Pure Fiji is a privately-held, Fijian-owned company providing quality, USA niche market, botanical skin care products, while passionately concerned for the local environment and development of rural women in Fiji. This paper explores the companys success factors and its contribution to local development, while establishing a profitable, rapidly growing company with an international reputation for its environmentally friendly, botanical products targeted at the rich and famous, particularly in the USA. The paper also explores Pure Fijis international expansion approach, which is cautious and based on careful supplier selection and relationship management.

Interest in the fate of the German psychoanalysts who had to flee Hitler's Germany and find refuge in a new nation, such as the United States, has increased. The ‘émigré research’ shows that several themes recur: (1) the theme of ‘loss’ of one's culture, homeland, language, and family; and (2) the ambiva-lent welcome these émigrés received in their new country. We describe the political-social-cultural context that existed in the United States during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. Documentary evidence found in the FBI files of three émigré psychoanalysts, Clara Happel, Martin Grotjahn, and Otto Fenichel, are then presented in combination with other source material. This provides a provisional impression of how each of these three individuals experienced their emigration. As such, it gives us elements of a history. The FBI documents suggest that the American atmosphere of political insecurity and fear-based ethnocentric nationalism may have reinforced their old fears of National Socialism, and contributed to their inclination to inhibit or seal off parts of them-selves and their personal histories in order to adapt to their new home and become Americanized. They abandoned the rich social, cultural, political tradition that was part of European psychoanalysis. Finally, we look at these elements of a history in order to ask a larger question about the appropriate balance between a liberal democratic government's right to protect itself from internal and external threats on the one hand, or crossover into the blatant invasion of civil rights and due process on the other.

Sandra Ramos (b. 1969) is one of the few artists to reflect critically on both sides of the Cuban di-lemma, fully embodying the etymological origins of the word in ancient Greek: di-, meaning twice, and lemma, denoting a form of argument involving a choice between equally unfavorable alternatives. Throughout her works she shines a light on the dilemmas faced by Cubans whether in Cuba or the United States, underlining the bad personal and political choices people face in both countries. During the hard 1990s, while still in Havana, the artist focused on the traumatic one-way journey into exile by thousands, as well as the experience of profound abandonment experienced by those who were left behind on the island. Today she lives in Miami and operates a studio there as well as one in Havana. Her initial disorientation in the USA has morphed into an acerbic representation and critique of the current administration and a deep concern with the environmental collapse we face. A buffoonlike Trumpito has joined el Bobo de Abela and Liborio in her gallery of comic characters derived from the rich Cuban graphic arts tradition where she was formed. While Cuba is now represented as a rotten cake with menacing flies hovering over it ready to pounce, a bombastic Trumpito marches across the world stage, trampling everything underfoot, a dollar sign for a face.

The importance of community attitude and participation for the success and sustainability of cultural festivals has been steadily increasing in recent years. The Chuncheon Puppet Festival (CPF) is an international festival that has been held every year since 1989 in Chuncheon, Korea. The festival has several distinctive characteristics as a sustainable event because: (a) it maintains its single genre of puppet performances based on modern cultural art; (b) it is well-established as the festival for the local residents of Chuncheon City and is planned by local community residents and local small companies, not by government agencies or global large entrepreneurs; (c) it helps children to have an interesting cultural experience in the local environment; and (d) it is regularly hosted in August, an off-season for festivals in Korea that was chosen by residents as it is a school holiday season. However, there is still room for improvement to secure its place as a successful sustainable festival. The following might be considered: (i) increased exchange of human resources among the festival executive members, community groups, and the public staff in Chuncheon City; (ii) local residents should maintain full control of the festival; and (iii) a local cultural trust should be established by cultural art professionals, local resident organizations, puppet show professionals, and public agency staff. The CPF is a typical example of a successful sustainable festival with proactive and supportive community participation and a large number of volunteers that help to increase local competitiveness and sustainable local development. This case report delivers insightful lessons and messages to guide what needs to be preconditioned for local cultural festivals to be sustainable and successful for a long time in many destinations, where they can contribute as efficient catalysts for regional tourism development.

Case overview This case focuses on the international expansion of Hon Chuan Enterprise, a beverage packaging and filling company headquartered in Taiwan. The company has set foot in Africa after its development in mainland China and Southeast Asia. Its 41st factory has just started production in Mozambique, Africa. The African base may help the company reach the turnover milestone of NT$20bn (approximately US$640m) in the next year. This NT$20bn turnover has been a target every year since 2013, but they have so far failed to reach it. As an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in beverage packaging and filling, Hon Chuan to some extent relies on customers that own brands. After losing a key customer in mainland China, the company has experienced a three-year slump that forced the company’s president, Hish-Chung Tsao, to modify his strategy. Africa was the new battlefield bearing his ambition. His intention was not just to add another manufacturing base, but to develop its own beverage brands as an OBM. Yet, how could this be achieved in Africa? It would be a new journey full of challenges. Africa was more complex than other markets. The company’s first factory there had just been established, and its future was still unknown. Expected learning outcomes This case is appropriate for courses in international business, emerging markets, corporate strategy and marketing management. After studying the case, students should be able to understand international expansion of a manufacturing company in emerging markets; understand several key emerging markets of the world and learn what CAGE distances are; identify Hon Chuan’s success factors, challenges and necessary capabilities for future development and then comprehend why it is important to upgrade from OEM to OBM; and learn how to develop beverage brands in emerging markets. Purpose This paper aims to gain insight into the preferences of US customers regarding Korean food, and to categorize these customers according to the reasons for their preferences. Design/methodology/approach The study was conducted with a sample of customers in Korean restaurants in the USA. Findings Cluster 1 was a group whose members were attracted to Korean culture; Cluster 2 was a group whose members were passionate about Korean food; Cluster 3 was a group seeking healthy and exotic food; and Cluster 4 was a low-interest group. Each cluster had a different socio-demographic profile, favored a different Korean menu, identified different success factors for Korean restaurants, described different expectations and experiences of Korean restaurants and had different preferences regarding Korean food services. Practical implications Active promotion of Korean food and Korean culture may be appropriate for Cluster 1, while developing a healthy and exotic menu may attract Cluster 3. Maintaining Cluster 2 is deemed important, while a strategic approach is necessary to appeal to Cluster 4. Originality/value This study will contribute theoretically and practically to understanding food globalization, ethnic restaurants and segmentation by preference reasons.

O objetivo geral deste artigo é analisar a sustentabilidade ambiental do turismo na Bahia, sob a ótica do desenvolvimento local, tomando como referência o município de Itacaré que tem vivenciado nos anos 2000 uma “explosão” dessa atividade. Insere-se o aspecto ambiental em função de que o turismo desenvolvido no município está fortemente associado ao meio ambiente local. Parte-se assim dos intensos debates acerca das relações entre desenvolvimento e meio ambiente, propondo-se uma abordagem interdisciplinar baseada na problemática ambiental, especificamente a respeito das externalidades derivadas da atividade econômica exercida pelo homem sobre o meio natural, aqui tratada pela ótica da atividade turística. Em termos metodológicos, faz-se uso da pesquisa descritiva e metodológica, a partir da análise bibliográfica e de pesquisa de campo. Foram entrevistados e solicitados a responder ao questionário estruturado 30 empreendedores, diretores e gerentes das empresas que atuam no setor de hospedagem, no período de 13 a 21 de junho 2016, na localidade de Itacaré, Bahia. Esse destino turístico está inserido na Costa do Cacau, onde prevalece a prática do Ecoturismo. Este se diferencia, dos demais segmentos do turismo, por se apoiar em valores que reforçam o compromisso com a preservação ambiental e a interação com a comunidade local. Para tanto, a pesquisa privilegia dois recortes metodológicos: um recorte quantitativo, denominado Quociente Locacional (QL) e, um recorte analítico, utilizado para a caracterização de aglomerações produtivas em regiões de baixo e médio desenvolvimento, denominado Arranjo Produtivo Local (APL). Diante das análises realizadas, concluiu-se que a localidade estudada pode ser identificada como APL de turismo em fase de consolidação. Na dimensão ambiental constatou-se a necessidade de implementação de ações, públicas e privadas, que direcionem e potencializem medidas que elevem a atividade turística de forma sustentável. Especificamente, relacionadas a redução do consumo de água e energia, aproveitamento da água da chuva, gerenciamento de resíduos sólidos e implementação de coleta seletiva. Espera-se como resultado deste trabalho, subsidiar o desenvolvimento de políticas públicas direcionadas ao desenvolvimento sustentável do turismo. Ecotourism and Local Productive Arrangement: an analysis of environmental sustainability in Itacaré (BA, Brazil) ABSTRACT The general objective of this article is to analyze the environmental sustainability of tourism in Bahia under the perspective of local development, taking as reference the municipality of Itacaré, which has experienced in the year 2000 an "explosion" of this activity. The environmental aspect is inserted because tourism developed in the municipality is strongly associated with the local environment. It is based on the intense debates about the relationship between development and the environment, proposing an interdisciplinary approach based on the environmental issue, specifically on the externalities derived from economic activity carried out by the man on the natural environment, here treated by the view of tourist activity. In methodological terms, descriptive and methodological research is used, from bibliographic analysis and field research. Thirty entrepreneurs, directors and managers of companies operating in the lodging sector were interviewed and asked to respond to the structured questionnaire, from June 13 to 21, 2016, in the city of Itacaré, Bahia. This tourist destination is inserted in the Cacao Coast where the practice of Ecotourism prevails. This is different from other tourism segments, because it relies on values that reinforce the commitment to environmental preservation and interaction with the local community. For this, the research privileges two methodological cuts: a quantitative cut, called Locational Quotient (QL) and, an analytical cut, used for the characterization of productive agglomerations in low and medium development regions, denominated Local Productive Arrangement (APL). In view of the analysis carried out, it was concluded that the studied locality can be identified as APL of tourism in consolidation phase. In the environmental dimension, it was verified the need to implement public and private actions that direct and potentiate measures that increase tourism activity in a sustainable manner. Specifically, related to reduction of water and energy consumption, use of rainwater, solid waste management and implementation of selective collection. As a result of this work, it is hoped to support the development of public policies directed to the sustainable development of tourism. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine subsidiary positioning within the dynamic business networks in the context of multinational companies (MNCs). The research question of the study is: How does the positioning of a subsidiary emerge through strategic practices in the dynamic business networks of an MNC? Design/methodology/approach The study relies on the IMP view on strategy with a focus on market positioning activity and the strategy-as-practice approach. Positioning is seen as a question of strategic practices in the interactive spheres of the subsidiaries. In the empirical part of the study, the authors examine the practices of a forest machine industry multinational through longitudinal interview and archival data on three of its sales subsidiaries in Sweden, Russia and the USA. Findings The study defines core tensions in subsidiary interactive spheres and the related strategic practices that shape the positioning of the subsidiaries. The study models the practice-based network positioning of MNC subsidiaries as a dynamic play of relationship tensions. Originality/value Prior research has focused either on the internal organizing of the MNCs or embeddedness of subsidiaries in their local environment. Less attention has been paid to the practices of positioning through which the subsidiaries deal with the inevitable tensions at the intersection of the internal and external networks.

The Coastal Collection of Paraná: territories and perspectives and especially in its fifth volume: DEVELOPMENT, PUBLIC POLICIES AND HEALTH is an initiative headed by the Postgraduate Program in Sustainable Territorial Development – PPGDTS at the Federal University of Paraná - UFPR. It is a collective effort among knowledge agents, that is, research teachers, students engaged in research, public agents and local community actors, and aims to add value to the production of knowledge about the regional reality, in a plot that expresses the activities of research, teaching and extension carried out in a synergic and cooperative manner along the coast of Paraná State. The volume consists of 16 chapters, organized in three parts: Development, territory and job, University, inclusion and Regional development, and Territory and health. It is the result of the efforts of a team of teachers and students already in the middle of consolidating their capacities as educators and researchers. The approaches presented result from a long and dense practice of reflections, interactive actions among academic and community agents, within an epistemic and methodological perspective, compatible with the current forms of cooperative production among several disciplines. It is an important and vigorous exercise of knowledge production, in line with a university project that reaffirms its vocation and mission focused on regional and local development, by valuing the rescue of knowledge and community practices, by encouraging and invitation to the dialogue of academic knowledge with the rich cultural heritage of coastal populations.

Organizations continually look for ways to do more with less. One of the most important methods today for helping improve the company bottom line involves linking experts in Communities of Practice to find, share and validate best practices, ideas and solutions. This chapter examines how several best-practice organizations select Communities of Practice, provide support for their ongoing work, develop specialized roles to sustain their efforts, and use technology to bolster the rich tacit knowledge exchange offered by these entities. APQC has also developed a list of critical success factors for Communities of Practice and questions to help organizations develop those factors from its research on Knowledge Management over the last eight years.
