Background: Cigarette smoking is a public health issue that may influence the physical properties of dental composites. Surface roughness is one of the physical properties of restorative materials potentially influencing their success. The use of nanofilled and nanohybrid composites in dentistry has increased substantially over the past few years. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the surface roughness of nanofilled and nanohybrid composite resins exposed to kretek cigarette smoke. Methods: Twelve cylindrical specimens of each material were prepared and divided into two groups (n=6). In the control groups, the specimens were immersed in distilled water for 24 hours at 37°C, with the water being renewed daily. For the experimental groups, the specimens were exposed to kretek cigarette smoke on a daily basis, then washed and soaked in distilled water at 37°C. After 21 days, the specimens were measured using a Surface Roughness Tester and the data was then statistically analyzed. Results: An Independent-T Test revealed that there were statistically significant differences in the surface roughness between the control and experimental groups of both nanofilled and nanohybrid composites, as well as between the nanofilled experimental group and the nanohybrid experimental group. Conclusion: Exposure to kretek cigarette smoke can increase the surface roughness of nanohybrid composites to a significantly greater extent than nanofilled composites.

Aim: In recent years, tooth-colored, dual-cure, bulk-fill composite resins, which have attracted attention for their ease of use, constitute one of the latest developments in pediatric dentistry applications. This study aimed to evaluate the color stability and surface roughness properties of three different dual-cure, bulk-fill materials and one light-cure, bulk-fill composite material used in pediatric dentistry. Methodology: In this study, three different dual-cure, bulk-fill composites (Fill-Up, HyperFIL, Cention-N) and one light-polymerized bulk-fill composite (Reveal HD) were used. A total of 70 samples were obtained for surface roughness testing. The surface roughness testing was performed with a Hysitron TI 950 Triboindenter device. A total of 105 samples were obtained for the evaluation of color stability. Cherry juice, iced tea, and distilled water were used as solutions. Initial and final color measurements were made using a spectrophotometer. The color differences between measurements were recorded according to the CIEDE 2000 system. Results: The least surface roughness among the composite groups was observed in the light polymerized Cention-N composite samples in the experimental group. In the Fill-Up and Cention-N composite groups in the experimental group, the surface roughness of the samples left to self-polymerization and the samples polymerized with light showed a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). Among the composite groups, the highest amount of coloring was observed in the Fill-Up composite samples, which were left to self-polymerization and kept in cherry juice in the experimental group. The least coloration among the composite groups was observed in the Cention-N composite samples polymerized with light and kept in distilled water. Conclusion: Based on this information, a decrease in surface roughness and an increase in color stability can be expected due to self-polymerization and the light polymerization of dual-cured, bulk-fill composites.   How to cite this article: Şivgan Güner Z, Bolgül B, İnandı T. Purpose: To investigate the effect of mebendazole on an in vivo solid tumor model of fibrosarcoma in hamsters.Methods: 24 Syrian golden hamsters of both sexes with the approximate body  weight of 100g were randomly distributed in 2 experimental and 2 control groups, with 6 animals in each group. BHK-21/C13 cells (2 x 106) in 1 mL Glasgow Minimum Essential Medium (GMEM) were injected subcutaneously into the back of each animal in 3 groups. The experimental groups were treated with mebendazole  (460 mg/kg) via a gastric tube on a daily basis, immediately after tumor inoculation. In addition, one experimental group received deoxycholic acid 20 mg/kg once a day. After 2 weeks, when the tumors were approximately 1 - 2 cm in the control group, all the animals were sacrificed, and their blood collected for laboratory analysis. The tumors were excised, their weight and diameters measured, and the volumes  calculated. The tumor samples were histopathologically assessed and the main organs toxicologically analyzed. Images were taken and processed by an imaging software, and Ki-67-positive cells in the tumor samples were quantified.Results: Mebendazole diminished tumor mitosis from 18.5 ± 3.02 to 13.5 ± 3.45 (p < 0.05), vasculature and tissue penetration, and increased necroses in tumor  slices. Tumor volume and weight were insignificantly attenuated. Toxicity was not observed.Conclusion: Mebendazole might be an effective non-toxic agent in sarcoma therapy.Keywords: Mebendazole, Hamsters, BHK-21/C13 cells, Fibrosarcoma therapy,  Tumor mitosis

SUMMARY The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different polishing systems on the surface roughness of different nanocomposite resins using various analysis methods. Three types of nanocomposite resins were investigated in this study: supra-nanohybrid (Estelite Asteria), nanohybrid (GrandioSo), and nanoceramic composite resins (Ceram-X Spheretec One). Forty-eight disc-shaped specimens (4 mm in diameter, 2 mm in thickness) were fabricated using a Teflon mold and divided into four groups according to the different polishing systems (n=12). All specimens were processed with one of the following methods: Mylar strip (control), one-step polishers (Opti1step), two-step polishers (Clearfil TwistDia), or multistep polishers (Sof-Lex XT Pop-on). The surface roughness (Ra, μm) was measured by contact profilometry (Mahr, Marsurf PS1) (n=10) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Phenom XL) at 400× magnification (n=2). The data were statistically analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Bonferroni correction tests (p&lt;0.05). In addition, the surface morphology and elemental content were examined by SEM and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analyses. Under SEM evaluation, in terms of the polishing systems, there were no significant differences in the surface roughness for supra-nanohybrid composite resin (p&gt;0.05). The multistep polishers created lower surface roughness than the one-step polishers for nanohybrid and nanoceramic composites. In terms of the composite resins, supra-nanohybrid composite exhibited lower surface roughness than nanohybrid composite for all polishing systems (p&lt;0.05). The SEM observations confirmed the surface roughness measurements related to the surface morphology. One-step and two-step polishers created porosity on the surface of nanohybrid and nanoceramic composites. EDS analysis indicated the elemental composition of the particles in the porous zones was quite close to diamond abrasives and glass fillers.

ABSTRACT Aim of the study To determine the solubility of nanohybrid (NH) composite resins when immersed in saliva substitute and distilled water. Materials and methods A total of 60 disc-shaped samples (n = 30) were prepared in teflon molds of diameter 10 mm × 2 mm thickness from two NH composite resins. They were light-cured following which the samples were removed and weighed three times using a digital balance. Samples were then immersed in test solutions, i.e., 100 mL of distilled water and saliva substitute each stored for 24 hours and 7, 14, 21, and 28 days in an incubator at 37°C at 100% humidity. At the time intervals mentioned, the samples were removed from the incubator, washed with distilled water, blotted dry, and weighed. Samples were again immersed in fresh test solutions. Difference in preweight and postweight of samples was calculated and data were analyzed using appropriate test by testing normality. A p-value < 0.05 was considered to be significant. Results The results were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). As observed from the baseline weight to the 28th day weight, there was a loss of weight of the samples in all the groups except NH composite resin (Flash) in distilled water. Conclusion From the results of the study, it was observed that there was no statistically significant difference in weight, with respect to the solubility of the two NH composite resins and the two solutions tested. Clinical significance of the study is that the NH composite resin that shows lesser solubility can be the choice for an esthetic restorative material in patients for long-term results. The experiment tested the hypothesis that adrenalectomized rats can discriminate, as measured by preference, between equimolar NaCl and LiCl solutions on the basis of taste. An adrenalectomized experimental group was given long-term, two-bottle drinking tests with NaCl opposite distilled water, and later with LiCl opposite distilled water. In a subsequent series of brief two-bottle tests, the rats selected NaCl over LiCl more frequently and in greater quantities. Control groups lacking either prior experience with LiCl opposite distilled water or adrenalectomy failed to manifest the preference. Presumably, the experimental group acquired the ability to discriminate between the solutions in the preliminary long-term drinking tests in which there was ample opportunity for the rats to experience the differential postingestional effects of the compounds.

ABSTRACT Aim The aim was to compare the effect of 10 and 20% carbamide peroxide (CP) on microhardness (MHN) and surface roughness of two commercially available bulk fill composites (X-tra fill Bulk Fill and Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill). Materials and methods A total of 50 specimens with both type composites were prepared using brass molds of inner diameter 10 mm and a height of 4 mm. Each type of composite was further divided into three groups, control group stored in artificial saliva for 14 days, other groups bleached with 10 and 20% CP respectively, for 14 days. Microhardness of the composite resin was tested with a Vickers hardness tester, whereas surface roughness was tested with profilometer. Results All the analysis was performed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 18. The value of p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Both 10 and 20% CP significantly reduced MHN of experimental composite resins. However, the mean surface roughness was significantly higher in X-tra fill Bulk Fill than Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill at 20% CP concentration. The mean MHN of Tetric EvoCeram was reduced when compared with X-tra fill at 20% CP. Conclusion There was a significant reduction in the MHN of restorative materials observed after exposure to CP under a clinically simulated bleaching regimen. However, increase in surface roughness was seen only at 20% CP. Clinical significance The physical properties, such as MHN and surface roughness have a crucial effect on the longevity of restorations and, moreover, on the esthetic demands of patients, but they may be compromised by bleaching treatments.
