This paper reviews the nature of innovation, and seeks to assess the current status of Thailand as an innovative economy, to identify what innovation strategies are available and are being implemented, and to examine in some detail the automotive sector as a case in point. Thailand is gaining recognition as the Detroit of Southeast Asia. Both Japanese and American automobile manufacturers are investing heavily in Thailand, bringing with them the opportunity for local companies to become part of the supply chain. The Thai government has the opportunity to assist these Thai companies to become innovative, with some expectation of innovation-related spin-off effects for other manufacturing sectors. This paper describes some of the Thai government programs in support of innovation, and assesses the governments communication strategy in making Thai companies aware of its programs and getting Thai companies to buy into its programs.

The automotive sector is one of the fastest growing sectors of economy. The increasing amount of cars both in Polish and world roads results in the immeasurable benefits associated with the goods and human transport. On the other hand, this phenomenon caused the contamination of the environment. During the fuel combustion in petrol or diesel engines, the harmful gases, for example CO2, NOx and SOx are emitted. Apart from the negative impact on the environment, the emission of the aforementioned gases results in the deterioration of human conditions, as well as, the development of civilization diseases. In order to minimalize the harmful influence of an automotive industry on the environment, new technologies which can reduce the consumption of fuel or limit the fumes emission are developed. The first part of paper presents new solutions in an automotive sector which influence on the decline of the negative impact of automobiles on the environment. Additionally, proposed solutions affect the development of a car industry, taking into consideration environmental aspects.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to analyze the relationships between the determinants of value appropriation and the innovation strategies in smallholder farming. A survey was conducted with 199 smallholders in the municipality of Guarapuava, in the state of Paraná (PR), Brazil. This quantitative study analyzes data through descriptive statistics and correlation. Results showed that, in general, farmers do not access the determinants of value appropriation through innovation. However, access to government programs aimed commercialization and cooperativism demonstrating a relationship with the determinants of appropriation of value created by innovation. This study contributed to the understanding of mechanisms that allow farmers to obtain better results through innovation strategies.

This article aims to propose a new model of technological innovations, as well as using it in a case study in the automotive industry. After an analysis of the main scientific databases, it was verified that the present work is unprecedented in presenting a unified model of identification and management of technological innovations. In methodological terms, the bibliometric and systemic analyzes were performed in order to identify the main technological innovations inherent in the automotive industry. In terms of research results, a cohesive innovation model was obtained, which, once based on the concepts of sensitive innovation and latent innovation, allows the identification and the consequent valuation of the economic potential of the main technological innovations in the area desired by the manager who will apply it. As an example, the model was applied specifically in the automotive sector, but its methodology can be generalized to any area of industrial production.

PurposeFundamental management innovations have been ideated and developed in the automotive industry. Over the years, carmakers have radically modified their innovation strategies. Currently, carmakers are increasingly adopting open innovation approaches, moving from a closed to open innovation paradigm. The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the evolution of the innovation activities performed by carmakers and to propose an original periodisation of innovation strategies in the automotive industry since its origins.Design/methodology/approachThis paper analyses the relevant literature and proposes a theoretical framework that defines how innovation strategies have changed from the birth of the automotive industry to current times. A detailed in-depth case study of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), one of the top ten global carmakers, is used to corroborate the theoretical framework. The case study reconstructs the entire evolution of the innovation strategies of the company from its origins to the present day.FindingsThe paper proposes an original periodisation by identifying three evolutionary phases of innovation strategies pursued by carmakers: “internal innovation”, “collaborative innovation” and “towards open innovation”. Each phase embraces a historical period, and for each period, the most relevant managerial aspects, as well as the types and direction of knowledge flows for fostering innovation, are analysed. The case study provides clear evidence that FCA has undergone the three above-cited phases in fostering its innovation strategies.Originality/valueThe study reconstructs the evolution of the innovation strategies performed by global carmakers, proposing an original periodisation of the transitions that occurred in practice in the automotive industry. This paper is among the first to explore the evolution of innovation strategies in the automotive industry since its origins to date and to highlight the salient differences that have occurred over time.

Malaysia intends to ride on the crest of the coming i.4.0 wave. According to the 2016 GE Global Innovation Barometer study, a significant number of Malaysian executives felt positive about embracing i4.0 vis-a-vis their global peers. On the surface, Malaysia appears ready for its own i4.0 revolution. According to the WEF's Networked Readiness Index on digital readiness, Malaysia was ranked 6th in terms of having the most tech-savvy government in the world. The automotive sector is ideally suited to kickstart the i4.0 revolution as it was traditionally regarded as the “industry of industries” – particularly due to its traditional role in spearheading wider, cross-sectoral industrialisation. However, Malaysia is not yet ready to embrace the 4th Industrial Revolution. This chapter discusses the obstacles, challenges, and opportunities facing i4.0 uptake in the Malaysian automotive industry. It ends by recommending a unique pathway for i4.0 adoption in the sector.

Successful cooperation between large manufacturers and their suppliers is a crucial aspect, especially in the automotive industry. Such mutually beneficial cooperation requires at least a certain level of integration and interoperation of the partners’ IT and e-business systems. This chapter looks at two approaches in order to achieve this goal: sector-specific harmonization (in the form of electronic marketplaces) and international, committee-based standardization. This chapter shows that SMEs are facing a severe disadvantage in both cases. This is, however, less pronounced in a formal standards setting, in which capabilities of the individual representatives are more important, at least at the working level.

Magnesium alloy as a green material in the 21st century, because of its excellent physical and mechanical properties of metallic materials as an ideal in the automotive industry, electronic industry and aviation, aerospace and other industries[1]. However, poor corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys become an important issue hinder application of magnesium alloys[2]. So magnesium alloy corrosion problems and the current status of research paper reviews several magnesium alloy protection methods at home and abroad, and also highlighted with our latest laser shock (LSP) study of AZ91 magnesium alloy at high strain rates of corrosion resistance results.


Subject Outlook for the automotive sector. Significance The Brazilian automotive industry, one of the worst-affected sectors during the prolonged economic crisis, has been showing signs of recovery. Production and sales have experienced some improvement recently, although they remain below pre-recession levels. Production levels have been higher than domestic sales, as some output has been exported. The sector may play a key role in jump-starting the Brazilian economy. Impacts Domestic auto sales still depend on improvements in income, credit and employment conditions. New investments may be postponed by automakers if a decision is not taken on “Route 2030”. EU-Mercosur trade discussions may directly affect the Brazilian auto industry.

The automotive industry is one of the most dynamically growing fields of the manufacturingarea. Besides this, it has very strict rules concerning safety and reliability. In our work, our aim is to point out the importance of the automotive industry (based on statistics) and the rules in connection with risk and root cause analysis. The most important risk analysis method is the Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA). According to standards and OEM regulations, FMEA is obligatory in the automotive sector. In our study, we summarise the area of FMEA usage, its types and process steps.
