Abstract Ti-6Al-4V (TC4) alloy has been widely used for implants, and excellent surface quality is required for satisfactory performance. In this study, chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) was introduced to process TC4 alloy. H2O2 and K+ were used to enhance the CMP efficiency. It is revealed that, at pH 10, the material removal rate (MRR) of TC4 alloy increases with the increasing H2O2. A synergistic action between H2O2 and K+ exists under alkaline conditions. With H2O2 and at pH 10, as the K+ concentration increases, the MRR of TC4 alloy first increases and then levels off. The anions have little influence on the CMP performance. After polishing, the surface is smooth without scratches, and the substrate underneath the surface film has no processing damage. For the synergistic action, K+ ions are adsorbed on the Stern layer of the TC4 alloy surface and the silica particles, screening the surface negative charge. Firstly, OOH- produced from H2O2 and OH- can approach the TC4 alloy surface easily, promoting the corrosion. Secondly, more silica particles come into contact with the TC4 alloy surface, enhancing the interactions. Therefore, the MRR increases. The research work brings about a promising high-efficiency CMP process for titanium alloys.

Hypertrophic scars or keloid form as part of the wound healing reaction process, and its formation mechanism is complex and diverse, involving multi-stage synergistic action of multiple cells and factors. Adipose stem cells (ASCs) have become an emerging approach for the treatment of many diseases, including hypertrophic scarring or keloid, owing to their various advantages and potential. Herein, we analyzed the molecular mechanism of hypertrophic scar or keloid formation and explored the role and prospects of stem cell therapy, in the treatment of this condition.

Since 2019, the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has caused a huge chaos throughout the world and the major threat has been possessed by the immune-compromised individuals involving the cancer patients; their weakened immune response makes them vulnerable and susceptible to the virus. The oncologists as well as their patients are facing many problems for their treatment sessions as they need to postpone their surgery, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy. The approach that could be adopted especially for the cancer patients is the amalgamation of immunotherapy and nanotherapy which can reduce the burden on the healthcare at this peak time of the infection. There is also a need to predict or analyze the data of cancer patients who are at a severe risk of being exposed to an infection in order to reduce the mortality rate. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) could be incorporated where the real time data will be available to the physicians according to the different patient’s clinical characteristics and their past treatments. With this data, it will become easier for them to modify or replace the treatment to increase the efficacy against the infection. The combination of an immunotherapy and nanotherapy will be targeted to treat the cancer patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 and the AI will act as icing on the cake to monitor, predict and analyze the data of the patients to improve the treatment regime for the most vulnerable patients.

In this research, the influence of natural zeolites obtained from the volcanic ash of the Ubinas volcano has been studied as synergistic agents in a flame-retardant system (composed of ammonium polyphosphate, pentaerythritol, and polypropylene). Four zeolites were synthesized from volcanic ash, including those that had been calcined and those that had not. These were then placed in an alkaline solution at three synthesis temperatures. Zeolites were characterized through X-ray diffraction, specific surface area by nitrogen adsorption analysis (Brunauer–Emmett–Teller) and scanning electron microscopy. Polypropylene matrix composites were prepared with ammonium polyphosphate, pentaerythritol and zeolites at 1, 5 and 9%. Its thermal stability and fire resistance were evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis, limiting oxygen index, vertical burning test and cone calorimeter and its morphological structure by scanning electron microscopy. It was determined that the synthesis temperature and the use of calcined and without calcined volcanic ash have an influence on the characteristics of the zeolites and on its synergistic action.

The fluorane thermochromic microcapsules and waterborne acrylic resin microcapsules were added into waterborne coatings at the same time to prepare intelligent waterborne coating film with dual functions of color change and self-repairing. The coating film prepared by adding 15.0% fluorane microcapsules and 5.0% waterborne acrylic resin microcapsules to the primer at the same time had better comprehensive properties. At this time, the coating film changed from yellow to colorless. The repair rate of the coating film was 58.4%. When the temperature was lower than 32 °C, waterborne acrylic resin microcapsules can improve the thermochromic performance of the coating film with fluorane microcapsules. Waterborne acrylic resin microcapsules can alleviate the color change of coating film with fluorane microcapsules. The fluorane microcapsules can improve the self-repairing performance of coating film with waterborne acrylic resin microcapsules. The results lay a theoretical and technical foundation for multifunctional coating film.

Sex hormone steroidal drugs were reported to have modulating actions on the ion channel TRPM3. Pregnenolone sulphate (PS) presents the most potent known endogenous chemical agonist of TRPM3 and affects several gating modes of the channel. These includes a synergistic action of PS and high temperatures on channel opening and the PS-induced opening of a noncanonical pore in the presence of other TRPM3 modulators. Moreover, human TRPM3 variants associated with neurodevelopmental disease exhibit an increased sensitivity for PS. However, other steroidal sex hormones were reported to influence TRPM3 functions with activating or inhibiting capacity. Here, we aimed to answer how DHEAS, estradiol, progesterone and testosterone act on the various modes of TRPM3 function in the wild-type channel and two-channel variants associated with human disease. By means of calcium imaging and whole-cell patch clamp experiments, we revealed that all four drugs are weak TRPM3 agonists that share a common steroidal interaction site. Furthermore, they exhibit increased activity on TRPM3 at physiological temperatures and in channels that carry disease-associated mutations. Finally, all steroids are able to open the noncanonical pore in wild-type and DHEAS also in mutant TRPM3. Collectively, our data provide new valuable insights in TRPM3 gating, structure-function relationships and ligand sensitivity.

Abstract Zeolites and Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have frequently been considered as “competitors” for the development of new advanced separation processes. The production of high quality gasoline is currently achieved through the energy demanding conventional Total Isomerization Process (TIP) that separates pentane and hexane isomers while not reaching yet the ultimate goal of a Research Octane Number (RON) higher than 92. Herein we demonstrate how an unprecedented synergistic action of two complementary benchmark materials of each family of porous solids, a commercially available zeolite, 5A and the bio-derived Al-dicarboxylate MOF MIL-160(Al), leads to a novel adsorptive process for octane upgrading of gasoline through an efficient separation of pentane and hexane isomer mixtures into fractions of low and high research octane number (RON). This innovative mixed bed adsorbent strategy encompasses a thermodynamically-driven separation of hexane isomers according to the degree of branching by MIL-160(Al) coupled to a steric rejection of pentane and hexane linear isomers by the molecular sieve zeolite 5A. The adsorptive separation ability of this MOF/zeolite duo was further evaluated under industrial operating conditions by sorption breakthrough and continuous cyclic experiments with a mixed bed of shaped adsorbents. Remarkably, at the industrially relevant temperature of 423 K, an ideal sorption hierarchy of low RON over high RON alkanes is achieved, i.e., n-hexane >> n-pentane >> 2-methylpentane > 3-methylpentane >>> 2,3-dimethylbutane > isopentane ≈ 2,2-dimethylbutane, and an exceptional ideal productivity of 1.14 mol.dm-3 is attained for a final high RON isomers product of 92, which corresponds to a substantial leap-forward when compared with existing processes.
