Abstract Purpose: Caregivers have to manage tasks at home such as providing management of the patient’s follow-up. Social support is known to have protective effects, especially for family members and caregivers for cancer patients. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of care on home care and perceived social support on cancer burden. Methods: A descriptive and cross-sectional study. This study was conducted in the Chemotherapy Day Treatment Unit of a University Research and Application Hospital. a 222 patients were included in the study. In this study, Caregiver and Patient Identification Form, Caregiver's Home Care Practices Questionnaire Form, Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale, Perceived Multidimensional Social Support Scale, Karnofsky Performance Scales were used. The data of the study were collected by face-to-face interviews conducted with the caregivers. Results: In our research the social support level was found to be moderately adequate and had a mild maintenance burden. In our study, when the relationship between the multidimensional perceived social support scale scores and the Zarit care load scale scores is examined it was found that there was a significant relation between the perceived social support total scores of caregivers and the care burden scores in a weak and negative way (p <.01). Conclusion: It has been determined that the caregivers of cancer patients have taken care of their home care practices and the perceived lack of social support.

Abstract Background: The perceived social support of breast cancer patients has a great effect on regulating their negative emotions such as anxiety and depression, which is helpful to improve their mental health level. The Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS) is a frequently used instrument designed to assess the degree of perceived social support. However, the psychometric properties of PSSS in breast cancer patients have not been adequately studied. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the factor structure of PSSS and examine its measurement invariance across different demographic variables in a sample of breast cancer patients.Method: This study involved 989 female patients diagnosed with breast cancer, aged from 25 to 72 years old (Mean age = 47.67 years, SD = 8.87). The single-group confirmatory factor analysis was administrated to examine the factor structure of PSSS. The multi-group confirmatory factor analysis was used to demonstrate the measurement invariance of PSSS across different sociodemographic variables. Results: The PSSS had satisfactory reliability and validity in current sample. The three-factor model fit well in the overall sample and population subgroups. Configural, metric, scalar, and strict invariances were all supported by the data of breast cancer samples across different age, places of residence and educational levels. Conclusion: This study examined the factor structure and measurement invariance of PSSS across different demographic variables in women diagnosed with breast cancer. Our results proved that PSSS is suitable for use among breast cancer patients.

Background: The study was conducted to determine the relationship between self-stigmatization and perceived social support in caregivers of schizophrenia with patient. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used. The study sample consisted of 84 participants who cared for schizophrenic patients registered in a community mental health center. In the data collection, the ‘Self-stigmatizing Scale for Families’ and ‘Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale’ were used. The data were analyzed via frequency, mean, standard deviation, Cronbach’s alpha analysis, linear regression, Pearson correlation analysis, independent samples t-test, and ANOVA test. Results: Self-stigmatization (32.48 ± 15.15) and perceived social support (44.36 ± 22.88) were found to be moderate in caregivers. Self-stigmatization was found to be higher in caregivers who do not work; have a spouse, mother, or father; have a disease; do not receive support from their family and have not received any education about schizophrenia ( p < .05). It was determined that, with increasing age, perceived social support decreases, and the perception of social support increases in caregivers who are high school graduates, working, having children, have no illness, and are educated about schizophrenia ( p < .05). It was determined that, as the level of perceived social support increases in caregivers, self-stigmatization decreases ( p < .05). Conclusion: It was determined that, as the perceived social support increases in caregivers, self-stigmatization decreases. We recommend providing informative support about schizophrenia, to increase hope and social-skill training, and to implement interventions that include caregivers in the fight against stigma.

(1) Background: Evidence suggests that organizational processes of hospitals have an impact on patient-professional interactions. Within the nurse-patient interaction, nurses play a key role providing social support. Factors influencing the nurse-patient interaction have seldomly been researched. We aimed to examine whether the process organization in hospitals is associated with breast cancer patients’ perceived social support from nurses.; (2) Methods: Data analysis based on a cross-sectional patient survey (2979 breast cancer patients, 83 German hospitals) and information on hospital structures. Associations between process organization and perceived social support were analyzed with logistic hierarchical regression models adjusted for patient characteristics and hospital structures.; (3) Results: Most patients were 40–69 years old and classified with UICC stage II or III. Native language, age and hospital ownership status showed significant associations to the perception of social support. Patients treated in hospitals with better process organization at admission (OR 3.61; 95%-CI 1.67, 7.78) and during the hospital stay (OR 2.11; 95%-CI 1.04; 4.29) perceived significantly more social support from nurses.; (4) Conclusions: Designing a supportive nursing work environment and improving process organization in hospitals may create conditions conducive for a supportive patient-nurse interaction. More research is needed to better understand mechanisms behind the associations found.

Background: Schizophrenia is a chronic mental illness that strongly affects not only the patients with schizophrenia, but also their families and close relatives. So far, family research on patients with schizophrenia has mainly focused on parents, but has neglected siblings. Aim: This study aims to evaluate the well-being of 103 siblings of patients with schizophrenia within the Lazarus and Folkman’s Transactional Coping and Stress Model. Materials: A Sociodemographic Information Form, Subjective Well-being Scale, Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale, Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale, Ways of Coping Scale and Shortened Perceived Parental Rearing Styles Form were administered to the siblings of patients with schizophrenia. Results: The results of this study revealed that well-being was associated with perceived mother overprotection, perceived social support, problem-focused coping and indirect coping. Social support moderated the relationship between burden and well-being as a buffering factor. Conclusion: Therefore, siblings of patients with schizophrenia should be given access to social support and their problem-focused coping strategies should be strengthened. Besides, parents should be supported to provide suitable care for the siblings of patients with schizophrenia.
