A New Hybrid Method for Parameter Optimization of SVR

The performance of Support Vector Regression (SVR) depends heavily on its parameters, but some optimization methods based on Grid Search (GS) or evolutionary algorithms still have several issues that must be addressed. This paper proposes a new hybrid method (PSO-SS) that combines Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Scatter Search (SS) to optimize the parameters of the SVR. In PSO-SS, to improve the search capability of PSO and reduce the likelihood of the PSO becoming trapped in the local optimum, the initial PSO population is generated by the diversification generation method and the improvement method of SS, and the velocity updating formula of PSO is improved by adding diversity information. On the StatLib and UCI datasets, our experiments show that the PSO-SS method is an effective parameter optimization method compared with other methods. In addition, an SVR model with its parameters optimized by PSO-SS (PSO-SS-SVR) is used to predict the grain size of aluminum alloys. The experimental results show that the PSO-SS-SVR method outperforms Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN), PSO-SVR and the empirical model.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have shown potential in intelligent fault diagnosis of rotating machinery. However, traditional DNNs such as the back-propagation neural network are highly sensitive to the initial weights and easily fall into the local optimum, which restricts the feature learning capability and diagnostic performance. To overcome the above problems, a deep sparse filtering network (DSFN) constructed by stacked sparse filtering is developed in this paper and applied to fault diagnosis. The developed DSFN is pre-trained by sparse filtering in an unsupervised way. The back-propagation algorithm is employed to optimize the DSFN after pre-training. Then, the DSFN-based intelligent fault diagnosis method is validated using two experiments. The results show that pre-training with sparse filtering and fine-tuning can help the DSFN search for the optimal network parameters, and the DSFN can learn discriminative features adaptively from rotating machinery datasets. Compared with classical methods, the developed diagnostic method can diagnose rotating machinery faults with higher accuracy using fewer training samples.

Fatigue is an important factor affecting modern flight safety. It can easily lead to a decline in pilots’ operational ability, misjudgments, and flight illusions. Moreover, it can even trigger serious flight accidents. In this paper, a wearable wireless physiological device was used to obtain pilots’ electrocardiogram (ECG) data in a simulated flight experiment, and 1440 effective samples were determined. The Friedman test was adopted to select the characteristic indexes that reflect the fatigue state of the pilot from the time domain, frequency domain, and non-linear characteristics of the effective samples. Furthermore, the variation rules of the characteristic indexes were analyzed. Principal component analysis (PCA) was utilized to extract the features of the selected feature indexes, and the feature parameter set representing the fatigue state of the pilot was established. For the study on pilots’ fatigue state identification, the feature parameter set was used as the input of the learning vector quantization (LVQ) algorithm to train the pilots’ fatigue state identification model. Results show that the recognition accuracy of the LVQ model reached 81.94%, which is 12.84% and 9.02% higher than that of traditional back propagation neural network (BPNN) and support vector machine (SVM) model, respectively. The identification model based on the LVQ established in this paper is suitable for identifying pilots’ fatigue states. This is of great practical significance to reduce flight accidents caused by pilot fatigue, thus providing a theoretical foundation for pilot fatigue risk management and the development of intelligent aircraft autopilot systems.

In real industrial applications, bearings in pairs or even more are often mounted on the same shaft. So the collected vibration signal is actually a mixed signal from multiple bearings. In this study, a method based on Hybrid Kernel Function-Support Vector Regression (HKF–SVR) whose parameters are optimized by Krill Herd (KH) algorithm was introduced for bearing performance degradation prediction in this situation. First, multi-domain statistical features are extracted from the bearing vibration signals and then fused into sensitive features using Kernel Joint Approximate Diagonalization of Eigen-matrices (KJADE) algorithm which is developed recently by our group. Due to the nonlinear mapping capability of the kernel method and the blind source separation ability of the JADE algorithm, the KJADE could extract latent source features that accurately reflecting the performance degradation from the mixed vibration signal. Then, the between-class and within-class scatters (SS) of the health-stage data sample and the current monitored data sample is calculated as the performance degradation index. Second, the parameters of the HKF–SVR are optimized by the KH (Krill Herd) algorithm to obtain the optimal performance degradation prediction model. Finally, the performance degradation trend of the bearing is predicted using the optimized HKF–SVR. Compared with the traditional methods of Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN), Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) and traditional SVR, the results show that the proposed method has a better performance. The proposed method has a good application prospect in life prediction of coaxial bearings.

Rapid advances in information and communication technology have made ubiquitous computing and the Internet of Things popular and practicable. These applications create enormous volumes of data, which are available for analysis and classification as an aid to decision-making. Among the classification methods used to deal with big data, feature selection has proven particularly effective. One common approach involves searching through a subset of the features that are the most relevant to the topic or represent the most accurate description of the dataset. Unfortunately, searching through this kind of subset is a combinatorial problem that can be very time consuming. Meaheuristic algorithms are commonly used to facilitate the selection of features. The artificial fish swarm algorithm (AFSA) employs the intelligence underlying fish swarming behavior as a means to overcome optimization of combinatorial problems. AFSA has proven highly successful in a diversity of applications; however, there remain shortcomings, such as the likelihood of falling into a local optimum and a lack of multiplicity. This study proposes a modified AFSA (MAFSA) to improve feature selection and parameter optimization for support vector machine classifiers. Experiment results demonstrate the superiority of MAFSA in classification accuracy using subsets with fewer features for given UCI datasets, compared to the original FASA.

Image segmentation is of significance because it can provide objects that are the minimum analysis units for geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA). Most segmentation methods usually set parameters to identify geo-objects, and different parameter settings lead to different segmentation results; thus, parameter optimization is critical to obtain satisfactory segmentation results. Currently, many parameter optimization methods have been developed and successfully applied to the identification of single geo-objects. However, few studies have focused on the recognition of the union of different types of geo-objects (semantic geo-objects), such as a park. The recognition of semantic geo-objects is likely more crucial than that of single geo-objects because the former type of recognition is more correlated with the human perception. This paper proposes an approach to recognize semantic geo-objects. The key concept is that a single geo-object is the smallest component unit of a semantic geo-object, and semantic geo-objects are recognized by iteratively merging single geo-objects. Thus, the optimal scale of the semantic geo-objects is determined by iteratively recognizing the optimal scales of single geo-objects and using them as the initiation point of the reset scale parameter optimization interval. In this paper, we adopt the multiresolution segmentation (MRS) method to segment Gaofen-1 images and tested three scale parameter optimization methods to validate the proposed approach. The results show that the proposed approach can determine the scale parameters, which can produce semantic geo-objects.

Atherosclerotic plaque rupture is the most common mechanism responsible for a majority of sudden coronary deaths. The precursor lesion of plaque rupture is thought to be a thin cap fibroatheroma (TCFA), or “vulnerable plaque”. Virtual Histology-Intravascular Ultrasound (VH-IVUS) images are clinically available for visualising colour-coded coronary artery tissue. However, it has limitations in terms of providing clinically relevant information for identifying vulnerable plaque. The aim of this research is to improve the identification of TCFA using VH-IVUS images. To more accurately segment VH-IVUS images, a semi-supervised model is developed by means of hybrid K-means with Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) and a minimum Euclidean distance algorithm (KMPSO-mED). Another novelty of the proposed method is fusion of different geometric and informative texture features to capture the varying heterogeneity of plaque components and compute a discriminative index for TCFA plaque, while the existing research on TCFA detection has only focused on the geometric features. Three commonly used statistical texture features are extracted from VH-IVUS images: Local Binary Patterns (LBP), Grey Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM), and Modified Run Length (MRL). Geometric and texture features are concatenated in order to generate complex descriptors. Finally, Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN), kNN (K-Nearest Neighbour), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers are applied to select the best classifier for classifying plaque into TCFA and Non-TCFA. The present study proposes a fast and accurate computer-aided method for plaque type classification. The proposed method is applied to 588 VH-IVUS images obtained from 10 patients. The results prove the superiority of the proposed method, with accuracy rates of 98.61% for TCFA plaque.
