Rising population, economic growth and awareness regarding environmental sustainability is making the consumers as well as companies to look for alternative products. In this regard, organic food product is one of the source to reduce environmental degradation as well as lead to increased employment opportunities. This paper examines the challenges and opportunities of marketing organic food products in Dehradun city and nearby areas. Additionally it identifies the demand-supply gap and the economic viability of using organic products. Descriptive study is done on the information obtained from retailers/suppliers to study the disparities in the prices of organic food products and the reasons behind them. The study considered organic farming to be a feasible production system towards sustainable development and recommends development of an organic farming policy in Uttarakhand through wide consultation with all stakeholders. Further scope may include recyclable (environment friendly) packaging, other sustainable products such as e-vehicle for logistics and all.

The organic farming sector in developing countries is still diminutive. However, the traditional practice of organic farming by the indigenous farmers is an advantage that would help India to become a global market leader in this sector. India has the potential to emerge as a major exporter of organic produce. Organic products mature without the use of fertilizers, artificial chemicals, and pesticides. The Indian organic food market, although in its nascent stage, has started growing rapidly. Generally, consumers prefer organic food due to safety, human health, and ecological concern. Sometimes it could also be due to attributes like nutrition value, taste, originality and look of organic food. Worldwide trade in organic products is growing incredibly which has prompted experts to project consumption of organic food to be more than 25% of total food consumption by 2020. Universal consumption growth rates over the next 3-5 years will be fairly high (25 – 30%) when compared to most other categories of food. In the last decade, organic food products have been measured to do a healthier business than conventional food products. Thus the expansion of organic agriculture is seen as a part of promising promotion trends. This research reveals the percentage consumption of organic food products and provides suggestions to implement the various marketing strategies adopted by the retailers to sell the products and other factors impacting the preference of the consumers in the various strata of the society.

Last 5 years have seen lots of changes in the consumption pattern of individuals with concerns rising constantly on the quality of climate conditions, individuals have become aware about change in climate, increasing pollution, deteriorating air quality, excessive use of chemicals in the farms, increase of carbon particles in environment and impact on population. Consumers now-a-days are very particular about the products they are consuming, Thus the concept of organic food product come into picture. This concept is gaining impetus in society especially after increase in health problems in individuals. It refers to using such food product which are eco-friendly and safe. The paper is a humble attempt to understand the level of awareness about organic food products in Bengaluru. This paper also aims at understanding the consumption pattern of individuals in Bengaluru. Statistical tools like ANOVA, Regression analysis, Chi-square tests and different charts are used to analyse the data obtained from a primary survey conducted in Bengaluru. On the basis of analysis done in the paper, it is concluded that the consumption has increased lately although more awareness should be created to make the consumption more popular among consumers.

PurposeThe aim of this paper is to identify consumers' attitudes and behaviour towards organic products in Greece.Design/methodology/approachThis paper draws on a non‐probability quota sample of 660 respondents to explore the attitudes and behaviour of Greek consumers towards organic food products.FindingsGreek consumers seem to be informed about environmental and health issues. They seek information about the nutritional value of food and demand more products free from chemical residues. The results show that most consumers associate organic consumption mainly with fruit and vegetables. Although demographics seem to affect attitudes towards organics, their value in explaining actual behaviour is minimal.Research limitations/implicationsIt is recognized that the data gathered in this study focus on the metropolitan area of Thessaloniki, Greece. The specific area though, is considered to be representative of the total Greek population. The results confirm that health, concern for the environment, animal welfare and support of the local economy are drivers of organic consumption. However, there is an indication that the importance of motives and barriers may vary for different product categories and perhaps future research should focus on product segmentation.Practical implicationsAlthough certain similarities in consumers' attitudes towards organic food products have been identified, this paper records the variation in behaviour towards organics among the various consumer groups examined in Greece, and highlights the gap between attitudes and actual behaviour. Given the complexity of consumer decision making, future research should explore the other value trade‐offs that consumers make.Originality/valueThis paper attempts to provide evidence on the relatively under researched area of organics attitudes and behaviour in Greece.

This chapter aimed to investigate perceptions and attitudes of Romanian consumers about organic products, in order to study the connection between knowledge and attitudes of consumers and their place in purchase decision-making system to understand their behavior toward organic food. In the first part, after a brief introduction, the authors tried to perform a review of the literature in the field, starting from the presentation of the concept of green or ecological consumption behavior and the notions related to it. A synthetic scheme of the drivers of the green market was proposed as a conclusion of this introductory part. The main concern is about consumption of the ecological products in Romania. The authors identified a number of 17 relevant studies performed in Romania in order to help them substantiate their work. They took into account two issues, namely, Ecological Non-Food Products and Ecological Food Products.


The super-food competition in Indian consumer industry is very demanding. Indian consumers have shown growing interest in nutritious and quality food items with high nourishing value, environmental sustainability and food safety. A person with a positive attitude towards the food product of this type is more likely to make a purchase; this makes a marketer's analysis of consumer preference highly important. The primary purpose of this analysis was to examine consumer expectations for quality and safe super food items. The target demographic of this research includes consumers in Chennai region. 173 respondents were chosen using the convenience sampling method. The results of the research study have shown that factors such as ethnicity, monthly income and family status, level of intake, brand knowledge and health issues are linked to customer demand for super-food items. The Structured Equation Modeling methodology was used to define determinants that may describe consumers' propensity for purchasing these groups of food stuffs. Consumers choose food products of this type due to safety considerations, quality issues and environmental concerns, as well as to qualities such as nutritional benefit, taste satisfaction, freshness and attractiveness of organic food items that matter a lot to consumers. This work may be used into further study into the application of various marketing campaigns by advertisers and the examination of other variables.

Purpose: Food gives us essential nutrients to lead a healthy lifestyle but lately it has been found that many food products have become hazardous due to contamination and lead to many diseases. The rampant use of pesticides and chemical-based fertilizers in agriculture has, increased the productivity but at the same time they have created an alarming situation for the environment. The demand of the hour is to therefore to encourage organic farming and offer a better choice to consumers as well as save the environment. The purpose of this paper is to explore and understand the factors affecting perception of consumers on organic food products in Indian context. Design – Methodology – Approach: The study used a structured survey of 300 respondents covering metro city (India). Exploratory research was used to know the variables from the literature that affect the perception of consumers regarding organic food. Descriptive research was used to understand the demographic profile of the organic food consumer’s. Conclusive research design was used to test the hypothesis based upon the motivating and inhibiting factor in the growth of organic food. Findings: The data collected from the survey were analyzed using percent analysis and ANOVA tests. Results indicated that the intention to purchase organic products was impacted by the consumer’s belief on the safety and health aspect of the product, trust and certification, information and availability and lifestyle and are hence drivers of growth. And certain impeding factors were identified like doubt in the professed quality of organic food, lack of awareness and price parity. Social Implications: There are enough evidences of fertile land being converted into wasteland because of use of agro- chemical-based fertilizers in farming. There are also enough incidents of polluted water (ground and surface) due to agrochemical-based farming. Heavy use of pesticides leads to adverse effect on the health of farmers also. There were many reports of farmers committing suicide because of debt due to heavy investment on pesticides and fertilizers. Organic farming is a win-win proposition for environment, farmers and consumer’s. Originality/value – The study was an effort to understand awareness and perception of organic food consumers in urban India post-agriculture revolution. The result would help the organic food producing and marketing companies to understand the factors that influence the belief of consumers when they purchase organic food and henceforth they can formulate communication strategies and marketing policy based on consumer’s expectations.

The relevance of the market of the organic products is constantly on the rise, however, consumers' awareness on this matter is still understudied. Aiming to bridge this gap, we conducted ethnographic research within 6 households in three different locations in a period of 12 months. The sample units have been selected as multi-person households in accordance with previously set criteria, including age, gender, geographic and socio-economic characteristics. Qualitative analysis as well as quantitative content analysis using NVivo software package have shown that organic has been among the most frequently mentioned words in the context of food labels, and it has been mostly taken into consideration when speaking about diary, fruit and meat products. The informants have shown high level of trust in organic labels. In line with that, we further discuss the importance of customer awareness with regard to labeling organic food products as well as positive attitudes toward labels in general, their readiness to read the labels, trust in labels and pay a higher prices when comparing with the conventional food products. Finally, we provide managerial implication of our findings and recommendations for further research.

Organic products are grown under a system of agriculture without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides with an environmentally and socially responsible approach. Organic agriculture is developing rapidly and today 186 countries produce organic food commercially. Currently, only 1.5 percent of the world’s agricultural land is farmed organically. The status of organic farming in India is bestowed with lot of potential to produce all varieties of organic products due to its various agro climatic regions. In several parts of the country, the inherited tradition of organic farming is an added advantage. This holds promise for the organic producers to tap the market which is growing steadily in the domestic market related to the export market. India ranks 9th in terms of World’s organic agricultural land and 1st in terms of total number of producers. The popularity of organic food is growing dramatically as consumer seeks the organic foods that are thought to be healthier and safer. As per the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare (MoAFW), 2.78 million ha was covered under organic farming in India which is about 2 per cent of the 140.1 million ha net sown area in the country. Of this, 1.94 million ha (70%) area is under National Project on Organic Farming NPOP, 0.59 million ha (21.5%) under Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY), 0.07 million ha (2.6 %) under Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North East Region (MOVCDNER) and 0.17 million ha (6.1% ) under state schemes or non-schemes. The certified organic production for all crop categories stood at 2.6 million metric tons.in 2018-19. Sugar crops (sugarcane), oilseeds, cereals and millets, fiber crops, pulses, medicinal, herbal and aromatic plants, and spices/condiments are the highest produced organic commodities in India. However, the Indian organic food industry is curtailed by multiple challenges including reduced farm production per hectare, a general apprehension among farmers to forego the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and higher storage and transportation costs due to the lack of preservatives required for long-term storage. The states should step up their action in a concerted way to promote organic and natural farming. States can play an instrumental role in helping farmers sell their organic and natural produce by developing organic value chains, procuring organic produce and helping farmers get remunerative prices.

The market of organic products is growing as the number of people willing to consume organic food and consumer preference towards organic food products is ever increasing. The promotion of organic food products constitutes an important option not only for producers, government and consumers but also to respond to societies‘ desire for higher food quality and food production that is less damaging to environment systems and improve the quality of life; this makes the study of consumer preferences highly important. The main purpose of this study is to identify the factors influencing consumer preferences toward organic products. The target population in this research includes consumers of Kozhikode district of Kerala state of India. By making use of convenience sampling method 750 respondents have been selected. Data required for the study have been collected with the help of questionnaire.The finding of the research work revealed that gender, age, occupation, monthly income, family status, level of awareness, state of health and environmental engagement are associated with consumer preference towards organic foods. The research work shows increasing monthly income and environment engagement activities influences consumer preference towards organic food products.There is an inverse relationship between consumer awareness and consumer preferences towards organic food. Organic food considered as healthy product and it is more preferred by the green consumers. The research result suggest that Government and social organizations have to promote organic farming at the households among general public and to take necessary steps for creating a regulatory system for authenticated organic certification and labeling in order to build-up the trust and confidence in consuming organic food products.

The sector of organic agriculture is attractive for investment, and the organic food market demonstrates a dynamic growth. The article suggests methodological approaches to the analysis of demand trends on the organic food market based on the use of growth curves. The dynamics of changes in the consumption of organic products per capita is characterized by a sequential single passage of the stages of development (growth), the achievement of maximum indicators (saturation), recessions, and cessation of existence. As the main factors determining the rate of development and the potential consumption of organic food products per capita, the level of incomes and life of the population was considered. The potential consumption of organic food products per capita in different countries is grounded, taking into account these factors. Based on the analysis of the functions of the growth rates of the per capita demand for organic food products derived from the estimated demand growth curves, the stages of the life cycle of organic food products on the European markets were analyzed, and the exhaustion of the potential demand for organic products in all considered countries except Britain was identified. It is expected that the further expansion of organic food production in the European producer countries will be facilitated by the reorientation to new markets actively importing this product (China, Russia, Japan, and Singapore).
