Novel thiadiazole derivatives of Schiff bases namely (E)-N-(anthracen-9-ylmethylene)-5-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-amine (A9CNPTDA) and N-(anthracen-9(10H)-ylidene)-5-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-amine (ANNPTDA) were synthesized, characterized and corrosion inhibition behaviour, as well as the mechanism of inhibition were investigated by different monitoring techniques like gravimetric measurements, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization, quantum chemical and SEM studies. Both of the thiadiazole derivatives showed excellent corrosion inhibitor action on carbon Steel in acid medium. A9CNPTDA exhibited highest inhibition efficiency of 98.04% at 1mM concentration while ANNPTDA showed a maximum of 95.32%. In HCl medium, both derivatives obeyed Langmuir adsorption isotherm and thermodynamic parameters (Kads, ΔG0ads) were calculated. An acceptable relationship was observed between the results of quantum chemical calculations and other corrosion monitoring analysis.

In this paper, a corrosion inhibitor containing nitrogen atoms and a conjugated π bond was synthesised, and its final product synthesised by the optimal conditions of the orthogonal test results is named multi-mannich base (MBT). The corrosion inhibition effect on the N80 steel sheet of the corrosion inhibitor was evaluated in a CO2 saturated solution containing 3 wt % NaCl; the corrosion rate was 0.0446 mm/a and the corrosion inhibition rate was 90.4%. Through electrochemical and adsorption theory study, MBT is a mixed corrosion inhibitor that mainly shows cathode suppression capacity. The adsorption of MBT on the surface of the steel sheet follows the Langmuir adsorption isotherm; it can be spontaneously adsorbed on the surface of the N80 steel sheet, which has a good corrosion inhibition effect. The surface of the N80 steel sheet was microscopically characterised by atomic force microscope (AFM). It can be seen from the results that the N80 steel sheet with MBT added is significantly different from the blank control group; the surface of the steel sheet is relatively smooth, indicating that MBT forms an effective protective film on the surface of N80 steel, which inhibits the steel sheet.

Acidization is an oil reservoir stimulation technique for increasing oil well productivity. Hydrochloric acid is used in oil and gas production to stimulate the formation. The acid treatment occurs through N80 steel tubes. The process requires a high degree of corrosion inhibition of tubing material (N80 steel). In the present investigation effect of synthesized amino acid compounds, namely, acetamidoleucine (AAL) and benzamidoleucine (BAL) as corrosion inhibitors for N80 steel in 15% HCl solution was studied by polarization, AC impedance (EIS), and weight loss measurements. It was found that both the inhibitors were effective inhibitors and their inhibition efficiency was significantly increased with increasing concentration of inhibitors. Polarization curves revealed that the studied inhibitors represent mixed type inhibitors. AC impedance studies revealed that charge transfer resistance increases and double layer capacitance decreases in presence of inhibitors. Adsorption of inhibitors at the surface of N80 steel was found to obey Langmuir isotherm.

PurposeThis paper aims to analyze the corrosion and corrosion inhibition of N80 in 10 per cent HCl + 8 per cent fluoroboric acid (HBF4) solution for acidizing operation.Design/methodology/approachThe corrosion rate, kinetic parameters (Ea, A) and thermodynamic parameters (ΔH, ΔS) of N80 steel in fresh acid and spent acid, 10 per cent HCl + 8 per cent HBF4, 10 per cent HCl and 8 per cent HBF4solutions were calculated through immersion tests. The corrosion and inhibition properties were studied through X-ray diffraction and electrochemical measurements. The corrosion morphology of the corrosion product was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).FindingsThe results demonstrated that the spent acid was the main cause of acidification corrosion, and the HBF4would cause serious corrosion to N80 steel. The results showed that the N80 steel was more seriously corroded in the spent acid than in fresh acid, and the hydrolysis of HBF4accelerates the dissolution process of N80 steel anode to control the corrosion reaction. The results showed that the acidification will definitely cause serious corrosion to the oil tube; therefore, necessary anti-corrosion measures must be taken in the acidification process.Originality/valueThe results showed that acidizing the formation with 10 per cent HCl + 8 per cent HBF4will definitely cause serious corrosion to the oil tube, especially when the spent acid flows back. Therefore, necessary anti-corrosion measures must be taken in the acidification process, especially in the spent acid flowback stage.
