Abstract. The Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence caused heated discussion both in society and media in Latvia. The controversy was caused because Convention is based on the understanding that violence against women is a form of gender-based violence that is committed against women because they are women. The discussion showed that there are various interpretations and misinterpretations of gender as a concept. As well as hostility towards gender equality interpreted as a propaganda against so called traditional family values. The mass media play an important role in shaping of public thought. The mass media today are the main source of information – a source which not only offers reportage about important events, but also determines the public agenda. By offering commentary on various subjects, the media construct public attitudes towards those subjects. The aim of this article is to examine how the Istanbul Convention was represented in Latvian daily newspapers, what discourses were dominating in media; what information regarding the Convention, gender and gender equality were communicated. Keywords: gender, discourse, fear, Istanbul Convention, right-wing.

This article was formulated based on interviews with 5 (five) trade union confederations from a number of confederations in Indonesia, namely: Konfederasi Serikat Pekerja Nasional (KSPN), Konfederasi Sarikat Buruh Muslimin Indonesia (KSarbumusi), Konfederasi Serikat Buruh Seluruh Indonesia (KSBSI), Konfederasi Serikat Pekerja Indonesia (KSPI), and Konfederasi Kongres Aliansi Serikat Buruh Indonesia (KKASBI). This article seeks to explore the efforts made by the trade union confederation in promoting gender equality - specifically in advancing the agenda for the prevention and elimination of sexual violence in the world of work. This article was compiled based on research with a qualitative approach, with data collection methods through interviews and literature studies. The results of this study found that the confederations interviewed had already set up internal structures that have specific functions on issues related to gender equality, gender-based violence, and women’s empowerment; although still limited and on ad-hoc basis. This research also finds that the role of the trade union confederation is particularly prominent in advocating policies related to sexual violence and gender-based violence in the world of work, such as advocating the Bill on the Elimination of Sexual Violence, and the ratification of the ILO Convention No. 190 on Violence and Harassment.

The objective is to verify the occurrence or not of placements that explicitly or implicitly constitute a violation of the dignity and rights of these women, by promoting or inciting xenophobia and gender violence in society through words, phrases or expressions capable of provoking a symbolic annihilation. To this end, a bibliographic and documentary study was carried out on the social vulnerabilities present in contemporary immigration processes, which was substantiated with content analysis (BARDIN, 2009), in a qualitative approach, of headlines published in Brazilian digital newspapers. From the analysis carried out, it was possible to infer that these media outlets have often been describing Venezuelan migration as a problem, but in a negative connotation, without taking care to describe the context more clearly and comprehensively of the issue to be reported. This article presents a biographical narrative of Christy Martin, a former world champion boxer who survived being stabbed and shot by her trainer/husband. Rooted in a sociological imagination, this biographic research chronicles Martin’s boxing career and its entanglements with gender-based violence. The boxing industry has a widely acknowledged, yet under-reported, problem with men’s violence against women. This article aims to illustrate that women’s boxing should be critically examined for the ways in which it functions both as a site of and a sanctuary from gender-based violence. Within this paper, I draw from media coverage of Christy Martin’s boxing career, over 700 pages of transcripts from the subsequent criminal trial, an interview with Martin, as well as my own research in women’s boxing, including work with survivors of domestic violence.

The European Union has kept the agenda of gender equality at the front line of legislation and policy development. The research examined the policies and the efficacy of the European Union in endorsing gender equality and determines where the Union’s system has proved to be less effective. Despite the efforts by the European Union in addressing gender-related issues, a slow improvement has been indicated in achieving gender parity. Inequality persists in many domains of gender equality, including the gender pay gap and gender-based violence. Our research suggests that adequate attention in terms of relevance, effective implementation and funding must be given to all domains of gender equality.

Abstract

The article presents the results of a collective research that had the purpose of analyzing, from a critical and gender / feminist perspective, journalistic narratives, discourses and senses in dispute expressed by graphic media of the province of Mendoza, Argentina, on different topics of gender such as violence against women. Academia is one of the main hubs for promoting gender equality and non-discrimination, yet very few programs in Romania actively tackle the topic. An assessment of students’ perceptions is thus necessary in order to identify the level of awareness around gender issues and potential barriers hindering an inclusive academic environment. The present exploratory study aims to fill this gap by providing information on four dimensions of gender equality: attitudes towards gender equality, prevalence of gender stereotypes, gender-based violence and sexual harassment, and gender-based discrimination. The questionnaire was applied online and offline between October 2018 and March 2019 to 275 students enrolled in Bachelor, Master and Doctoral studies at BabeșBolyai University, Cluj-Napoca. The study found that students had a rather high awareness about gender issues in general and held favorable views towards gender equality and its enforcement. However, female students were more prone to stereotype, claiming more traits for themselves, and were more likely than their male counterparts to experience sexual harassment and discrimination regarding professional promotion. A series of implications for practitioners and recommendations are also discussed.

The present article is elaborated with a qualitative investigative approach, some destined to the recognition of the daily and violent experiences that the women of the La Picota community live in, located in the municipality of Chinandega - Nicaragua; thus, achieving broadening the preventive approach to gender-based violence. In the writing it was possible to understand part of the way of life in the community context of research and the opinions expressed out loud by key actors for the study; proceeding to relate the community perceptions, with the collective imagery and the theoretical precepts linked to the intersections of violence. The methodology used to develop the article was qualitative and responds to anthropological research methods, using interviews and observation sheets and techniques (direct and participant) in order to extract information and content to understand the social problems of violence. And its intersections. The ethnographic method was applicable in order to project the community dynamics where the study is carried out. The research work also emerges as part of the author's close experience towards the research context for 4 years as a facilitator of processes for social and community development, with a psychosocial focus. Part of the results obtained from community research showed that sociocultural patterns that violate rural women still persist, from various social, economic, ethnic, educational, age, disability, and geographical locations of their residences. This crossing of variables forces the actor's understudy to be subjected to multiple discriminations within and outside their communities. From these edges of the intersection, the interviewees were selected who responded to various age ranges, this in order to have a more global analysis of the way in which violence is experienced and exacerbated, from the relationship of the previously referenced elements. With the analysis of the elements extracted from the key informants and the theoretical perspectives of the intersectionality of gender-based violence, it was possible to broaden the gaze towards this phenomenon that women experience and the way in which the profiles of the potential victims of this violence are examined. All this to generate a kind of diagnosis that shows where to influence in a timely manner to raise awareness about necessary changes in social behavior; some that usually justify the constant violation of rights towards women. The current effects of the pandemic are taken into consideration and as this further aggravates, the experiences of various expressions of gender-based violence against women, some of the effects of the pandemic being constant exposure within their homes, because they are living with potential aggressors and outside their homes, where they are exposed to a virus contagion, while they carry out their corresponding commercial and popular activities. By broadening their behavior towards the current scenario and the way in which this context affects them, the contributions to a preventive culture of violence against women, in family and social contexts, will be timelier.
