The commercialisation of cocoa production in Ghana has a long history dating back to the nineteenth century. The process of commercial development in cocoa is well documented and provides an alternative mode to contemporary models of commercialisation rooted in the adoption of modern technology and integration of farmers into markets. This working paper critically analyses frameworks for agricultural commercialisation in cocoa through intensification based on the uptake of synthetic inputs and hybrid seeds, by placing agricultural development within a broader framework of the historical development of the frontier in Ghana, and the related problems of ecological and economic crises. The study examines access to land, labour and technology, and how the complex interactions of scarcity of access to physical resources and labour influence farmers’ farming strategies and adoption of technology.

The present day farming habitually employ trendy know-how such as automation, warmth and moisture sensors, aerial images, and GPS know-how. These highly developed devices and accuracy farming and mechanical structure permit business to be more money-making, competent, safer, and extra environmentally gracious. Contemporary farming knowledge is used to develop the wide types of production learn working by farmers. It is the basis of technological transformation. Advocating technology transfer should believe the various kinds of social capital as a choice policy alternative to the existing top down move towards in order to get better smallholder source of revenue. The key technological know-how modernization in the breathing space encompass paying attention about the areas such as indoor vertical farming, automation and robotics, livestock technology, modern greenhouse practices, precision agriculture and artificial intelligence, and block chain.                Contemporary agricultural practices use mechanized tools for irrigation, tilling and harvesting beside with hybrid seeds. In India, the cultivation know-how are labour intensive, whereas the contemporary agriculture equipment are mostly capital intensive. In this background, the researcher mainly concentrates on Technological Transformation and Progress of Agricultural Development in Gudiyattam Taluk of Vellore of Tamil Nadu in analytical perspectives.

Cocoa is an important crop to the economies of countries such as Nigeria, Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana and Cameroon in West Africa. This study ascertained the adoption levels of farmers in cocoa rehabilitation programmes in South West, Nigeria. Data for the study were collected from 240 cocoa farmers through the use of interview schedule and focus group discussion. Multistage sampling procedure was used in selecting respondents. Data were analysed using percentage and mean statistics. Results revealed that, adoption index was high in planting young cocoa seedlings under old cocoa trees for the three groups of farmers - farmers that benefitted from government agency cocoa resuscitation programme (98.0%), farmers that benefitted from non-governmental agency cocoa resuscitation programme (94.0%) and farmers that benefitted from both governmental and non-governmental agencies cocoa resuscitation programmes (95.0%). Low adoption index (38.0%, 32.0% and 33.0%) were recorded in coppicing technique for the three groups of farmers, respectively. The most helpful agency in the adoption of cocoa resuscitation programmes was Agricultural Development Programme (M=2.80). To improve the level of adoption of cocoa resuscitation programmes, Federal Government of Nigeria through Ministry of Agriculture should provide more incentives geared towards encouraging increased participation of the organized private sector in cocoa production.

Extension system has to be broadened by incorporating innovative extension approaches to manage present day challenges in agriculture viz., climate change, unpredictable and shifting weather, dwindling resources and population stress. With global competitiveness and market liberalization farmers are required to adjust their production portfolio to the emerging trends in food consumerism in domestic as well as global markets. With improving quality production and better job opportunities in rural areas the livelihood security of the farmers will definitely change the face of Indian agriculture. Sustainable agricultural development is very important for the security of rural livelihood. Farmers need information to make necessary decision to improve their production in agriculture for which a strong network of extension system is functioning, along with government initiative, extension scientists and functionaries working for agricultural development. The role of extension system is to groom farmers into the most intelligent decision maker. The use of internet, mobile and video- conferencing assists them for getting technical helps about farming. A number of research works reported that sixty per cent of the farmer households did not access any information on modern technology. Lack of better and up-to-date information that has made most farmers failed to make uninformed decisions on farming practices leading to unnecessary losses. Mobile internet in India has the strong potential to improve small farmer’s access to agricultural knowledge and information. The internet and social media infiltration are likely to increase substantially in near future. These situation presents an opportunity for each farmers to use social media for sharing agrarian information to rural mobile internet users. WhatsApp; one of the most popular social media tools offers many unique advantages, which makes it a potent agricultural extension tool. However, its use is ushers by many challenges, which need to be addressed for it to be effective. This article reviews the innovative extension approach, Whattsup as a farming solution, its advantages, applications and challenges involved.

Cocoa is one of the agricultural commodities that have important role and are reliable in realizing agricultural development program of Indonesia. The cocoaproduction of Indonesia tends to decrease that caused by in appropriate farming. This research aimed to evaluate the shade management to cocoa productivity and evaluating the correlation between soil quality and the cocoa production with the different shade management. This research was conducted from October 2016 until June 2017 in Kaliwining Experimental Station and Soil Laboratory of Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute (ICCRI), Jember, Indonesia. Clones at the trial plots were Sulawesi 1 and Sulawesi 2, 10 years old, and arranged in 3 m x 3 m spacing. The design of this research was conducted by observing parameters of sample trees on cocoa field. This research used three observation plots, with shade trees of leucaena (Leucaena sp.), teak (Tectona grandis), and teak combined with krete (Cassia surithensis) shade. The results indicated that shade species affected the cocoa production. Teak shade gave higher production of cocoa (i.e 3,01 kg.tree-1) compared to other species of shade (1.83 and 1.39 kg.tree-1 for leucaena and teak and krete combination, respectively). The correlation of soil quality with cocoa production showed that soil calcium content, earthworm biomass and soil bulk density were positively correlated with the production of cocoa. Shade species greatly affected the production in combination with the soil quality.

Colombia is currently one of the most promising countries with regard to its potential for agricultural development and for generating food supply for current and future human generations. This is owing to factors such as availability of land, water, topographical diversity, as well as political factors. Nevertheless, Colombia will reach this full potential if it adopts available technologies that can meet the current global challenges faced by the agriculture in the 21st century: among others, world population growth, increase in average life expectancy, high degree of malnutrition, climate change, wrong agricultural practices. Here is presented how modern biotechnology is an important ally as a wide range of technologies and innovative systems can be applied where they are most needed: for increasing cultivation productivity, resisting both biotic and abiotic factors, and ensuring food safety. In this study is showed evidence with regard to significant benefits of adopting biotechnological crops to contribute to food safety and how they are already being implemented in both developed and developing countries. Using modern technology, there are open opportunities for the country in search of circular bio-based economy, strengthen its food sovereignty and to serve as an agricultural breadbasket to Latin America and the World.

In this paper, the example of cocoa production in Ghana is used to explore how the narratives portraying African farmers have changed over the last 70 years. These evolving narratives are explored through the notion of a ‘good farmer’. The argument is that, as the image of African farmers has been progressively rehabilitated (from ignorant and tradition-bound to skilled and research-minded), the image of formal research and extension has suffered. This reversal was associated with the progressive disempowering of formal agricultural research. With the recent renewed interest in agricultural development, narratives about African farmers are again evolving: ‘good farmers’ are now increasingly being defined as those who approach their farming as a proper business.

Global and national scientific and technological trends create new conditions for growth in the agricultural sector, where advances in digital technologies are a key factor. The use of advances in robotics, biotechnology in agriculture, the introduction of platform solutions for management, create new breakthrough conditions for agroeconomic growth. A number of conditions are formulated under which traditional factors of agroeconomic growth are transformed into an innovative resource for achieving sustainable agricultural development.

Agriculture is considered to be a vital aspect of Algeria’s national economy and rural development. Achieving sustainable agricultural production, generating employment, reducing imports and minimising post-harvest crops losses are the major objectives of the Algerian government. However, based on the evaluation of existing policies, this study found that poor governance is hampering the agriculture sector, particularly in terms of management of financial resources, where most financial investments are made only for short-term gains. The lack of awareness about the importance of post-harvest practices and lack of using modern technology threaten the growth of this sector. Adopting sound post-harvest methods can reduce food losses and wastage in every stage of the food supply chain, and integration of modern techniques, skilled labour, and education training systems are very important if agriculture in Algeria is to progress.

Technology adoption by farmers is an important factor in agricultural development in both developing and developed countries that has not been achieved over the past years. The level of technology adoption is highly dependent on farmers’ beliefs and attitudes. Therefore, adoption studies are important to identify beliefs and attitudes of farmers that affect decision making. The present study tries to explain and identify the effect of motivation on farmers’ behavior to acquire knowledge and what are their beliefs and motives that underlie adoption of technology. The theory of planned behavior provides a structure to identify farmers’ behavioral intention with respect to attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control. The Self Determination Theory provides an explanatory system for the understanding of the motivation behind volitional behavior. These two theories serve as the key methodology for the study. The results revealed that, farmers’ participation in technology dissemination programmes and their willingness to gain information and skills have a significant relationship with intrinsic motivation. Further, those farmers hold positive beliefs towards new technology adoption and innovations. Therefore, two types of extension approaches are needed to enhance the technology adoption for intrinsically motivated and extrinsically motivated farmers.
