The moustache danio Danio dangila (Hamilton, 1822) is one of the most popular native ornamental fishes of theNorth-eastern hill region of India. The species needs immediate attention owing to its reduced abundance in the wild. The length-weight relationship of D. dangila indicated an isometric growth in general and was found to follow the cube law. The L-W relationships derived for the species were: log W = -5.009 + 3.00 log L (male and female combined); log W = -5.542 + 3.31 log L (male) and log W = -5.462 + 3.26 log L (female). The 41-50 mm size group was found to be predominant (44.25%) in the wild. The fish predominantly feeds on phytoplankton (97.12%), with Myxophycea forming 68%, followed by Zygnemophyceae 25%, Ulvophyceae 3%, Zygnematophyceae 2%, Cryptophyceae 1% and Bacillariophyceae 1%. The major zooplankton group in the diet was Rotifera. Nematodes and other similar worms also formed a part of their diet. The sex ratio (female: male) estimated was 1:1.77. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) for gravid females ranged from 2.55 to 24.12 with an average value of 7.65. The minimum and maximum fecundity were 400 and 2000 in females having a length of 52 and 64 mm and weight of 2.52 and 3.15 g respectively.

Reproductive properties of Eledone moschata from the north-eastern Aegean Sea are reported for the first time. A total of 471 specimens was collected during monthly samplings from December 2004 to November 2005. The mantle lengths of the species were between 4.5 and 15.0 cm with an average of 8.1 cm ±0.15 for 204 males, and between 2.7 and 14.0 cm with an average of 7.8 cm ±0.12 for 267 females. The annual sex ratio (males: females) of the sampled specimens was 1:1.31. Maturity stages were recorded on a monthly basis in both sexes. The highest monthly percentage of mature females (21%) and males (46%) was recorded in January 2005 and June 2005, respectively. The monthly and seasonal gonadosomatic index (GSI) results indicated that E. moschata shows two annual reproduction peaks for each sex. For males, the first spring peak occurs in March–June and the second, autumn peak is in November. For females, the first summer peak occurs in May–June and the second, winter peak is in January, respectively. On the other hand, the reproductive season extends from November to July with two peaks in the Aegean Sea. Total oocyte stock varied from 273 to 2896 with a mean of 836 ±193 oocytes. The mean size of the oocytes was 6.26 ±0.10 mm. The maximum oocyte size found was 10.7 mm. The mean length of spermatophores was of 13.66 ±0.08 mm (range: 7.3–18.3) and their average number was 52 ±6 (range: 6–172).

The flathead grey mullet species (Mugil cephalus L.) Vietnam is an euryhaline fish whose distribution ranges from the North to the South. Currently, M. cephalus is facing the threat of overexploitation, and the number of individuals in most populations is declining fast. In order to conserve the species in Vietnam, it is necessary to evaluate its genetic diversity. Therefore, this study was carried out in Vietnam from August 2012 to June 2015. The results of our study provided the analysis for 12 locus microsatellites (SSR) from 70 mature individuals (standard length > 25 cm). The study also identified a total of 35 alleles for all loci studied, among which 10 loci were polymorphic. Average value of polymorphic information content (PIC) for each polymorphic marker was 0.2889 (0.0289 to 0.5918). Coefficient heterozygous gene Ho = 0.942; He = 0.517; Fst = 0.216; Fis = - 0.8211 (Fis < 0). The genetic relationship of 70 specimens or M. cephalus in Vietnam were divided in three main groups according to three specific geographic distributions in the country, the Gulf of Tonkin, the Central and the South. There were also mixed clusters observed among the three studied regions. Individuals in close geographical distance often clustered together and formed separate groups, in which the level of molecular changes were quite low, 29% among populations, and 71% among individuals within the same population.

Common carp (Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus, 1758) is an important fish species for aquaculture in the North-east hill region (NEH) of India. However, in recent years, the growth performance of the existing stock of common carp has been a major concern. In an effort to improve fish production from farmers’ ponds and to evaluate the performance of the breed in mid hill condition, a genetically improved breed of common carp, Amur (Hungarian strain) was introduced in Meghalaya in 2010. Fingerlings of Amur common carp (weight ~14.5 g and length ~10.5 cm), reared under mid-altitude conditions in the fish farm of the ICAR Research Complex for North-eastern hill (NEH) Region, Barapani, Meghalaya, attained maturity in about 14 months period. The first breeding trial with this newly introduced variety was conducted successfully in March 2011 when the atmospheric temperature ranged between 16.0-18.30C. The fertilised eggs hatched in 78-83 h (water temperature 19.0-22.80C and pH 6.5-6.8). Three year studies revealed that the performance of Amur common carp is superior over the local existing breed in farmers ponds under the mid hill conditions.

A field experiment was conducted during the summer season of 2013 at Central Potato Research Station, Shillong, Meghalayato study the effect of sea weed saps on growth and productivity of potato in the North Eastern hill region of India.The trial was laid out in randomized block design, replicated thrice, with 10 treatments. The number of shoot per plant was found to be non-significant and vary from 2.8 to 3.0. The maximum plant at harvest was recorded under application 7.5 Kappaphycus Spray + 100% RDF while lowest under 6.25% + 50% RDF.Maximum small size tuber was found with an application of 10 % Gracilaria spray + RDF which was at par with 2.5 % Kappaphycus spray + RDF and 7.5 % Gracilariaspray + RDF but significantly superior to other treatment. However, the highest medium size tube of potato was noticed under 6.25% Kappaphycus spray along with 50% recommended dose of fertilizer. Highest large size tuber was recorded with an application of 5% Kappaphycusspray + RDF followed by 2.5% Kappaphycus spray along with RDF as well as 7.5 % Gracilaria spray + RDF which was at par, but significantly superior to rest of treatment. Application of 2.5% Kappaphycus spray + 100% RDF recorded the highest productivity of potato (27.1 t/ha) followedby 100% RDF + Kappaphycus spray @ 5.0% (26.6 t/ha) which were at par with each other but significantly superior to the rest of treatments.Based on the economic yield of potato, it may be concluded that the application of 2.5 % Kappaphycus spray + 100% RDF was found to be more profitable under rainfed condition of Meghalaya

A new genus Neooxyrrhepes gen. n. with a new species Neooxyrrhepes meghalayensis n. from Meghalaya, a state of the North Eastern region of India. Description and illustrations of the new genus and species are given. A key to the genera of subfamily Tropidopolinae from North Eastern states of India is also provided. Additonally the characters of male and female genitalia at generic and species level are also given.

AbstractThe noctuid subfamily Heliothidinae, which is represented in North America by 158 species, is redefined, largely on the basis of male genitalic characters. Of genera included in the subfamily in McDunnough's 1938 check list, only four are recognized as valid, these being Heliothis Ochs., Schinia Hbn., Heliolonche Grt., and Melaporphyria Grt. Helicoverpa Hdwk., which was described subsequent to the appearance of McDunnough's list, and Protoschinia which is described as new here, are also included. Grotella Harv., Hemigrotella B. & McD., and Neogrotella B. & B. are not considered heliothidine genera and are removed to the Stiriinae.Eight genera, which have been assigned to the Amphipyrinae because they lack the mid and hind tibial setae characteristic of other heliothidine components, have also been incorporated in the Heliothidinae; these genera are Microhelia Hamp., Heliothodes Hamp., Baptarma Sm., Eutricopis Morr., Derrima Wlk., Erythroecia Hamp., Rhodoecia Hamp., and Pyrrhia Hbn. Because of the close similarity in structure and habits between these genera and those previously mentioned, the two groups are considered to constitute a monophyletic assemblage within the Noctuidae, despite the discrepancy with respect to mid and hind tibial setae.A key to the 14 North American genera of the Heliothidinae is presented. Descriptions of genera and figures of the male and female genitalia of the type species of all valid genera and of many genera in synonymy are provided. Canthylidia Butl. and Timora Wlk. are newly synonymized to Heliothis, and Heliosea Grt. to Heliolonche Grt. A check list of the North American Heliothidinae is appended to the text.The possible phylogenetic relationship of the Heliothidinae to the Stiriinae is discussed. The latter group is raised from tribal rank in the Amphypyrinae to subfamily rank; a number of genera are added to it, and a provisional redefinition of the subfamily is presented.

A total of 212 new members of the staff of the North-Eastern Fever Hospital were Schick and Moloney tested. The Schick-positive reactors were immunised with formol toxoid and post-Schick and Moloney tests were performed. The following conclusions were reached:(1) The intradermal toxoid test of Moloney or Zoeller corresponds exactly with the pseudo response in the Schick test.(2) The pseudo response is as efficient as the Moloney for detecting possible reactors to immunising doses of toxoid, and is a more accurate control of the Schick test. The Moloney therefore appears redundant.(3) A positive MP (Moloney or pseudo) reaction accurately indicates those who will react to immunisation; but a negative MP is no guarantee that the subject will not react.(4) The MP-reaction is evidence of bacterial hypersensitiveness to specific products of the body of the diphtheria bacillus.(5) Zoeller's theory that hypersensitiveness is a half-way stage between susceptibility and immunity, is incorrect.(6) MP-reactions usually, but not invariably, develop pari passu with immunity. Because of this parallelism tests of hypersensitiveness give information as to the state of immunity.The significance of tests of infection, hypersensitiveness and immunity are considered; and the possible relationship of MP-reactions with bacterial immunity suggested.
