This paper aims to examine the development of spirituality that is traversed through the grave pilgrimage tradition by utilizing symbolic interactionist theory, religious and cultural theory, and spiritual intelligence theory. This study wanted to reveal the process and impact of a person’s spiritual change after carrying out the tradition of pilgrimage in the Tomb of Shaykh Syamsuddin al-Wasil, Kediri city. The results of this study show that first, spiritual process of pilgrims starts from the reason for making the tomb of Shaykh Syamsuddin Al-Wasil, Kediri city as an object of spiritual education, namely a media reminder for pilgrims, efforts to approach pilgrims to Allah, and as a place of prayer. The spiritual process itself is divided into three stages, namely; (1) pre-pilgrimage by purifying with ablution, (2) the stage of pilgrimage begins with tawasul on special people, reading the Qur’an, reading tahlil and finally reading the do’a, (3) after the pilgrimage by doing shodaqoh. Second, in terms of spiritual changes in the pilgrim’s self, namely; (1) inner changes such as calmness of heart and feeling holy heart, (2) changes in the end like feeling in living life more diligently and zealously, feeling lazy disappears, and pilgrims can control emotions.

This article is based on the keynote speech addressed by the author for the 15th International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry that took place in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on May 16, 2019. It is presented as a part of the research work carried out first by my father who came to this Conference the first year and by my research center CREA (Community of Research on Excellence for All) in the last 25 years. I directly connect our way of doing research, with and for society, with three stories of personal transformation, resistance, and improvement of very special people. These stories show the social impact of our research when we work with and for the people, changing the world.

This chapter discusses the three main things the early Christian writers found in Matthew 5–7. Those were, first, the Beatitudes with promises of spiritual goods made to what was considered to be a small group of special people, but with the application in city preachers to lay people gaining the goods of peace and order and much more in the life to come. Second, prayer, particularly the Lord’s Prayer with its eschatological orientation still very strong in the interpretations, along with trust in divine providence. Third, the Christian virtues and the nature of the relationship between the Testaments, as illustrated by Jesus’ ‘antitheses’: ‘But I say unto you …’ where there is a marked dialectic between penitential realism and inspiring idealism. The range of interpretations is diverse without being conflicting.

Although the Bible is not a work of systematic philosophy, it none the less contains a wide variety of philosophical and theological ideas which have served as the framework for rabbinic speculation through the centuries. Although these views about the nature and activity of God are not presented systematically, they do provide an overview of the ancient Israelite understanding of the Godhead, creation, divine providence and human destiny. Throughout rabbinic literature these notions served as the bedrock for theological speculation, and with the emergence of systematic Jewish philosophy in the Middle Ages, they came to preoccupy a variety of thinkers. Similarly, in the post-Enlightenment period until the present, scriptural teaching has served as the starting point for philosophical and theological reflection. Foremost among scriptural beliefs is the conviction that one God has created the cosmos. As the transcendent creator of the universe, he reigns supreme throughout nature and is intimately involved in earthly life. God is both omnipotent and omniscient and exercises divine providence over all creatures – from on high he oversees all the inhabitants of the earth. In exercising his providential care, Scripture repeatedly asserts, God is a benevolent ruler who shows compassion and mercy to all. Furthermore, as lord of history, he has chosen Israel to be his special people and has revealed the Torah to them on Mount Sinai. The Jewish people are to be a light to the nations, and from their midst will come a Messianic redeemer who will inaugurate a period of divine deliverance and eventually usher in the world to come. Israel thus plays a central role in the unfolding of God’s plan for all human beings.
