been given for the inclusion of more geometry in the lower grades. Certainly, geometry is an important subject in its own right, and as certainly, it is un realistic to postpone the study of geometry until it can be approached in a systematic and rigorous way. (Precision and rigor can best be appreciated when we understand what we are being precise and rigorous about.) lt is also true that geometry is encountered in everyday life, and that children do find the subject interesting. What has not often been pointed out is that geometry can extend and enrich the study of arithmetic.

The role of top-down processing on the horizontal-vertical line length illusion was examined by means of an ambiguous room with dual visual verticals. In one of the test conditions, the subjects were cued to one of the two verticals and were instructed to cognitively reassign the apparent vertical to the cued orientation. When they have mentally adjusted their perception, two lines in a plus sign configuration appeared and the subjects had to evaluate which line was longer. The results showed that the line length appeared longer when it was aligned with the direction of the vertical currently perceived by the subject. This study provides a demonstration that top-down processing influences lower level visual processing mechanisms. In another test condition, the subjects had all perceptual cues available and the influence was even stronger.
