This article focuses on there being a need for tools that can facilitate coding and analysis processes for news reports. The study was based on a set of economic news replete with specific terms, interpretations, expertise and metaphorical description of events. In most cases it can be argued that the content of the texts is complicated, thus “classical” content analysis may require additional iterations and increased attention to the analytical procedure. The study highlights the methodological, analytical features of the semantic network approach (SNA) in comparison with the content analysis and Text Mining approaches based on analyzing six economic news items containing the terms “rising prices” and “inflation”. SNA is distinguished by simplification of large unstructured data processing with emphasis on content. The preparation and calculation of network metrics for each news report leads to the most significant concepts being reflected. That simplifies the content analysis of a larger body of texts. In several cases visualization shows different semantic positions of “inflation” being a synonym for “rising prices” depending on the topic. As an important result, regardless of the volume and visual structure of the news message, these terms can be considered as leading in the corresponding storylines that can help conduct a discourse analysis with their mention. It is assumed that this approach will become a “supporting” tool for further quantitative and qualitative analysis of news reports, particularly on economic topics. The technical features of text preparation and semantic modeling programs can be considered as potential limitations of the approach, especially in the space of Text Mining.

The study covered economic news coverage in its different forms (news, reports, press interviews, articles, etc.) of the economic supplement of the UAE daily newspaper Al Etihad by studying a random sample of the daily economic supplement in November 2018. The study focused on several types of the journalistic forms published by the mentioned annex, and the extent of economic and development coverage of this supplement to other forms such as the publication of studies or economic analysis or the use of the investigative press with all its outputs to serve this coverage to satisfy the growing needs of readers interested in economic issues that are of interest to large numbers of readers nowadays. The study also examined the economic news forms on which the editorial policy focuses on the appendix, as well as the different sources from which the issuers of the appendix draw this information and organize these sources according to certain criteria such as relevance, credibility, inclusiveness and others. This is to know the percentage of ready-made news (negative) and news produced by the newspaper staff (positive) and news from public institutions that the newspaper works to support and reformulate it (positive / negative). The researcher relied on the methodology of the media survey and the content analysis tool for seven economic supplements for the newspaper mentioned (days 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 26/11/2018). The study included three axes, one devoted to the theoretical framework and the second to the methodological framework. The third axis was devoted to the analytical study.

This study investigates to what extent audiovisual infotainment features can be found in the narrative structure of television news in three European countries. Content analysis included a sample of 639 news reports aired in the first 3 weeks of September 2013, in six prime-time TV news broadcasts of Ireland, Spain, and the Netherlands. It was found that Spain and Ireland included more technical features of infotainment in television news compared to the Netherlands. Also, the use of infotainment techniques is more often present in commercial, than in public broadcasting. Finally, the findings indicate no clear pattern of the use of infotainment techniques across news topics as coded in this study.

With the development of the Internet, the media has transformed from its traditional forms of newspapers and television into online-media, which also includes news profiles on the social networks such as Vkontakte, Instagram, and Telegram. Reading news is one of the main purposes of using the internet and social media, which leads to the popularity of news aggregators. Social networks differ from traditional media in their interactivity and greater dependence on readers, since the success of a profile is based on the engagement of the audience namely, of chief relevance is the number of comments. Administrators of social media profiles would more likely publish news that generates reactions and controversy. Events covered on the news profiles are then transferred to other social media pages, where they continue to be discussed. The general mood of the society can be determined by the response of Internet users to various topics. The issue of family and marriage relations is often raised in Dagestan based social media profiles and pages. This topic is stimulated by the publication of news reports on the ratio of marriages and divorces in the republic. Since the majority of active users of social networks are young people, analyzing their views on the issue of marital relations can help to understand the future of the family in the region. Based on the results of the content analysis of the comments under the posts about marriages and divorces, we can say that, in addition to personal factors, the main reasons for high number of divorces and a decrease in the number of marriages are financial instability, as well as a change in society and its transition to modernization. The number of marriages in Dagestan is declining, while the number of divorces remains approximately at the same level, although the media focuses its attention on divorces, forming a certain picture of the world among readers.

Background: Part of the role of the media is to report any issue affecting the society to the masses. Coronavirus has become an issue of transnational concern. The importance of the media in the coverage of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Nigeria and its implications among Nigerian populace cannot be overestimated. This study evaluates how Nigerian media depict the coronavirus pandemic and how the depictions shape people’s perception and response to the pandemic. Methods: The study employed a quantitative design (newspaper content analysis and questionnaire). The content analysis examines the nature of media coverage of coronavirus in Nigeria and China using four major national newspapers (The Sun, The Vanguard, The Guardian and The Punch). The period of study ranged from January 2020 to March 2020. A total of 1070newspaper items on coronavirus outbreak were identified across the four newspapers and content-analysed. Results: The finding shows that the coverage of the pandemic was dominated by straight news reports accounting for 763 or (71.3%) of all analysed items. This was followed by opinions 169(15.8%), features 120 (11.2%) and editorials 18 (1.7%) respectively. The Punch 309 (28.9%)reported the outbreak more frequently than The Sun 266 (24.9%), The Guardian 258 (24.1%), and Vanguard 237 (22.1%). Finding further suggests that the framing pattern adopted by the newspapers helped Nigerians to take precautionary measures. Conclusion: Continuous reportage of COVID-19 has proved effective in creating awareness about safety and preventive measures thereby helping to ‘flatten the curve’ and contain the spread of the virus. However, the newspapers should avoid creating fear/panic in reporting the pandemic.

Although the media gives considerable attention to prison privatization, there have been few assessments of how newspapers portray the debate about it and how that portrayal aligns with what is known empirically about private prisons. This study addresses this gap in the literature by undertaking a content analysis of newspaper articles ( N = 131) about private prisons and private Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities, respectively. The results show that few news stories discuss the broad range of factors that scholars highlight as important aspects of the privatization debate. It is also uncommon for news reports, especially those that discuss private immigration facilities, to refer to empirical research or its importance. The implications of this limited portrayal of private facilities are discussed.

Abstract The purpose of this study is to understand the trends and problems of media coverage about Korean libraries by selecting keywords from Korean portal news articles and conducting semantic network analysis. As a result, Korean news reports focus on public libraries rather than school and university libraries. Elsewhere, libraries’ lifelong learning program performance, such as cultural events and educational lectures, are overly biased on press release. In addition, news articles in all kinds of libraries are dominated by simple publicity about businesses or events rather than policy issues about library laws, budgets and manpower. Korea’s libraries reflected in the media are analyzed as cultural and social educational institutions rather than knowledge information centers.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the Chinese media’s performance on reporting the issue of waste incineration power plants. The authors analyze the role of media in supervising relevant agencies and meeting the public need for related information. Design/methodology/approach This paper provides a content analysis of media reports toward waste incineration projects that follow the anti-incinerator event that occurred in Panyu district of Guangzhou city in 2009. The sample of this paper is based on 469 news reports that were released on the state-level search engine “ChinaSo.com” from January 2010 to June 2016. Findings Chinese media did not continue to focus on waste incineration issues after the anti-incinerator event in the Panyu district and there were only a few news reports about this topic. News reports of the information disclosure category accounts for the largest proportion but lack a depth of explanation. The proportion of news reports of media supervision and popular science information categories is relatively small. Research limitations/implications This paper is a pilot study of the media’s reporting characteristics on waste incineration issues. There are some shortcomings in terms of sample selection and analysis, more in-depth assessment will be implemented and improved upon the future research. This study highlights the importance of media reports before or after relevant events in examining the media’s social function. Besides, this study provides a new analytical idea for assessing the functions of the media on social public issues through media reports and the conclusions of this study have certain practical significance for the media to improve report behaviors. Originality/value This paper selects media reports on waste incineration power plant after the anti-incinerator event in Panyu district as media industry could pay much attention to relevant topics before the beginning of conflict events and continue tracking reports even after the events subside. This paper points out that Chinese media might increase sustained attention to waste incineration issues, strengthen the depth of interpretation, increase the supervision of relevant agencies, and enhance the relevance of the news reports to the public.

The territorial image is formed both purposefully by the subjects of image-making, and spontaneously-based on the influence of information content published in various media. The purpose of the research is to analyze the image of the Republic of Mordovia in the information space of the Volga Federal district. The image of the territory formed by external target audiences by means of news materials is studied using the method of case study and content analysis of publications: “Volga news”, “Federal Press” news of the PFD, “Pravda PFD”. The authors conclude that modern reality is perceived through the prism of the information field created by mass media. The media creates images filled with certain data, facts, colored by emotions, on the basis of which representations, opinions, judgments, and assessments are subsequently formed. The media play a significant role in shaping the territorial image, especially for external target audiences who are not familiar with the region and do not have their own assessment knowledge and experience. Most of the information content about the Republic in the studied media is related to the main thematic blocks: politics, economy, social sphere, culture (art, sports). Moreover, if in the publications “Volga news” and “Pravda PFD” mention of the region prevails in the economic block, then in the publications “Federal Press” and “Nezavisimaya Gazeta” - in the political one. The Volga news publication significantly dominates the rest in terms of the number of publications about Mordovia. The content of publications is mostly positive and neutral related to the issues of economic development of the territory and the preparation and holding of the world football championship. Pravda PFD mentions the Republic in the context of news from neighboring territories, most of the publications date back to 2018, but here the context is related to the Republic's positions among the regions of the PFD in various ratings. The publication “Federal-Press” forms a generally reflective image of the territory, focusing on the negative aspects of regional life. “Nezavisimaya Gazeta”, giving priority to political news, maintains a neutral and reflective context of publications, paying attention to the key problems of the territory. Thus, the desired image of the region is counter-dictated to the image broadcast by the media through various information channels, so it is necessary to constantly monitor the information space and timely correction of the broadcast materials.
