This paper focuses on determining the opinions of primary school third-grade pupils about the conceptual meaning and use of the numbers “0” and “1”. The current study employed the case study design, which is one of the qualitative research methods. In the selection of the sample, the criterion sampling method, one of the purposive sampling methods, was used. The study was conducted with the participation of a total of 114 third-grade pupils (58 girls and 56 boys) attending two state primary schools located in the city of Ankara in the fall term of the 2019-2020 school year. As the data collection tool, a semi-structured interview form developed by the researchers in relation to the concepts of “0” and “1” was used. In the analysis of the data obtained in relation to the concepts of “0” and “1”, content analysis was used. The primary school third-grade pupils made sense of the number “0” in association with the categories of four operations, ineffective element, absorbing element, number, natural number, meaningless, valueless, absence, even number, beginning, and letter. The categories in which most thoughts about the meaning of the number “1” are gathered are number, ineffective element, and uniqueness. It was determined that the pupils are more successful in the use of the numbers “0” and “1” in the addition and subtraction operations than in the multiplication and division operations.

The ability to understand the meaning of words and sentences is an important determinant of the language development, which also indicates the development of the ability to learn. Bearing this in mind, the research was aimed at studying the level of semantic development of younger primary school-age children. Semantic development was studied from the aspect of understanding the meaning of words and their use in the following lexical relations: homonyms, antonyms, synonyms and metonyms. The research was conducted in three Belgrade primary schools during the school year 2013/2014. The sample was convenient and included 431 second- and third-grade pupils. The Semantic test (by S. Vladisavljevic) was used in the study. Research results showed that none of the pupils had provided the correct answer to all administered tasks. The best scores were achieved on the part of the test referring to antonyms, while the pupils were least successful on the tasks referring to metonyms. Additionally, third-grade pupils were more successful than younger participants, while there were no differences according to gender. The results indicated that it was necessary to devote more attention to different lexical and semantic exercises at preschool and early school age, considering the link between semantic development, the acquisition of reading and writing skills and the (un)successful mastering of the school curriculum in the majority of subjects.

IntroductionSchool-based active mile initiatives such as The Daily Mile (TDM) are widely promoted to address shortfalls in meeting physical activity recommendations. The iMprOVE Study aims to examine the impact of TDM on children’s physical and mental health and educational attainment throughout primary school.Methods and analysisiMprOVE is a longitudinal quasi-experimental cohort study. We will send a survey to all state-funded primary schools in Greater London to identify participation in TDM. The survey responses will be used for non-random allocation to either the intervention group (Daily Mile schools) or to the control group (non-Daily Mile schools). We aim to recruit 3533 year 1 children (aged 5–6 years) from 77 primary schools and follow them up annually until the end of their primary school years. Data collection taking place at baseline (children in school year 1) and each primary school year thereafter includes device-based measures of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and questionnaires to measure mental health (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire) and educational attainment (ratings from ‘below expected’ to ‘above expected levels’). The primary outcome is the mean change in MVPA minutes from baseline to year 6 during the school day among the intervention group compared with controls. We will use multilevel linear regression models adjusting for sociodemographic data and participation in TDM. The study is powered to detect a 10% (5.5 min) difference between the intervention and control group which would be considered clinically significant.Ethics and disseminationEthics has been approved from Imperial College Research Ethics Committee, reference 20IC6127. Key findings will be disseminated to the public through research networks, social, print and media broadcasts, community engagement opportunities and schools. We will work with policy-makers for direct application and impact of our findings.

This article aims to encourage the interdisciplinary study of ‘languaculture,’ an approach to language and culture in which ideology, linguistic and cultural forms, as well as praxis are studied in relation to one another. An integrated analysis of the selection of linguistic and cultural elements provides insight into how these choices arise from internalized norms and values, and how people position themselves toward received categories and hegemonic ideologies. An interdisciplinary approach will stimulate a rethinking of established concepts and methods of research. It will also lead to a mutual strengthening of linguistic, sociolinguistic, and anthropological research. This contribution focuses on Limburg and the linguistic political context of this Southern-Netherlands region where people are strongly aware of their linguistic distinctiveness. The argument of the paper is based on a case study of languaculture, viz. the carnivalesque song ‘Naar Talia’ (To Italy) by the Getske Boys from the city of Heerlen.

This study was conducted to reveal the aspect of distance education studies on teaching of mathematics with the evaluation by class teachers during the Covid-19 Pandemic period. 24 primary school teachers from Onikisubat district of Kahramanmaras province have participated in the research. The semi-structured interview form developed in line with the expert opinions was applied to the primary school teachers separately. This study was required in order to evaluate the events experienced in the distance education process due to the coronavirus pandemic and the effects of the pandemic on the field of education in the direction of the opinions of the class teachers. Qualitative research was carried out to interpret any situation from a different perspective in the study, and a case study has been conducted to reach the depth of the situation. As a data collection tool, a semi-structured interview form was prepared with the approval of expert opinions. After the data were brought together, content analysis was carried out by giving similar descriptions and describing them in a way that the reader could comprehend. The sample of the study consisted of teachers who personally experienced the process in the nearby environment, which consists of easily accessible situation sampling in order to accelerate the study. It is thought that it will be important to work properly execution of the processes that may occur in such times by determining the causes and consequences of the situations experienced in the field of education due to reasons such as the suspension of face-to-face education and the cessation of schools after the pandemic in the world. As a result of the research, suggestions will be made for the studies that can be done about teaching mathematics in distance education.

Background: Disasters are a global problem, concern every community and no community is immune from it, schools all over the world suffer from disasters, which affect children health and safety. Teachers play essential roles in child protection so, teachers’ training is very significant for effective school disaster management. The study aimed to evaluate. The effectiveness of implementing a training program on the performance of primary school teachers in Al Malikeyeh regarding disaster management. Methods: Design: Quasi-experimental design. Setting: the current study conducted in six primary schools at Al-Malikeyeh distracts. Sample: 78 school teachers. Tool of the study: Teacher's knowledge and practice about disaster management structured interview questionnaire which contained three parts: part (I): Socioeconomic data, part (II): knowledge of the teachers, part (III): practice of the teachers .Results: about 35.8% of teachers had good knowledge pre program; meanwhile post and follow up the program this percent was increased respectively 87.2 % and79.5%. Also the findings observed that 30.8% of teachers had satisfactory practice, whereas, respectively 84.6% and 76.9 of them gained satisfactory disaster management practice post and follow up the program,. Conclusion: Implementing the training program had statistically significant improvement on knowledge and skills of primary school teachers in Al-Malikyeh regarding disaster management. Recommended: Training programs and workshops about disaster issues should be organized for the school teachers and key teams on regular basis, in addition to, awareness campaigns should be implementing with employing mass and social media technologies.

En este artículo se analizan las consecuencias de la migración internacional en los procesos académicos y administrativos escolares, para ello se examinaron las funciones directivas en la inscripción de los menores migrantes de retorno a México. Los resultados se obtuvieron a partir de los datos recopilados en 34 escuelas primarias públicas de Hermosillo, Sonora, durante el ciclo escolar 2014-2015. Se aplicó una entrevista semiestructurada a 34 directores y a 3 funcionarios de la Secretaría de Educación y Cultura del estado, para identificar la dinámica administrativa que realizan al momento de recibir a los niños y las niñas con experiencia educativa en Estados Unidos, y conocer el grado de capacitación y conocimiento que tienen los directores, para facilitar el proceso de incorporación de los nuevos estudiantes al sistema educativo de Sonora.Returning migrant minors: academic problems and administrative process in the Sonoran school systemThis article analyzes the consequences of international migration for the school academic and administrative processes; for this purpose, management functions in the enrollment of migrant minors returning to Mexico were examined. The results were obtained from data collected in 34 public primary schools in Hermosillo, Sonora during the 2014-2015 school year. A semi-structured interview was conducted with 34 school principals and three officials of the state Secretariat of Education and Culture in order to identify the administrative dynamics involved when receiving children with school experience in the United States, as well as to determine the level of training and knowledge of school principals with the aim of facilitating the process of incorporation of new students into Sonora’s education system.

This investigation aimed to explore the mode of curriculum delivery in Primary School in Tshwane South District during the Covid-19 pandemic because there is insufficient research on this subject. A case study of a Primary School was used to obtain in-depth information about the mode of curriculum delivery during the Covid-19 pandemic. Using a case study was also practical because the pandemic's restrictions posed a challenge to research many schools. Data was gathered through document analysis. A qualitative approach was employed to analyze and identify categories and emerging themes from the data. An interpretive paradigm was used while connectivism theory was employed as a lens. The findings revealed that schools used face-to-face mode of curriculum delivery during the lockdown and after schools re-opened during Covid-19, resulting in a challenge with content coverage that led to revising the annual teaching plans and trimming the curriculum.

Internationally, a great number of researchers have pointed out the significance of school–family relationship in the process of children’s transition to primary schools. However, only recently has it been a subject of research in Greece. The purpose of this particular research, which has a sample of 1602 pre-primary and primary school teachers, is to investigate teachers’ viewpoints on the role of parents in the process of their children’s transition to primary school. Data has been collected through the use of questionnaires. Statistical analysis has shown that the overwhelming majority of teachers consider cooperation with parents as necessary. They indicate that the most important factors for successful transition are parents’ level of trust in teachers, their views on schools and learning, and their support for the new situation their child experiences. As far as the most appropriate practices are concerned, almost all teachers mention updating parents at the beginning of the school year, while many suggest that parents and children visit primary schools and that common meetings of both kindergarten and primary school teachers with parents take place before school begins. It therefore seems that teachers acknowledge the role of parents in the process of transition and suggest appropriate practices for their participation.

The present paper investigates the characteristics and best construction strategies of smart cities around the world, as well as the determining factors of the satisfaction of the quality of life and the importance of the value of environmental sustainability. A case study of the city of Kalampaka and its residents was examined. The survey was conducted between July 2016 and August 2016. The selection of the sample was done by using the method of simple selection and includes a random sample of N=150 individuals. Statistical analysis showed that resident’s knowledge about smart cities was fairly good (48% of sample knew the phrase “smart cities”). Furthermore, they believe that the appearance of the city of Kalampaka needs improvement (75% of sample is disappointed with the current appearance of the city). Regression analysis showed that the value of environmental sustainability is greatly influenced by the energy saving, as well as, innovation has an impact on the level of quality of life. Older people seem to be satisfied with administration’s efforts.

Globally, the use of electric vehicles, and in particular the use of electric buses, has been increasing. The city of Nanjing leads China in the adoption of electric buses, supported by city policies and infrastructure. To lower costs and provide a better service, vehicle selection is crucial, however, existing selection methods are limited. Accordingly, Nanjing Bus Company developed a test method based on road tests to select a bus. This paper presents a detailed description of the test method and a case study of its application. The method included an organization structure, selection of eight test vehicles (four 10 m length, four 8 m length) from four brands (a total of 32 test vehicles), selection of indicators and selection of routes. Data was collected from repeated drives by 65 drivers over an 8-week period. Indicators included power consumption, charging duration, failure duration and driving distance. It is concluded that the road test method designed and conducted by the Nanjing Bus Company provides a good framework for the selection of pure electric buses. Furthermore, subsequent experience with selected buses supports the validity and value of the model.
