Abstract The invasive Cryptostegia madagascariensis occupies riparian areas covered by tropical Cambisols throughout the North-eastern Brazil however litter is known regarding its ability to impact litter inputs, and ecosystem processes. This study aimed to characterize the effects of the invader on the litter deposition, soil physical-chemical properties, litter nutrient content, and the litter decay rate in a Tropical Cambisol. Comparisons of native and invaded environments showed that C. madagascariensis alters the quantity of litter deposition during both dry and rainy seasons. In contrast to native species, C. madagascariensis litterfall displayed litter seasonal variation (rainy vs. dry season), however invaded sites had higher litter biomass compared to native sites. C. madagascariensis litter was enriched in soil organic matter, N, P, and K contents as compared to the native litter. Compared to native environments, invaded ones had significantly decreased soil temperature and soil water content. Results suggest that C. madagascariensis enhances litter and N, P, and K availability in ways that have potential to impact soil ecosystem in the Tropical Cambisols from Caatinga ecoregion, Brazil.

A taxonomic revision of the Nystiellidae from Brazil, including samples from the Rio Grande Rise, South Atlantic, was performed based on shell morphology. Five genera and 17 species were recognized. For the richest genus,Eccliseogyra, the three species previously recorded from Brazil were revised:E. brasiliensisandE. maracatu, previously known only from their respective type series, were re-examined. Newly available material ofE. maracatuexpanded the known geographic range of this species to off south-east Brazil.Eccliseogyra nitidais now recorded from north-eastern to south-eastern Brazil, as well as from the Rio Grande Rise. Three species ofEccliseogyraare newly recorded from the South Atlantic:E. monnioti, previously known from the north-eastern Atlantic, occurs off eastern Brazil and on the Rio Grande Rise; its protoconch is described for the first time, confirming its family allocation.Eccliseogyra pyrrhiasoccurs off eastern Brazil and on the Rio Grande Rise, andE. folinioff eastern Brazil. The genusIphitusis newly recorded from the South Atlantic.Iphitus robertsiwas found off northern Brazil, although the shells show some differences from the type material, with less-pronounced spiral keels. Additional new finds showed thatIphitus cancellatusranges from eastern Brazil to the Rio Grande Rise, and Iphitusnotiossp. nov. is restricted to the Rio Grande Rise.Narrimania, previously recorded from Brazil based on dubious records, is confirmed, including the only two living species described for the genus:N. azelotes, previously only known from the type locality in Florida, andN. concinna, previously known from the Mediterranean. A third species,Narrimania raquelaesp. nov. is described from eastern Brazil, diagnosed by its numerous and thinner cancellate sculpture. To the three species ofOpaliopsispreviously known from Brazil, a fourth species,O. arnaldoisp. nov., is added from eastern Brazil, and diagnosed by its very thin spiral sculpture, absence of a varix, and thinner microscopic parallel axial striae.Papuliscala nordestina, originally described from north-east Brazil, is recorded off eastern Brazil and synonymized withP. elongata, a species previously known only from the North Atlantic.

The large majority of cetacean interspecific studies report only on dolphin interactions, while studies on interactions between odontocete and mysticete are less common. The present work aims to report on sightings of cetacean interactions, during the breeding season of humpback whales(Megaptera novaeangliae), along 370 km of the Bahia State, north-eastern Brazil, addressing aspects of cetacean distribution and behaviour. During 7 seasons (2000–2006), a total of 230 research cruises were performed, in which 38 events of interactions among humpback whales and other cetaceans(Tursiops truncatus, Steno bredanensis, Peponocephala electraandBalaenoptera acutorostrata)were observed, plus another 5 encounters without the whale's presence, includingT. truncatus, S. bredanensis, P. electra, Stenella clymeneandStenella attenuata. Our results confirm the occurrence of multiple cetacean species in the Bahia State, being the first study in the world to report on a large range of interactions involving another 4 cetacean species, grouped with up to 3 mixed species per sighting, with humpback whales in their annual breeding ground.

Two new species of Athenaea Sendtn. (Solanaceae) from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest are described and illustrated. Athenaea altoserranae I.M.C. Rodrigues & Stehmann, sp. nov. from the Serra do Mar range, in São Paulo State and Athenaea hunzikeriana I.M.C. Rodrigues & Stehmann, sp. nov. from a restricted area in the north-eastern region of Minas Gerais State and the southern part of Bahia State. Both species have brown to purple-brown or purple mature fruits, a character not found in other species of Athenaea. Descriptions, illustrations, complete specimen citations and maps of both species are provided. A dichotomous key to all species of Athenaea is also presented.

Non-native Pacific oyster Magallana gigas (Thunberg, 1793) was introduced to the Mediter-ranean Sea for aquaculture purposes in the 1960s. Although this species was not introduced for aquaculture to the Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea, in the 1970s, it was reported in the Lim Bay, in the North-eastern Adriatic. Until recently, there has been no research on the species in the Croatian part of the Adriatic. The aim of this research was to summarize existing and novel data on the distribution of M. gigas in coastal areas of the Eastern Adriatic and to provide a baseline for the future monitoring and assessment programmes of the species. Distribution of M. gigas was determined by three different methods: (i) a visual census of the presence of M. gigas specimens in the medio-littoral zone; (ii) DNA identification of M. gigas larvae in the water column; and (iii) the presence of M. gigas in the subtidal zone at depth between 25 and 40 m. Magallana gigas has a well-established population in the medio-littoral zone of natural and anthropogenic habitats along the coast of the North-eastern Adriatic Sea (west coast of Istria peninsula), but it is not present in the deeper layers . In the Central-eastern and South-eastern Adriatic Sea, the species was either absent or sporadically recorded with no evidence of fully established populations. Considering the great invasion success of M. gigas worldwide and effects that this species could have on the invaded ecosystem (e.g. competition for food and space with native species), detailed future monitoring is needed for the Eastern Adriatic Sea.

The 230 km long coast of Alagoas State, in north-eastern Brazil, has diverse reef ecosystems, made from corals and of sandstone, that harbour a wide range of marine invertebrate fauna. Little is known about turbellarians of the order Polycladida in most parts of the Brazilian coast, with no record from Alagoas up to date. To fill this gap expeditions were conducted on the reefs from the central coast of Alagoas, where 11 Polycladida species were found:Pericelis cata, Enchiridium evelinae, Pseudoceros bicolorand a possible new colour variation of this species,Pseudoceros rawlinsonae, Pseudobiceros pardalis, Thysanozoon brocchii, Thysanozoon alagoensissp. nov.,Armatoplana leptalea, Adenoplana evelinae, Latocestus brasiliensis, Phaenocelis medvedica. The species are described in detail through photos of live specimens and histological sections. The present work adds six species to the north-eastern Brazilian coast, one of them a new species, and all 11 species are for the first time reported from Alagoas State. Also, it is the first time thatPhaenocelis medvedica, Adenoplana evelinae, Latocestus brasiliensisandArmatoplana leptaleaare illustrated by full colour photos of live specimens and histological sections.

Taxonomic composition and seasonal dynamics of density of phytoplankton, heterotrophic bacteria, ciliates, holoplankton, meroplankton and zoobenthos of mud bottom sediments were studied in 2010–2011 in the Liman ‘Zmeinoe Ozero’. Twelve non-native species of fauna were recorded, that penetrated into the Liman with ships' ballast water (established species – 6, cryptogenic species – 2, casual species – 4). The basic ‘groups of risk’ of invasions are tintinnids infusorians, neritic species of copepods and spionid polychaetes. The attempt to define the degree of vulnerability of the recipient ecosystem to biological invasions is made on the basis of an energy balance method. The prognosis of biological pollution of the north-eastern Black Sea by ships' ballast waters was executed.

Although Brazil is the centre with the third highest diversity of Cactaceae, the distribution of species at the local scale in Brazil remains largely unknown. This article describes the distribution patterns of the Cactaceae communities in the protected area of the Contendas do Sincorá National Forest (CSNF) in a semiarid region in the north-east of Brazil. Trails were distributed between the altitudes of 290 and 596 m, along which 91 plots (1.8 ha) were established for quantitative surveys. The floristic data were also recorded separately on these trails. With the floristic survey, 18 taxa were recorded, and the quantitative surveys within the plots identified 10 species, represented by 1135 individuals. The distribution patterns of the species of Cactaceae were intermittent, which provided a likely explanation for the differences between the floristic survey and the species composition of the plots. The largest fraction of the floristic variation was not explained by environment or space, and this may be related to climatic alterations in the past, evolutionary processes, natural and anthropic disturbances and other unmeasured environmental variables. The recorded endemic, vulnerable and endangered species of the caatingas of Bahia indicate that broader protection areas for the Cactaceae species in the region of the CSNF are necessary.

Data on habitat use by marine tucuxis (Sotalia guianensis) were collected in Guanabara Bay (GB), south-eastern Brazil, over a two-year period. Diurnal activities of marine tucuxis were dominated by behaviour related to feeding/foraging (58% of all recorded time). Dolphins spent more time in feeding/foraging activities in the morning with a secondary peak in late afternoon. Dolphins were seen in waters of 2 to 35 m (11.63±6.05; median=12.0). Depths used by S. guianensis groups significantly differed from depths available in GB (Kolmogorov–Smirnov test; Z=5.72; P<0.001). Most groups (69.8%) were sighted in depths between 5.1 and 15.0 m. Dolphins occupied an area of 136.9 km2, which represents about 42% of the entire water surface of GB. Individuals selected areas within GB and avoided the most degraded ones, which suggests that habitat degradation may affect S. guianensis distribution. Diurnal distances travelled by individuals ranged from 3.3 to 27.2 km in a same day. Dolphins found in main channel and adjacent waters moved along the north–south axis of GB throughout the day and covered distances three times greater than dolphins which concentrated their activities in north-eastern areas.
