Improving the quality of health resort services through effective management is one of the key tools to increase their competitiveness, which increases the demand, ensures year-round occupancy and increases their financial results. An independent assessment of the management system in a health resort and the publication of the results build the trust of guests as well as authorities and investors, which contributes to attracting investment in the resort and its sustainable development. Purpose of the study. This study develops a methodology for managing changes in accordance with standardized international criteria to improve the results and ensure the development of a health resort. Materials and methods. An express self-assessment of the health resort's management system was carried out by means of a questionnaire, which reveals the development level according to the most effective approaches within each criterion of the global model EFQM 2020. These criteria emphasize consumer priorities, sustainable values, the satisfaction of stakeholder needs, and the environment. The approaches characterizing the health resort’s activity, help to estimate the level of its maturity in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. The results were used to plan improvements in the health resort's operations. In comparison with the results of past self-assessments, these results record the current state of the management system and demonstrate the levels of development and tendencies in work practices, showing possibilities for the development of the resort. To assess the activities of the health resort organization for each element of the model, four options for assessing the levels of maturity were selected. Conclusions. Express self-assessment gives a rapid assessment of the activities of health resorts based on the questionnaire and information supplied verbally. The results can be obtained within one day and can represent graphically the evaluation profile of the health resort. The method can be used in any health resort, regardless of its organization, ownership, or medical specialization. Indirectly, the methodology develops patient- and risk-oriented thinking among management, which forms a culture of quality and innovation in the health resort itself and in the professional community of organizations in order to contribute to the growth and prosperity of the spa industry in Russia as a whole. Improving the methodology of express self-assessment includes clarifying and adding statements to the questionnaire in relation to the best management practices of health resorts, new goals, objectives, and business technologies, as well as challenges at the regional and global levels.

This special issue provides an assessment of the contribution of soils to Nature's Contributions to People (NCP). Here, we combine this assessment and previously published relationships between NCP and delivery on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to infer contributions of soils to the SDGs. We show that in addition to contributing positively to the delivery of all NCP, soils also have a role in underpinning all SDGs. While highlighting the great potential of soils to contribute to sustainable development, it is recognized that poorly managed, degraded or polluted soils may contribute negatively to both NCP and SDGs. The positive contribution, however, cannot be taken for granted, and soils must be managed carefully to keep them healthy and capable of playing this vital role. A priority for soil management must include: (i) for healthy soils in natural ecosystems, protect them from conversion and degradation; (ii) for managed soils, manage in a way to protect and enhance soil biodiversity, health and sustainability and to prevent degradation; and (iii) for degraded soils, restore to full soil health. We have enough knowledge now to move forward with the implementation of best management practices to maintain and improve soil health. This analysis shows that this is not just desirable, it is essential if we are to meet the SDG targets by 2030 and achieve sustainable development more broadly in the decades to come. This article is part of the theme issue ‘The role of soils in delivering Nature's Contributions to People’.

This study analyzes the energy management approach as one of the driving factors for sustainable development, not only in enterprises, but also countries. Sustainability of an enterprise is defined as its tendency to meet the need of customers and stakeholders through creative and innovative business strategies as well as activities that have a positive influence on society and environment. In this study, sustainability is measured through the application of an energy management system, but in the wood industry, which has an increasingly significant impact on the economic development in one country. The aim of this research is to determine the current situation regarding the application of energy management practices in production and service systems. The ISO 50001 standard for energy management systems considers the energy performance achieved by an enterprise. The connections between critical factors and the level of application requirements for the energy management system were statistically analyzed in this research. It was found that in enterprises that have a certified system of quality and environmental management, a higher level of energy management system implementation is evident. The research results provide data on the scientific level for the national policy improvement, as well as a developed model based on the Plan Do Check Act (PDCA) cycle for energy management system application.

This theme issue provides an assessment of the contribution of soils to Nature's Contributions to People (NCP). The papers in this issue show that soils can contribute positively to the delivery of all NCP. These contributions can be maximized through careful soil management to provide healthy soils, but poorly managed, degraded or polluted soils may contribute negatively to the delivery of NCP. Soils are also shown to contribute positively to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Papers in the theme issue emphasize the need for careful soil management. Priorities for soil management must include: (i) for healthy soils in natural ecosystems, protect them from conversion and degradation, (ii) for managed soils, manage in a way to protect and enhance soil biodiversity, health, productivity and sustainability and to prevent degradation, and (iii) for degraded soils, restore to full soil health. Our knowledge of what constitutes sustainable soil management is mature enough to implement best management practices, in order to maintain and improve soil health. The papers in this issue show the vast potential of soils to contribute to NCP. This is not only desirable, but essential to sustain a healthy planet and if we are to deliver sustainable development in the decades to come. This article is part of the theme issue ‘The role of soils in delivering Nature’s Contributions to People’.

The article reveals the main directions of the development of the stakeholder approach to improving the competitiveness of health resort organizations, based on identifying the needs of the main groups of stakeholders and meeting them. Wellness organizations that balance the interests of internal stakeholders are represented in the market of wellness services in the position of strong participants, which, combined with a focus on customer needs, provides leadership for a long period of time. The practical use of the stakeholder approach by the management of health resorts will allow implementing a sustainable development strategy aimed at improving the quality of services and expanding their accessibility to citizens.

Purpose. The aim of the article is analysis and substantiation of possibilities of adaptation of agro-business structures to effective integration, intertwining of economic activity, convergence and unification (convergence) of their potentials that will promote overcoming of social and economic negative consequences of functioning of vertically integrated structures of holding type and strengthening of advantages of various organizational forms of enterprises small and medium agrarian business. Methodology of research. The methodological and theoretical basis of the study is theories and views presented in the works of foreign and domestic scientists. The results of the study are obtained using both general and special (economic) methods of scientific knowledge. The general historical context of convergence is considered on the basis of the historical and dialectical method; the method of analysis and synthesis is used in identifying global problems against the background of the economic crisis. Argumentation of theoretical provisions that characterize the patterns of convergence and the relationship of organizational forms of management in the agricultural sector, formed on a systematic analysis, the laws of logic, the method of scientific abstraction. Statistical, tabular and graphical methods are used for comparative analysis of economic performance of agricultural enterprises. Findings. The advantages and disadvantages of the existing agro-business structures in the conditions of new requirements of globalization, anticipated consequences of the economic crisis and orientation on the goals of sustainable development, on the basis of which objective conditions for the convergence process are formed, are revealed. Originality. It is substantiated that under the condition of convergence of different categories of enterprises the minimization of social and economic differences between them is ensured and inequalities in entering the domestic and foreign markets are levelled. Contrary to the existing radical views on the exceptional damage from the activities of agricultural holdings, a methodological approach is proposed, according to which transformational changes based on convergence will anticipate and minimize risks, especially in small and medium agribusiness, which will occur during pandemics and economic crisis. This approach will promote the cohesion of forms of management in the agricultural business, which reflects the experience of best management practices of developed countries. Practical value. The proposed scientific ideas and views on convergence, as a process of convergence and integration of potentials and resources of existing forms of management, can be used at the enterprise level, which will ensure a synergistic effect of their scale and compliance with sustainable development goals in a favourable institutional environment. Key words: agrarian business, agro-holdings, globalization, innovations, convergence, sustainable development, forms of management of agrarian enterprises.
