Background.Today, more than one billion people globally suffer from poverty and food insecurity. This study aimed to determine the severity of and factors related to household food insecurity in Zahedan, Southeastern Iran.Methods.This cross-sectional study was conducted on a total of 2,160 households between November 2014 and December 2015. Demographic and socioeconomic data were collected through interviewing the household mothers. Household food security status was assessed through the USDA 18-item questionnaire. The data were analyzed using chi-square test, one-way ANOVA, and logistic regression model.Results.Total food insecurity in the households investigated was 58.8%. There were significant associations (P<0.001) between household food insecurity status and the socioeconomic status of the households, ethnicity, education, age, and employment status of the head of the household and the mother of the household.Discussion.The results showed that more than half of the households examined suffer from food insecurity. Interventions to improve the food security status of people should be designed and implemented to improve people’s knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to healthy eating and food preparation. People’s access to healthy foods and knowledge of how to select healthy foods (especially on a limited budget) should also be improved.

Objectives: To determine household food insecurity and dietary diversity (DD) among seniors in Lubbock, Texas and examine the relationships between food security status and DD. Design: Cross-sectional study design. Setting: Lubbock, Texas. Participants: 200 seniors (≥ 50 years) randomly selected from seven senior centers and Meals on Wheels. Measurements: Socio-demographic and economic questionnaire, the validated Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS) for food security and coping strategies, the validated DD scale for measuring the minimum DD for women (MDD-W), and weight and height measurements. P<0.05 considered significant was used for all statistical analyses. Results: The majority of the respondents (59.8%) were categorized as food secure. No significant relationships were observed between DD and HFIAS. The linear regression analysis carried out on the socio-demographic predictors of food security showed that age, household income and money spent on food per month were predictors of food security (R2= 0.233; p<0.000; SEE=4.462). The number of people in the household was the only predictor for DD score (R2= 0.028; p<0.000; SEE=1.929). Conclusions: This study showed a serious problem of household food insecurity among seniors in Lubbock, Texas affecting 40% of seniors. The results provide some of the first insights into seniors’ food security status and DD. No relationship could be established between food security status and DD in this study. Only household size was a predictor for DD in this study and further research is needed to determine quantity of dietary intakes and factors influencing the dietary patterns.

Abstract Objective: The objectives of this study were to document feeding practices amongst rural Senegalese children aged 6 to 23 months, and to investigate psychosocial and environmental factors associated with the provision of iron-rich foods (IRF). Design: This was a cross-sectional study conducted from January through July 2018. Participants: Ninety-eight mothers of children aged 6-23 months. Setting: The study took place in the region of Matam, northern Senegal. Results: Results show that 27.6% of children were fed according to the minimum acceptable diet, and respectively, 55.1% and 53.1% had the minimum diet diversity and minimum meal frequency. About 65.3% of mothers provided IRF to young children the day before the survey, mostly fish. Mother‘s intention to provide IRF to their children was not associated with the provision of these foods neither was the perceived behavioural control. Child’s age (OR = 1.14, 95% CI = 1.03 - 1.26, p = 0.012) and household food insecurity score (OR = 0.80, 95% CI = 0.68 - 0.96, p = 0.014) were the predictors of the provision of IRF to children aged 6-23 months. Conclusions: Household food insecurity status and age of the child rather than mothers’ psychosocial factors were significant predictors of IRF consumption amongst children aged 6-23 months in the study area. More attention should be given to food environment and child-related factors in order to improve children feeding practices and, in particular, their consumption of IRF in the study setting. For instance, home visits and the 5-month-old vaccine consultation in health centers might be opportunities to reinforce the importance of providing IRF as part of complementary foods from the age of 6 months. Implementation of measures for the improvement of socioeconomic conditions and food security of households would also be valuable.

Abstract Objectives We tested whether participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) moderated the relation between household food security status and HbA1c, the gold standard measure of glycemic control, among Cambodian Americans with depression enrolled in a diabetes prevention trial. Methods Participants had elevated risk factors for type 2 diabetes and elevated depressive symptoms; recruits were excluded for extant diabetes. Community health workers assessed household food security status and SNAP participation via in-person interview. HbA1c levels from venous blood samples were ascertained using direct enzymatic assay. Results Among respondents (n = 189), 19% were food insecure, 41% received SNAP benefits, and mean HbA1c = 5.5%. There was a significant interaction between SNAP and food insecurity. HbA1c was highest among participants without SNAP who were food insecure. Simple effects analysis revealed a significant difference within the no SNAP group [Mean (SD) HbA1c: Secure = 5.38 (0.38), Insecure = 5.78 (0.36)] and no difference within the SNAP group [Secure = 5.61(0.44), Insecure = 5.61(0.55)]. Differences remained significant after controlling for demographic, socioeconomic, and clinical indicators. Unbalanced levels adequacy of energy and protein possibility can cause nutritional problems in children. While the status of household food security has an impact on the household ability to access a good food. Objectives: aims of this study are to analyze the relationship between nutritional adequacy level and household food security status with nutritional status of children aged 6-8 years. Method: This study used cross sectional design with sample of 62 families with children aged 6-8 years enrolled in SDN 1 and 2 Sambirejo. Anthropometric measurement of height and weight is used to determine the nutritional status of children. The instruments used 2x24-hours food recall form (energy and protein adequacy level), and US-HFSSM (household food security status). While the statistical test used is spearman correlation test. Results: The results showed a correlation between levels of energy (p=0.000) and protein (p=0.000) adequacy and household food security status (p=0.010) with child nutritional status. Conclusion: Households with food insecurity had a higher proportion of nutritional problem than food secure family, so it is needed to children for having supplemental food, especially them who have nutritional problems and on food insecurity condition. It is intended to provide children with additional nutritious food to reduce the risk of nutritional problems.ABSTRAK Latar Belakang: Status gizi anak sekolah dasar dapat dipengaruhi oleh banyak faktor diantaranya tingkat kecukupan energi dan protein serta status ketahanan pangan rumah tangga. Status ketahanan pangan rumah tangga berdampak kepada kemampuan dalam mengakses pangan yang baik.Tujuan: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis hubungan antara tingkat kecukupan energi dan protein serta status ketahanan pangan rumah tangga dengan status gizi anak usia 6-8 tahun.Metode: Penelitian ini menggunakan desain cross sectional dengan sampel sebanyak 62 keluarga yang memiliki anak usia 6-8 tahun yang terdaftar di SDN 1 dan 2 Sambirejo. Pengukuran antropometri tinggi badan dan berat badan digunakan untuk mengetahui status gizi anak. Hal tersebut dimaksudkan untuk memberikan anak tambahan makanan yang bergizi agar menurunkan risiko masalah gizi.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the association of food insecurity score with the status of Covid-19 infection. Design: An online cross-sectional study. Demographic and socio-economic information were collected by questionnaire. Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS) was used in assessing household food security status. The analysis data was done by IBM SPSS 22.0, using Chi-square test, ANOVA test and Multinomial logistic regression model. Setting: Iran Participants: 2871 Iranian adults (over 18 years old) Results: findings indicated that men [OR=0.60, CI= (0.41, 0.87), P<0.05], and healthcare personnel [OR=3.66, CI= (1.90, 7.05), P<0.001] were at higher risk for Covid-19. It was also shown that the food insecurity score is significantly higher among infected people compared to not-infected [OR=1.03, CI= (1.00, 1.05), P<0.05]. The comparison between suspected and not-infected individuals only indicated the significant differences in perceived COVID-19 prevention score, which was higher among not-infected people [OR=0.88, CI=(0.84,0.93), P<0.001]. Conclusion: Based on the results, in addition to long-term policies to improve food security, policymakers and planners need to plan and implement short-term policies (financial or food assistance) to reduce society vulnerability to the Covid-19.

Indonesia still faces a challenge in achieving an appropriate complementary feeding (CF) practice for the child aged 6 to 24 months. However, this condition became more critical due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease-2019) outbreak. The social limitation policy, market disruption, and changes in income may change the state of family food security and altering child CF practices. Besides, infant age, mother education and occupation, information availability, and CF knowledge may also affect the practice. Therefore, we aimed to explore the CF practice and its related factors during the COVID-19 outbreak through an online cross-sectional study of the mothers of children aged 6 to 24 months in Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. The results showed that a child’s age ( P = .019), household food security ( P = .006), and mother’s CF knowledge ( P = .002) had an association with CF practices. We concluded that a child’s age, household food security, and mother’s CF knowledge are the determinant factors for appropriate CF practices during the outbreak.

Abstract Objectives Little is known about the nutritional status of elderly in Nepal, in particular among indigenous communities in high altitude areas. The main objective of this study was therefore to determine the nutritional status of elderly and their household food security status on the Nepal-China border. Methods The study was conducted in Mugu Karmarong rural municipality, as part of Mugu district that habitats mostly indigenous Tibetan-speaking communities. We used a descriptive cross-sectional design and a total of 128 participants were identified using purposive sampling. Anthropometry and the Mini Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF) were used to determine nutritional status and the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS) was used to categorize households according to a food insecurity scale. Results The mean (range) age of participants was 69 (60–84) years. The majority (81%) of the 128 participants had no any education, they were mostly (86%) Buddhist and 72% were married. Based on the MNA-SF scores, 30.5% had a normal nutritional status, 40.6% were at risk for malnutrition while 28.9% were malnourished. In somewhat contrast, our BMI measurements (using the cut-off values from a national survey) suggested that the majority (79.7%) had BMI values within the normal reference range. Based on the HFIAS, only 30.4% of the households were scored as food secure whereas 29% of the households belonged to the severe food insecurity category followed by 26% being moderately food insecure and 11% being mildly food insecure. Our findings revealed that type of the household, use of iodized salt, seasonal migration and household food security status, were all significantly associated with nutritional status of the elderly. Those living in severely food insecure households were 3.2 times more likely to be malnourished than those from food secured households while those living in moderately insecure household was 1.8 times more at risk of malnutrition than those from food secure households. Conclusions We found that about 2/3 of the elderly were either at risk of malnutrition or were malnourished. Only 1/3 of the surveyed households were food secure. Hence, there are alarming risks of malnutrition and food insecurity among elderly in this remote, mountainous region. Funding Sources This study was partly sponsored by the University of Oslo.

This study sought to describe the changes in the food security status in Brazil before and during its most recent financial and political crisis, as well as to explore associations between food security and socioeconomic factors during the crisis. This cross-sectional study analyzed data from two different sources: the Brazilian National Household Sample Survey for 2004 (n = 112,479), 2009 (n = 120,910), and 2013 (n = 116,192); and the Gallup World Poll for 2015 (n = 1,004), 2016 (n = 1,002), and 2017 (n = 1,001). Household food security status was measured by a shorter version of the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale, consisting of the first 8 questions of the original 14-item scale. Descriptive and logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the changes in food security and their association with socioeconomic factors. Results suggest that during the crisis the percentage of households classified as food secure declined by one third (76% in 2013 to 49% in 2017) while severe food insecurity tripled (4% in 2013 to 12% in 2017). Whereas before the crisis (2013) 44% of the poorest households were food secure, by 2017 this decreased to 26%. Household income per capita was strongly associated with food security, increasing by six times the chances of being food insecure among the poorest strata. Those who reported a low job climate, social support or level of education were twice as likely to be food insecure. Despite significant improvements between 2004 and 2013, findings indicate that during the crisis Brazil suffered from a great deterioration of food security, highlighting the need for emergency policies to protect and guarantee access to food for the most vulnerable.
