Although great emphasis is given on the quality of early childhood education, the demographics of the teaching personnel attract limited attention even though those characteristics are linked to the quality of education. The present study aims at exploring gender segregation in pre-primary and primary education in Cyprus, using the statistical lenses through which feminization can be understood. The article presents the number of male and female undergraduate students enrolled in pre-primary and primary education programs. Employment data are also presented. This article sets out to discuss statistical data and literature to find out which research needs to be undertaken to ensure the inclusion of more men in pre-primary and primary education in Cyprus. Statistics highlight the need to critically examine existing literature, to conduct research with both males and females and to start the process of recruiting and supporting more males moving into pre-primary and primary education.

The educational project involving the design of a school yard using Google SketchUp, presented in this paper, was originally designed and implemented by undergraduate students at the Department of Primary Education of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (UoA) in the context of their studies in the “Teaching Geography with ICT” course. The aim of the project was to create awareness of spaces and their functions, and to redesign those spaces using Google Sketch up according to criteria relating both to the environment and the needs of pupils and their education. The assessment of this initiative, carried out by the undergraduate students during the pilot study showed that there is a distinct need for connecting real spaces with technology and for familiarity with the tools that help pupils visualise the space and that Google SketchUp could be an effective tool that is easily applied to this project and can enrich geography lessons for pupils in upper primary and lower secondary education.

The purpose of this article is to investigate how the undergraduate students in the primary education programs understand mathematical information (concepts). Having an understanding of the mathematical content allows the teacher to design different approaches to teaching younger students with different learning styles and abilities. The analysis of theoretical studies published in Russian scientific literature has shown that one of the important criteria for understanding information in a particular field of knowledge is to identify logical connections between the concepts of this field. In this article the authors present the results of their study on how undergraduate students studying in the profiles of “Primary Education" and "Psychological and Pedagogical Education” form the links between the concepts used in everyday life versus the connections between mathematical concepts. The results show that other disciplines/ fields of study influence the formation of connections between mathematical concepts. In addition, some specific difficulties in establishing some of these connections were identified. Based on this research, the authors provide recommendations on specific strategies to improve the professional education for future teachers in the area of mathematical knowledge.

This paper aims to investigate students’ awareness regarding the factors that affect the environmental quality in university classrooms. For this purpose a questionnaire survey was conducted, in which 314 undergraduate students of the School of Primary Education, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, participated. The questionnaire was developed for this survey and includes questions related to indoor thermal comfort (ITC) conditions and indoor air quality (IAQ). The analysis revealed that the vast majority of the students were aware that temperature and humidity are the two factors that mainly determine the ITC levels. In general, they are also aware that the ITC levels are affected by classroom’s and individual’s characteristics. The most accepted factors considered by the students to affect the IAQ were smoking (95%) and dust (90%), while the less accepted factors were furniture (17%), wallpapers (21%) and use of printer, photocopier (29%). The results underline the need to improve students’ knowledge about the factors that affect IEQ and that measures can be taken to improve it.

This opinion piece makes connections between common strategies currently being outworked in primary schools, and a growing perception amongst lecturers that a significant minority of undergraduate students have difficulty with punctuation, a difficulty which can render their written submissions very hard to read. This piece offers possible explanation, citing the punctuation pyramid, and the long term effects of a primary education policy that encourages primary-aged children to ‘up-level’ their writing, a practice which many students bring to their undergraduate studies.

The basic aim of this paper is to investigate the perceptions, attitudes and experiences of the students of the Department of Primary Education of the University of the Aegean regarding the quality of the provided services to them by the Secretariat of Administrative Electronic Services. The survey was conducted during the second semester of the academic year 2016-2017 with the use of an anonymous written questionnaire which was completed by 128 undergraduate students of the Department of Primary Education of the University of the Aegean. The results of the survey show that students primarily consider as the most important service for them the department’s website and the service Studentsweb. The least important service for them is the communication platform uniway for mobiles. Also, the degree of satisfaction with electronic administrative services is related to the criteria: availability, ease of use, good organization, responsiveness of services to the needs and expectations of students, and the degree of information. Moreover, problems such as "Mistakes about courses’ grades" and "Unsuccessful academic books’ registration" appears to have a negative impact on the degree of satisfaction of students with the corresponding services in which the problems occur. The findings of this research can be useful to the administrative staff and faculty of the University of the Aegean as they reveal the dimensions of electronic administrative services that are important and effective and satisfy or create problems for students.
