Abstract In Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) very small amount of cutting fluids are used. Currently, nanoparticles are added into cutting fluids to magnify the cooling and lubricating properties. Several studies are available on MQL to check the machining performance in terms of cooling and lubrication using nanofluids like Ag, SiO2, MoS2, Al2O3, Cu and MWCNT. However, limited evidences are available in applying hybrid nanoparticles in machining processes. Present research investigates the effect of hybridization of two different nanofluids on machining performance in turning operation of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Moreover, machineability was evaluated and analyzed by performing turning using minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) cooling technique. Cutting temperature and surface roughness of machined surface were taken as technological performance parameters to evaluate the machinability of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Hybridization was performed by mixing alumina based nanofluid into graphene nanoparticles in a fixed volumetric proportion 80:20 using vegetable oil as base fluid. Additionally, machining performance was evaluated by preparing hybrid nanofluid in different concentrations like (0.25,0.50,0.75 and 1.00vol%) and tested for thermophysical properties before experimentation. Significant improvements in thermophysical properties were observed during hybridization of Al2O3 and Graphene. For parametric optimization and design of experiment, Taguchi orthogonal array has been employed. Machining performance of vegetable oil base alumina-graphene hybrid nanofluid was compared with monotype alumina based nanofluid and a significant reduction cutting temperature and surface roughness was observed respectively.

The present work evaluates the performance of different machining environments such as dry, wet, minimum quantity lubrication, Al2O3 nanofluids based minimum quantity lubrication, CuO nanofluids based minimum quantity lubrication and Al–CuO hybrid nanofluids based minimum quantity lubrication on machining performance characteristics during turning of EN-24. The nanofluids and hybrid nanofluids were prepared by adding the Al2O3, CuO and Al2O3/CuO to the soluble oil with different weight percentages (0.5 wt.%, 1 wt.%, 1.5 wt.%). The thermal and tribological properties of hybrid nanofluid and nanofluids were analyzed. The comparative analysis of different turning environments has been done. From comparative analysis it is clearly observed that the nanofluids and hybrid nanofluid shows better performance during turning of EN-24 steel. So there is a need for optimization of parameters during turning of EN-24 under Al2O3 nanofluids based minimum quantity lubrication, CuO nanofluids based minimum quantity lubrication and Al–CuO hybrid nanofluids based minimum quantity lubrication. The optimization of parameters has been done by response surface methodology. The significance of developed model was identified from analysis of variance. Multi-response optimization was done using desirability function approach. To verify the accuracy of developed models, confirmatory experiments were performed. The experimental results reveal that Al–CuO hybrid nanofluids based minimum quantity lubrication significantly improves surface quality, reduces cutting temperature and cutting forces.

The influence of lubrication has an effect on health, surroundings, and manufacturing regions. In the current analysis, the impact of turning parameters such as cutting speed, feed rate and cutting conditions on surface roughness (Ra), cutting temperature, tool wear, and chip morphology are examined on SKD 11 steel. The experiments were performed with Taguchi's L18 orthogonal-array. The significance of the investigation involved in comparing the effect of dry, oil machining, and nano lubricants with minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) in turning process. Additionally, simple additive weighting method (SAW) has been utilized to enhance the turning parameters in SKD 11 steel for improved machining performance. Results indicate that the use of nanoparticles as cutting fluids serve in reducing the surface roughness, cutting temperature, and wear on the tool.

This work is motivated by environmentally conscious machining and focus on the basic properties and applicability of nano cutting fluids in machining. Cutting fluids are formulated by dispersing carbon nanotubes (CNT) in coconut oil (CC) with varying percentage of nanoparticle inclusions (NPI). The properties such as density, heat transfer coefficient, dynamic viscosity and thermal conductivity are determined before their application. The formulated nanofluids are applied during machining through minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) technique. Microbial contamination and biodegradability tests are conducted to assess the quality of nanocutting fluids. Viscosity is found to decrease with increase in temperature where, as specific heat slightly decreased with an increase in NPI for CNT dispersed fluids. It is observed that nanofluids in MQL upshot in the reduction of cutting force, cutting temperature, tool wear and surface roughness. CNT dispersed cutting fluids at 0.5% NPI and speed of 60 m/min, 0.131 mm/rev feed and 0.5 mm depth of cut (DOC) shown better performance in the selected range of parameters. Machining performance is more influenced by the percentage of nanoparticles and then the depth of cut, speed and feed respectively. For the cutting conditions, the influence of DOC in obtaining minimum cutting forces and reducing cutting temperatures is found to be 85% and 45% respectively for nBA dispersed fluids. The extent of influence of %NPI is found to be 35.19% for CNT dispersed fluids to obtain reduced cutting forces, cutting temperatures, tool wear and surface roughness according to GRA analysis. Microbial contamination is observed to be the least for 0.5% NPI dispersed fluids. It is also identified that nano cutting fluids used in this work are biodegradable and biologically treatable for disposal as well.

Duplex stainless steel (DSS)-2205 comes under hard to machine material owing to its inherent properties but more applications in severe working conditions hence, selection of turning process parameters and suitable cutting fluids of DSS-2205 is essential. In the present work, investigate the performance of Deionized water, neat cut oil, and emulsified fluid on cutting temperature and surface roughness during turning of duplex stainless steel-2205 under minimum quantity lubrication technique. Based on a face-centered composite design, 20 experiments were conducted with varying speed, feed, and depth of cut in three levels for three different fluids. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is used to identify significant parameters that affect the response. Numerical optimization was carried out under Desirability Function Analysis (DFA) for cutting temperature during deionized water cutting fluid for surface roughness during emulsified cutting fluid. Depth of cut is the significant factor for cutting temperature contribution is 74.83% during Deionized water as a fluid, and feed is the significant factor for surface roughness contribution is 93.57% during emulsified fluid. The optimum cutting parameters were determined for speed (50m/min), feed (0.051mm/rev) and depth of cut (0.4mm). Experimental results revealed that Deionized water gives better results for reduced the cutting temperature and emulsified fluid for surface roughness reduction.

A minimum quantity lubrication system using biodegradable cutting fluids has facilitated the excellent machining performance and is observed as more sustainable. In the view of enhancement of machining performance, the utilization of nanofluids with a minimum quantity lubrication system as a cutting fluid delivered noteworthy outcomes. For the present experimental investigation, the monotype nanofluids (copper oxide and zinc oxide) and a hybrid nanofluid (copper oxide/zinc oxide) were synthesized by using a two-step method. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis were performed to characterize the synthesized nanoparticles. A vegetable oil was utilized as a base fluid and three types of nanofluids were prepared by the addition of a surfactant (butenol). Also, ultrasonication has been performed to avoid the agglomeration of nanoparticles into the base fluid. The thermal conductivity evaluation of prepared nanofluids was carried out by using a hot wire method. The effects of three nanofluids were investigated by considering three machining input variables (cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut) on response variables (surface roughness and cutting zone temperature) during bearing steel turning under nanofluid minimum quantity lubrication cooling conditions. The multi-objective optimization was performed by using grey relational analysis and found that the hybrid nanofluid (copper oxide/zinc oxide) was noted as the highly effective cooling condition as equated to copper oxide and zinc oxide monotype nanofluid. The hybrid nanofluid (copper oxide/zinc oxide) shows a 65% and 60% reduction in surface roughness on comparing with copper oxide and zinc oxide nanofluids, respectively. Also, the minimization of cutting zone temperature was observed under the hybrid nanofluid (copper oxide/zinc oxide) by 11% and 13% on equating with copper oxide and zinc oxide nanofluids, respectively.

AbstractIn the present work, an attempt has been made to establish the accurate surface roughness (Ra, Rq and Rz) prediction model using response surface methodology with Box–Cox transformation in turning of Titanium (Grade-II) under minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) conditions. This surface roughness model has been developed in terms of machining parameters such as cutting speed, feed rate and approach angle. Firstly, some experiments are designed and conducted to determine the optimal MQL parameters of lubricant flow rate, input pressure and compressed air flow rate. After analyzing the MQL parameter, the final experiments are performed with cubic boron nitride (CBN) tool to optimize the machining parameters for surface roughness values i. e., Ra, Rq and Rz using desirability analysis. The outcomes demonstrate that the feed rate is the most influencing factor in the surface roughness values as compared to cutting speed and approach angle. The predicted results are fairly close to experimental values and hence, the developed models using Box-Cox transformation can be used for prediction satisfactorily.

This paper is concentrated on the exploration of carbonaceous nanocutting fluids with the concept of tri-hybridization with improved lubricative and cooling properties by using multi-walled carbon nanotubes, hexagonal boron nitride , and graphene nanoparticles with neat cold-pressed coconut oil in a fixed volumetric proportion. The rheological properties of the nanofluids were studied to assess their performance in real-time end milling operations using an AA7075 work piece on a CNC lathe machine under a minimum quantity lubrication environment. At the outset, the carbonaceous nanofluids gave good performance when compared to conventional cutting fluids. Furthermore, the surfaces of the tribo-pairs and the chips formed were analyzed using a profilometer and high-end microscopes. The results obtained from the experiments confirm that the tri-hybridized carbonaceous nanolubricant has reduced the cutting force, tool wear, and surface roughness when correlated to monotype nanofluids. The scanning electron microscope images of the surface and tool were studied and it was found that the surface quality was maintained while end milling with tri-hybridized carbonaceous nanofluid. Improvement of ∼17%, 20% and 25% in cutting forces, surface roughness and tool wear was found in tri-hybrid fluid when compared to other fluids. Thus, the present work indicates that the addition of carbon-based nanoparticles with coconut oil has offered better performance and is found to be a credible alternative to existing conventional cutting fluids.
