Reactive NOx is one of the major air pollutants, which also plays a key role as greenhouse gas. Many research efforts have been devoted to not only detection of NOx in air but also abatement of NOx emission. The aim of this mini review is to provide a panoramic snapshot of the electrochemical analysis methods for the emission and detection of NOx in atmosphere, with special emphasis on NOx sensor. The electrochemical detecting mechanism and materials for fabricating electrochemical gas sensors are discussed and the prospects and challenges in this area are also evaluated. This work will serve as a useful source to inform the interested audience of the latest developments and applications in the field of NOx emission and electrochemical detection.

Previous researches often emphasize on the sources and effects of air pollutants in the environment and human population. A part of those studies were done in order to explore the spread or distribution pattern of those pollutants, especially regarding the emission from industrial steam boilers. It is very important to evaluate the transfer trend of air pollutants at both local and global scales. In this study, Industrial Source Complex Short Term Version 3 (ISCST3) model has been used to predict the distribution of NOx emitted from industrial steam boilers in the District of Hulu Langat, Selangor. The result of analyses indicates that the emission rates for steam boilers were ranging from 0.0083 kg NOx/hour to as high as 0.2771 kg NOx/hour while the total emission load was 1.9969 kg NOx/hour. The evaluation on dispersion contour shows that the concentration of NOx was higher in 1-hour reading than 24-hour value. The highest concentration of NOx was predicted to be within 104.65 km2 from the sources of NOx (steam boilers).

Local air pollutants (LAPs), such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, sulfur oxide, nitrogen oxide, ozone, and particulate matter, as well as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the transport sector are rapidly increasing in the People’s Republic of China. Various measures to control LAPs have been implemented in the country, along with the adoption of strategies to mitigate GHG emissions. The connection between LAP and GHG emission control and reduction offers an opportunity to address both problems simultaneously. This paper presents a methodology that measures the benefits of co-control evaluation on mitigating LAP and GHG emissions. It highlights the methodology’s potential to help maximize measures and strategies that have significant co-control effects.

In this study, we synthesized heterostructured zinc stannate/tin oxide microparticles (ZTO/TO MPs) by a simple coprecipitation method and used them as an effective electrode material for the electrochemical detection of the antibacterial drug secnidazole (SCZ). The as-prepared ZTO/TO MPs were characterized by XRD, Raman, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, EDX, and XPS analyses. The physiochemical studies clearly proved that the fabricated ZTO/TO MPs were formed in a heterostructure phase without other impurities. A glassy carbon electrode modified with the synthesized ZTO/TO MPs showed an excellent and improved electrocatalytic activity in the electrochemical reduction of SCZ. Using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), an impressive linear calibration range, extending from 0.01 to 193 μM, was observed, coupled with a detection limit of 0.0054 μM and a sensitivity of 0.055 μA/μM. In addition, the ZTO/TO MPs/GCE showed very good selectivity for the detection of SCZ in the presence of a number of biological, inorganic, and structurally related compounds. Finally, the ZTO/TO MPs/GCE was investigated for the analysis of SCZ in human blood serum samples. A very good recovery was obtained when spiking the blood serum with SCZ, highlighting the good applicability of the ZTO/TO MPs/GCE for the electrochemical analysis of SCZ in complex biological samples.
