Abstract Background Coronary hearth diseases are among the main causes of death in adults. Increase of oxidative stress and defects in antioxidant defense play a major role in endothelium performance and are an effective factor in progress of atherosclerosis. Some studies have also reported different malondialdehyde and total antioxidant capacity among the atherosclerosis patients.Methods In this case-control study, 44 atherosclerosis patients referring to Shahid Madani treatment-education center were considered as the case group; while 44 healthy peoples were placed in the control group. Demographic data and anthropometric indices were measured. Food frequency questionnaire and international physical activity questionnaires were also completed. After 12 hours of fasting, 10 ml blood was sampled from the participants. Uric acid, vitamin C, TAC and MDA were also measured. The data were finally analyzed by SPSS Ver 22 software.Results A significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of uric acid (P<0.001) and vitamin C (P<0.03). However, mean MDA and TAC showed no significant difference between the two groups. The two groups’ difference in terms of vitamin A, E and beta carotene, zinc and selenium intake was not significant. A significant difference was however detected between the two groups in terms of vitamin C (P<0.047). A significant relationship was also observed between the systolic pressure and CHD (P<0.028).Conclusion Results of this study indicated that the uric acid and vitamin C levels of atherosclerosis patients had significant increase and decrease in comparison with the healthy subjects, respectively. Mean TAC and antioxidant levels of their diets (except for vitamin C) showed no significant difference. Systolic blood pressure of the patients was significantly higher than the controls.

Due to the lack of significant correlation between TAC and CHD in this study, it seems that different results will be obtained with increasing sample size.

Abstract Background: Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) are at the highest risk of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). Adequate access and knowledge about donning and doffing of personal protective equipment (PPE) can decrease the risk of transmission. The aim of this study was to assess the possible factors associated with increasing risk of COVID-19 among EMTs.Methods: This study was a case-control study conducted in Tehran, Iran during 18th February to 20th April 2020. Case group was consisted of confirmed COVID-19 EMTs based on the results of reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and/or lung computed tomography scan. Healthy EMTs were randomly selected as control group. Patients were asked to fill out a checklist including demographic data, data related to the work situation (such as number of missions and type of mask and cloth) and PPE precautions.Results: Sixty-eight patients and 148 healthy persons took part in this study as case and control group, respectively. Having two EMTs involved directly in taking care of patients (p < 0.001) and working with a confirmed case teammate (p < 0.001), considering the precautions such as seal check after wearing the mask (p=0.015), covering the hair with a medical hat (p<0.001), not using personal items despite protective clothing (p<0.001), and avoiding contact with the outer surface of clothing while removing (p<0.001) had significant difference in two groups.Conclusion: We found that the type of used face masks (the surgical mask) and the type of used cloths (using NW (disposable, one-piece, non-waterproof protective cloth)) are correlated with the higher risk of COVID-19 in EMTs.

Background: Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) refers to the incidence of two or more abortions before the first half of pregnancy. Oxidative stress has been hypothesized to play a central role in RPL. Objective: To investigate the relationship between Q192R and L55M polymorphisms of PON1 as antioxidant enzyme and the risk of RPL. Materials and Methods: In this case–control study, 110 women with RPL (case) and 110 healthy fertile women (control) referred to the Research and Clinical Center for Infertility, Shiraz, Iran were enrolled. Genomic DNA was extracted from the peripheral blood in all participants. Polymorphisms were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Results: Statistical analysis of Q192R polymorphism showed a significant difference for the RR genotype between the case and control group (OR = 11, CI = 1.39–86.87, p = 0.005) but none for the QR and QQ genotypes. No significant association was observed between the R and Q allelic frequency in the RPL participants compared to the control group (p = 0.53). Also, statistical analysis of the L55M polymorphism for MM genotype in the case group compared with the control group showed a significant difference (OR = 3.59, CI = 0.97–13.30, p = 0.042), but none for the LM and LL genotypes. Conclusion: The findings showed a significant correlation between the Q192R polymorphisms and the L55M PON1 enzyme and RPL in this study population. Abstract Background Perinatal asphyxia is one of the main causes of preterm infant mortality. Some studies have shown that The Urinary Uric Acid / Cr (UUA/Cr) ratio may be used as an additional marker for perinatal asphyxia.This study intend to investigate the relationship of this ratio with outcomes of preterm infants admitted to NICU. Methods This case–control study was carried on 102 preterm newborn infants with gestational age of 30 weeks to 33 weeks and 6 days admitted in the neonatal intensive care unit.The case group, consisted of 51 premature neonates with a history of intubation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, mechanical ventilation and Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP) at birth, were compared with 51 matched neonates. The UUA/Cr ratio was measured in the first 24 h after birth. Complications during hospitalization, duration of hospitalization, and final outcome were evaluated. Results The mean level of UUA/Cr ratio in case and control group were 5.4 ± 4.1 and 3.6 9 ± 2.9 respectively and this difference was statistically significant (p = 0.014). The UUA/Cr ratio were significantly higher in females, cesarean section delivery, Apgar score ≥ 8, neonates without any complication and neonates with less than 10 days of hospitalization. However, this ratio has no predictive value for the incidence of complications during hospitalization and long-term hospital stay for infants of the case group. Conclusions The Urinary Uric Acid / Cr ratio in the first 24 h after birth in preterm neonates who underwent intubation, NCPAP or cardiopulmonary resuscitation was higher than healthy neonates.

Background: Genetic factors could account for recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). The RAN gene is a member of the ”large RAS family” and a small GTPase that is essential for the translocation of Ribonucleic acid (RNA) and proteins through the nuclear pore. Mutation in the RAN constitutive gene could stop DNA synthesis and alter the expression of genes in the uterus, likely playing a role in recurrent miscarriage. Objective: The aim was to investigate the frequency of RAN (rs 14035) polymorphism in women with RPL compared with women without abortion history. Materials and Methods: In this case-control study, 100 women with at least two consecutive miscarriages before the 20th wk of gestation and having spouses with karyotype and normal sperm parameters as the case group and 100 women with no history of abortion and having at least one successful pregnancy and normal delivery as the control group. The groups were age matched (20-40 yr). The rs 14035 polymorphism of RAN gene was investigated by Polymerase Chain Reaction- Restriction Fragment Length poly morphism technique and the frequency of which was compared between the two groups. Results: The frequency of TT, TC, and CC genotypes of RAN gene polymorphism in the case group were 9%, 40%, and 51%, respectively, and in the control group were 11%, 38%, and 51%, respectively. There was no significant difference in the genotypes between two groups (p = 0.882). Conclusion: According to our results, it seems that RAN polymorphism (rs 14035) is not associated with the risk of RPL in this study population. When cases of dental crowding are identified and diagnosed promptly, interceptive orthodontics is particularly successful.Aim: To assess the differences in the eruption sequence of the mandibular canine and first premolar teeth in children with and without dental crowding.Materials and Methods: Children who attended the Shiraz Dental School's orthodontic clinic (Iran) from September to December 2012 were enrolled in this case-control study. Tooth size arch length discrepancy (TSALD) of all 8-10 year olds was calculated from patients’ dental models. Thirty-six children were randomly selected from those with TSALD of equal or less than 4mm (those with crowding). Each selected case was matched for sex and age with another child (as control) with TSALD>−4mm attending the same clinic, in the same time period. The existing panoramic radiographs were traced and the eruption percentages were measured for mandibular canine and first premolar teeth. The mean difference between canine and first premolar eruption percentages was compared between the case and control groups using the SPSS (version PASW 18) software and a paired sample t-test.Results: Canine and first premolar eruption percentages in the case group were 65.82±13.00 and 78.92±10.15 percent, respectively. The mean eruption percentages for canines and first premolars of the control group were 74.12±14.55 and 75.47±11.60 percent, respectively. There was a significant difference in pre-eruptive positions of canine and first premolar teeth in those with moderate to severe crowding when compared to the control group (p<0.001).Conclusion: These findings may improve the early diagnosis of children with high risk of developing moderate to severe crowding during mixed dentition.

Abstract Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association between p73 C14T (rs1801173) polymorphism and the risk of GC in a Chinese Han population. Methods: A hospital-based case-control study was conducted. A total of 577 GC cases and 678 normal controls were recruited. Their genotypes were determined using the SnapShot method. Results: The genotype frequency distribution of the case group and the control group were consistent with the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. No significant difference was found in the distribution of gender, age, and drinking history between the case group and the control group. A correlation was observed between smoking and the incidence of GC (P = 0.006). Three genotypes of CC, CT, and TT were found in the rs1801173 locus of p73. The distribution of the dominant model/recessive model did not significantly differ (P = 0.688; 0.937). No statistical difference was found even after adjustment was performed via logistic regression analysis (P = 0.703; 0.990). The frequency distribution between the two groups also did not significantly differ (P = 0.763). Conclusion: Smoking is related to the occurrence and development of GC. No association was found between p73 rs1801173 C > T SNP and the risk of GC in a Chinese Han population. However, additional larger studies and tissue-specific biological characterization are required to confirm these findings.

Aim: There are many defined risk factors for the formation of gallstones and nutrition is one of them. We have investigated if there is a relationship between diet and gallstone formation in Turkish gallstone patients. Methods: This prospective case-control study were performed between July 2018- March 2019. A food consumption survey was performed to the gallstone patients and control group. The results of demographic and food consumption data of gallstone patients were compared. Results: There were 110 patients with gallbladder stones and 115 controls with no gallbladder stones. There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of demographic data; but body mass index was higher and regular physical activity was lower in case group. Although case group eat more eggs than the controls, there were no statistically significant difference. In case group, the consumption of snack and cheese, energy intake, more daily fat consumption, more saturated fatty acids, and cholesterol uptake was higher, whereas red meat consumption was lower. Conclusion: A significant association between the gallstone and the nutrition especially in particular nutritional elements supports the fact that, diet is an important risk factor for gallbladder stone formation. Abstract Back groundThe precise etiology of infantile colic has not been elucidated after many years of research. In this study, we aimed to determine the association of fecal calprotectin with infantile colic.MethodThis case control study was performed on colicky infants referred to pediatrics clinics in Zanjan over a 6-month period. Infantile colic was clinically defined based on wessel criteria. The control group consisted of healthy infants matched for age, sex, weight, and type of feeding with the case group. Fecal calprotectin levels were measured in both groups by the ELISA method.ResultsForty infants were divided equally into case and control groups. The cases consisted of 11 boys (55%) and 9 girls (45%) with a mean age of 63 days and in the control group there was 12 boys (60%) and 8 girls (40%) with mean age of 48 days. Fecal calprotectin was positive in 17 (85%) cases and 6 (30%) controls. This difference was statistically significant. There was no significant difference in fecal calprotectin regarding sex, age, weight and type of nutrition in both colicky infants and controlsConclusionFecal calprotectin levels in colicky infants were significantly higher than healthy infants.

Background and Objectives: Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease that is caused by the Brucella species. This disease is common in Iran and its incidence is increasing .This study measures serum vitamin D levels in patients with brucellosis and healthy people. Materials and Methods: This research was conducted as a case-control study at Tohid Hospital, Sanandaj, Iran. The calculated sample size included 90 patients in the case group and 90 patients in the control group. The measurement of vitamin D levels in the case and control groups were performed by ELISA. Results: The mean serum vitamin D level was 19.91 ng/ml in the case group and 22.87 ng/ml in the control group. (Serum vitamin D level <10 ng/mL is accepted as deficiency, 10-30 ng/mL as insufficiency, 30-100 ng/mL as sufficiency, and >100 ng/mL as toxicity). Conclusion: There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of vitamin D deficiency (p-value=0.097).
