The aim of the research is to provide a comprehensive linguocultural characteristic of a folk tale. The research is based on the material of the Irish Fairy and Folk Tales tale anthology, compiled and edited by W. B. Yeats. The research results allow for a suggestion that linguocultural markers are to be found on both ideologic-compositional and speech levels of a text. Thus, the motives of Christian morality form the basis for reciprocal altruism which is the conceptual entity of Irish folk tales. The tale structure is often linear and consists of a short introduction, the main part and the climax turning into a short sharp denouement. Irish folk tales are often a metaphor for the rite of passage. The didactic function of tales consists in demonstrating the possibilities of sin purge through their recognition and repentance. Tales also set social rules and norms. Culture-specific language units encountered in the texts of Irish folk tales belong to different levels of the English language system. The phonetic level reveals such features as metathesis, final consonant reduction, imitation of aspiration, alliteration, wordplay based on homophony, etc. They imitate a peculiar Irish accent and exert some vernacular effect. The lexical level is represented by culture-bound vocabulary including ethnographical terms, anthroponyms and geographical names, both real and invented, various kinds of borrowings from Irish Gaeilge,quotations etc. Some cultural features are exhibited in grammar and text rhythm, chiefly through the use of specific verb forms of Irish English as well as certain correlations of repetition-based rhythmic devices – polysyndeton, diacope, anaphora, epizeuxis, symploce etc. The study of linguocultural text markers gives a comprehensive idea of intra- and extralinguistic characteristics of the tale.

The present study aims at explicating the theme of love in the folk tale Heer Ranjha through the discourse stylistics perspective. To do this, Fairclough (2015) model is employed with a focus on lexical choices. The metaphors used in the dialogues portraying the theme of love have been carefully selected, and further the linguistic pattern employed has been significantly discussed to highlight the embedded theme of love as a dominant human emotion in folk tales. The study also aims at providing a richer, more complex and enlightened canvas of feminist theory highlighting the role of women and power relations between the two sexes. The data comprises on twenty passages from the translation of ‘Heer Ranjha’ by Usborne (1973) where the translator claims to have translated the epilogue at full length while the rest of the poem has been condensed without omitting anything significantly important to the theme. The study throws light on the language of the folk tale, which reflects socio-cultural features such as the patriarchic family structure of the time through the language choices. The flute, a bamboo musical instrument, is a metaphor of love in a dream-like romantic sound. Finally, this paper helps to develop a better understanding of folktales in a particular socio-cultural background.

Technology plays a crucial role in the self-guided learning of a second language in general and English in particular. Nevertheless, many students in different contexts still ignore the application of technology-enhanced language learning (TELL) tools in enhancing their foreign language proficiency. Therefore, this study is conducted to investigate the attitudes towards the use of TELL tools in English-language learning (ELL) among English majors at one university in Vietnam. To collect data, 197 English majors participated in finishing the questionnaire, and 20 students were invited to join the interviews. The findings are that the majority of students have positive attitudes towards the use of TELL tools and the frequency of using these tools is very high. In addition, the results also reveal that there is no significant difference in attitudes towards and frequency of using TELL tools in learning English in terms of the year of study. However, students of different levels of academic achievements have different attitudes towards using TELL tools and use TELL tools to learn English differently. This book explores the legacy of the Brothers Grimm in Europe and North America, from the nineteenth century to the present. The book reveals how the Grimms came to play a pivotal and unusual role in the evolution of Western folklore and in the history of the most significant cultural genre in the world—the fairy tale. Folklorists Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm sought to discover and preserve a rich abundance of stories emanating from an oral tradition, and encouraged friends, colleagues, and strangers to gather and share these tales. As a result, hundreds of thousands of wonderful folk and fairy tales poured into books throughout Europe and have kept coming. The book looks at the transformation of the Grimms' tales into children's literature, the Americanization of the tales, the “Grimm” aspects of contemporary tales, and the tales' utopian impulses. It shows that the Grimms were not the first scholars to turn their attention to folk tales, but were vital in expanding readership and setting the high standards for folk-tale collecting that continue through the current era. The book concludes with a look at contemporary adaptations of the tales and raises questions about authenticity, target audience, and consumerism. The book examines the lasting universal influence of two brothers and their collected tales on today's storytelling world.

AbstractThe present study investigates variability among raters from different linguistic backgrounds, who evaluated the pragmatic performance of English language learners with varying native languages (L1s) by using both self- and peer-assessments. To this end, written discourse completion task (WDCT) samples of requesting speech acts from 10 participants were collected. Thereafter, the participants were asked to assess their peers’ WDCTs before assessing their own samples using the same rating scale. The raters were further asked to provide an explanation for their rating decisions. Findings indicate that there may indeed be a link between a rater’s language background and their scoring patterns, although the results regarding peer- and self-assessment are mixed. There are both similarities and differences in the participants’ use of pragmatic norms and social rules in evaluating appropriateness.

This quantitative research aims to examine how different levels of motivation relate to frequency of occurrence of autonomous language learning activities undertaken by undergraduate students. Eight hundred and sixty-two college students from 10 vocational training programs of a public university located in Ecuador, South America, participated in this study. Spratt’s questionnaire that regards ‘autonomy and motivation’ as a cyclical interaction in the language learning process, was updated by the researchers, adding digital education elements. The data were analyzed using the program SPSS v24.0.0 The results showed that there was a significant relationship between: the language learning stimulation generated by professors and the participants’ learning attitudes. In addition, it was determined that the most frequent language practices in which the participants showed greatest autonomy were: listening to songs in English language, worrying about the correct pronunciation, and noting down interesting words or expressions in English.

The strong and vibrant Russian Old Believer community of Eastern Latvia (Latgalia district) produced many gifted artists, writers, poets and storytellers. Some of them went beyond the traditional topical limitations of Orthodox Christianity and wrote poetry and fiction on non-religious matters, such as love, family relations, history and the like. This research aims to bring to light one particular short story The Forced Love written by a self-madeauthor of Old Believer origin, Maria Pakhomovna Blokhina (1926-2010) to a broader readership. The story has been heavily influenced by Russian folk tales and contains valuable insights of the local ethnography and dialect. This study offers an examination of the story's origins, plot, characters and language and aims to demonstrate the literary and folk heritage of the story, to demonstrate the story’s ethnographic relevance of the period and to examine how the deliberate use of the local dialect by the author reveals her creativity in producing a text close to the style of a folk tale.

The present study investigates the influence of some variables related to attiudes, motivation, and academic achievement. As students of the intensive English language program at Community Service and Continuious Education Deanship (CSCED) show different levels of education, different purposes of study, and different levels of previous training, the research investigates the effect of such variables on student attitude. The variable of sex is also added as the intensive English language program in CSCED at University of Tabuk consists of both male and female students. To collect the required data, a 5-point Likert scale attitude questionnaire was developed. The attitude scale involved 32 items. According to the results of the study, students hold positive attitudes toward the intensive English language program in CSCED at the Tabuk University. In addition, there are no statistically significant differences in student attitude toward the intensive English language program in CSCED at the University of Tabuk according to the following variables: teacher nationality (p-value > 0.05), their level of education (p-value > 0.05), and their sex (p-value > 0.05). There are statistically significant differences between attitudes of students toward the intensive English language program in the CSCED in the University of Tabuk according to the following variables: their academic achievement (p-value < 0.05), their purpose of study (p-value < 0.05), and their previous training programs (p-value < 0.05). Some recommendations were suggested in relation to EFL student attitudes.

Selections from three of the four main lines of collecting Japanese folk literature in Japan are reviewed. Four volumes are by Mizusawa Ken'ichi, the foremost collector: Robata no tonto mukashi, Ojiya no mukashibanashi (1971); Mukashi attatte, Aramachi no mukashibanashi (1969); Miruna no hanazashiki, Haha to ko no mukashibanashi (1969); and Mukashibanashi nōto Saishū to kenkyū (1969). Mizusawa collects talcs in Niigata. The last mentioned book gathers together his reports, articles, and notes published between 1958 and 1969. He records in dialect with standard Japanese in parallel where necessary, preserving the musical flow of the tale. The next three volumes are in the Mukashibanashi kenkyū shiryō sōsho series published by a committee of university men: Daisen hokuroku no mukashibanashi (1970), Sado kininaka no mukashibanashi (1970), and Kogane no uma (1971). The first follows the format of the series, including recordings by narrators on 33⅓ rpm discs. Mukashibanashi wa ikite iru by Inada Koji, a member of the series committee, gives a hopeful view of the survival of folk tales. Hagino Saihei mukashibanshi shū (1970), a collection by Nomura Jun'ichi of Kokugakuin University and Nomura Keiko is a one-narrator volume showing the folk tale rooted in family legends

English morphology is said to be one of the most difficult subjects of linguistic study Thai students can acquire. The present study aims at examining Thai learners of English with different levels of English language proficiency in terms of their 1) morphological knowledge and 2) morphological processing behaviors. Two experiments were designed to test 200 participants from Mae Fah Luang University. The results showed that students with low language proficiency (LL group) have less morphological knowledge than those with intermediate language proficiency (IL group). However, those in the IL group still show some evidence of morphological difficulty, though they have better skills in English. For morphological processing behavior, it was found that, with less knowledge, participants in the LL group employ a one-by-one word matching technique rather than chunking a package of information as do those in the IL group. Accordingly, unlike those in the IL group, students in the LL group could not generate well-organized outputs.
