Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common chronic disease with increasing prevalence worldwide. Prolonged uncontrolled hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia are major risk factor for its complication like neuropathy. Since there is no definite treatment for diabetic neuropathy, this study aims to evaluate the effect of resveratrol on diabetic neuropathy in high fat diet with low dose streptozotocin induced type-2 DM model in wistar albino rats.Methods: First type 2 diabetic rat model was established. Wistar albino rats, fed with high-fat diet (HFD) rendered diabetic with streptozotocin, were divided into 6 groups, disease control (DC) treated with vehicle, standard control (SC) which received metformin, test groups treated with 5, 10, and 20 mg/kg b.w. of resveratrol and combination of half dose of metformin and resveratrol (10 mg/kg) (TC). A group of six normal animals served as normal control (NC), another six as HFD control. Fasting plasma glucose, lipid profile were measured one week after induction of diabetes. The animals were then treated orally for 2 weeks after which the same parameters were repeated. Behavioral biomarkers for neuropathy are measured in 4 weeks and 6 weeks of treatment. The in-vivo results were analyzed by one way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s multiple comparison test for biochemical parameters and Kruskal Wallis test followed by Dun’s multiple comparison test for behavioral biomarkers.Results: Increase in fasting plasma glucose (FPG), deranged lipid profile, increased neuropathy in DC compared to NC, HFD control while a significant decrease in FBG, improved pain behavior with SC, test groups (p<0.05) as compared to the DC group.Conclusions: Resveratrol prevents diabetic neuropathy.

The present study was elucidating the cardioprotective activity of hydroethanoic extract of Zanthoxylum armatum (Z. armatum) fruit on serum cardiac markers, lipid profile and the level of antioxidants in experimentally induced myocardial infarction (MI). The hydroethanolic extract of Z. armatum fruit was administered at a dose of 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight for 30 days to male Wistar albino rats. On 28th and 29th day, isoproterenol (ISO) (8.5mg/100g body weight) wasadministered to induce MI. Animals were sacrificed; blood and heart tissues were removed and the biochemical parameters were carried out. Serum markers such as aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) and troponin –T were significantly (p<0.05) increased after ISO treatment. Altered lipid profile and significant changes in enzymic and non- enzymic antioxidants were also observed in MI. The altered levels were brought back to near normal by the administration of hydroethanoic extract of Z. armatum fruit which might be due to the active phytoconstituents present in it.

Biochemical parameters, activity levels of marker enzymes and serum electrolytes of Wistar albino rats fed naturally ripe (control), unripe and artificially ripened mango pulp formulated diets were investigated. Ripe and unripe fruits were collected and used for the study and artificially ripened mangoes were obtained by wrapping unripe fruits with dark polyethylene bag; treatment with calcium carbide and by dipping into hot water. After ripening, the mango samples were air-dried, pulverized and used to formulate the 10%, 20%, 30% diets fed to rats for 28 days and their plasma collected for biochemical investigations. At 10% level of incorporation, plasma protein concentration in the control (65.63±0.12 mg/dl) was significantly higher (p< 0.05) than values for unripe groups (55.50±1.91 mg/dl) and calcium carbide (56.97±1.27 mg/dl) while Albumin concentration was highest in the unripe (41.33±3.58 mg/dl) but lowest in the calcium carbide (33.50±0.69 mg/dl) but at 20 and 30% levels, no significant difference was observed for both parameters. Billirubin was significantly higher in the calcium carbide groups but lowest in the control groups at all levels of incorporation while Creatinine and Urea revealed no significant difference at all levels. Marker enzyme assay showed significant variations only in the concentrations of Alkaline phosphatase and Gamma glutamyl transterase at the 30% level of incorporation only. Electrolyte assay revealed that at 30% level of incorporation, significantly lower levels of potassium were observed in the calcium carbide (3.43±0.06 mg/dl) group compared to the control (3.80±0.17 mg/dl).Thus, artificial ripening of fruits may adversely affect Biochemical parameters, activity levels of marker enzymes and serum electrolytes.
