Abstract Objectives Little is known about the nutritional status of elderly in Nepal, in particular among indigenous communities in high altitude areas. The main objective of this study was therefore to determine the nutritional status of elderly and their household food security status on the Nepal-China border. Methods The study was conducted in Mugu Karmarong rural municipality, as part of Mugu district that habitats mostly indigenous Tibetan-speaking communities. We used a descriptive cross-sectional design and a total of 128 participants were identified using purposive sampling. Anthropometry and the Mini Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF) were used to determine nutritional status and the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS) was used to categorize households according to a food insecurity scale. Results The mean (range) age of participants was 69 (60–84) years. The majority (81%) of the 128 participants had no any education, they were mostly (86%) Buddhist and 72% were married. Based on the MNA-SF scores, 30.5% had a normal nutritional status, 40.6% were at risk for malnutrition while 28.9% were malnourished. In somewhat contrast, our BMI measurements (using the cut-off values from a national survey) suggested that the majority (79.7%) had BMI values within the normal reference range. Based on the HFIAS, only 30.4% of the households were scored as food secure whereas 29% of the households belonged to the severe food insecurity category followed by 26% being moderately food insecure and 11% being mildly food insecure. Our findings revealed that type of the household, use of iodized salt, seasonal migration and household food security status, were all significantly associated with nutritional status of the elderly. Those living in severely food insecure households were 3.2 times more likely to be malnourished than those from food secured households while those living in moderately insecure household was 1.8 times more at risk of malnutrition than those from food secure households. Conclusions We found that about 2/3 of the elderly were either at risk of malnutrition or were malnourished. Only 1/3 of the surveyed households were food secure. Hence, there are alarming risks of malnutrition and food insecurity among elderly in this remote, mountainous region. Funding Sources This study was partly sponsored by the University of Oslo.

Aim: To evaluate and compare household food security situations in the rural area of a Brazilian city by three different methods: Availability of food energy at home, nutritional status and Perceptionof food insecurity. Methods: Cross-sectional study of 79 families living in 19 rural communities in a small city in Minas Gerais, Brazil, including a total of 272 residents. Families were selected by drawing lots, respecting the proportionality of families per community. The inclusion criteria included living in rural areas, inhabiting a selected household, and using food products available for consumption, by purchase and production. During family visits, nutritional status was analyzed by anthropometry, the perception of food insecurity by Food Insecurity Scale (EBIA) and availability of food energy at household for 30 days. Results: Of the 79 families of family farmers, 12.7% were considered to be unsafe for availability of food energy at household, 24.0% due to the presence of low weight at the household and 49.5% by EBIA. There was a low correlation among the methods, with differences between them (Kendall W 0.162 p <0.001). Food insecurity was associated to the presence of at least one individual aged less than 18 years old in the household. Food security classified according to EBIA was associated with an increase in the number of people living in the household, the production of vegetables and fruits. Conclusions: No single indicator can coverseveral dimensions of food security. Food Security involves a broad and multifaceted approach; therefore, its thorough evaluation requires different classification methods.

AbstractObjective:To determine associations between household food security status and risk of Cu toxicity.Design:A population-level cross-sectional study to determine adult household food security status and its relationship with serum total Cu concentration (serum Cu) using multivariable regression models.Setting:Adult participants in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011–2014.Participants:The NHANES phlebotomy data, a nationally representative sample (n 2780; 1360 men and 1420 women), were analysed. Results:A significantly greater proportion of food-insecure persons had serum Cu that was above the upper value of the normal range (clinical cut-off) compared with their food-secure counterparts. In men, food insecurity (OR = 2·24, P < 0·001) and marginal food security (OR = 1·79, P < 0·001), and in women, marginal food security (OR = 1·82, P = 0·016), associated with greater likelihood to have serum Cu that was above the upper value of the normal range. Food insecurity was significantly associated with greater likelihood (OR = 1·65, P = 0·020) to have serum Cu that was within the upper quartile (≥75th centile).Conclusions:Food-insecure persons associate with higher serum Cu concentration and are at greater risk of Cu toxicity. There is need to study the sources of Cu in general, and specifically in food-insecure persons, to facilitate reduction of Cu exposure. Examining Cu contents of the food and water supplies could explicate any relationships to food insecurity and Cu intake.

The prevalence of underweight in 2010 to 2013 has increased percentage by 17.9% to 19.6%. Household food security and food intake were factors that can affect nutritional status of children. The aim of the study was to analize the relationship between status of household food security, energy and fat intake with nutrititional status of children. This was a cross sectional study with 40 samples selected using simple random sampling technique. Subject in this study was the fisherman family whose toddlers age 25-60 months. The data were collected by interview using questionaires, and were analyzed using linier regression and spearmen test. The result showed that 55% of households were facing food insecurity and 45% households were food insecure with severe hunger. Nutritional status of children (72,5%) were normal and (27,50%) wereunderweight. Energy intake has a significant relationship with nutritional status of children (p = 0,007) and fat (p=0,03).

Background: Food security refers to accessing to desirable, nutritious, and healthy foods to live a healthy and productive life. Household food insecurity is an underlying cause of malnutrition in children. In this study, the household food security and its influence on the nutritional status of under-five year children were investigated. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted from August to November 2019 in Syangja district of Nepal. Of six rural municipalities of the district, Phedikhola Rural Municipality was selected using the lottery method. We found 905 eligible households that have an under-five year child. A total of 289 children entered the study after considering the 40% overall prevalence rate of malnutrition among children under five years of age. Data were collected proportionately from each ward considering the health status and anthropometric measurements of children and household food security using a structured interview schedule and the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were applied to assess the situation and determine the association. Results: Food insecurity was observed in more than half (52.3%) of the households. Food insecurity was associated (P < 0.001) with the socioeconomic status of the family. Prevalence of stunting (height-for-age), underweight, and wasting (weight-for-height) in children were 28.7%, 20.0%, and 13.9%, respectively. Food security, exclusive breastfeeding, and initiation time of complementary feeding were significantly associated with wasting and underweight (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Food insecurity and under-five year malnutrition were highly frequent in the study areas. The improvement of educational, occupational, and economic conditions of the households may be a solution to this problem.

Measuring household food insecurity represents a challenge due to the complexity and wide array of factors associated with this phenomenon. For over one decade, researchers and agencies throughout the world have been using and assessing the validity of variations of the United States Department of Agriculture Household Food Security Supplemental Module. Thanks to numerous studies of diverse design, size, and purpose, the Household Food Security Supplemental Module has shown its suitability to directly evaluate the perceptions of individuals on their food security status. In addition, challenges and limitations are becoming clearer and new research questions are emerging as the process advances. The purpose of this article is to describe the development, validation procedures, and use of the Household Food Security Supplemental Module in very diverse settings. The most common Household Food Security Supplemental Module related studies have been conducted using criterion validity, Rasch modeling and Cronbach-Alpha Coefficient. It is critical that researchers, policy makers, governmental and non-governmental agencies intensify their efforts to further develop tools that provide valid and reliable measures of food security in diverse population groups. Additional work is needed to synthesize a universally applicable tool able to capture the global human phenomenon of food insecurity.

AbstractObjectiveThe present study was designed to determine household food security status and factors associated with food insecurity among high-school students in Esfahan, Iran.DesignCross-sectional surveys.SettingThe present study was conducted in autumn 2008 in Esfahan, Iran. The samples were selected using systematic cluster sampling. Socio-economic questionnaires, food security questionnaires and FFQ were filled out during face-to-face interviews. In addition, data on participants’ weights and heights were collected.SubjectsA total of 580 students (261 boys and 319 girls) aged 14–17 years from forty high schools in Esfahan, Iran, were selected.ResultsThe prevalence of household food insecurity according to the US Department of Agriculture food security questionnaire was 36·6 % (95 % CI 0·33, 0·40). Food insecurity was positively associated with number of members in the household (P < 0·05) and negatively associated with parental education level and job status and household economic status (P < 0·05). Moreover, students living in food-insecure households more frequently consumed bread, macaroni, potato and egg (P < 0·05), while they less frequently consumed rice, red meat, sausage and hamburger, poultry, fish, green vegetables, root and bulb (coloured) vegetables, melons, apples and oranges, milk and yoghurt (P < 0·05).ConclusionsFood insecurity was prevalent among households in Esfahan, Iran, and food security status was associated with socio-economic factors. Students who belonged to food-secure households more frequently consumed healthy foods (except sausage and hamburger), whereas those living in food-insecure households more frequently consumed cheap foods containing high energy per kilogram. The present study suggests that intervention programmes be designed and carried out.
