Health monitoring using vibration technique is usually conducted on cable structure. The hanger cable on the suspension bridge has a difference of span. To predict axial force of cable, the beam-string theory includes a parameter of bending stiffness. However, string theory has neglected the effect of bending stiffness. The shorter the span of the cable the greater the effect of the bending stiffness would be. This paper raises parameter moment of inertia to span ratio (I/L) to determine the apropriate analytical formula between string and beam-string. Experimental research was conducted using a vibration technique. The specimens use solid cylindrical steel beam, having length specimens of 2 m, hinge-hinge of boundary condition, and difference variations I/L of 0.024, 0.08, 0.58, 1.53 and 10.22. Numerical analysis was simulated by using Abaqus software v 6.13. The result shows that the ratio of I/L equally lowers than 0.082 has close to the analytical string theory. The ratio of I/L greather than 0.082 has close to the beam string theory.

The characteristic impedance of a power line is an important parameter in power line communication (PLC) technologies. This parameter is helpful for understanding power line impedance characteristics and achieving impedance matching. In this study, we focused on the characteristic impedance matrices (CIMs) of the medium-voltage (MV) cables. The calculation and characteristics of the CIMs were investigated with special consideration of the grounded shields and armors, which are often neglected in current research. The calculation results were validated through the experimental measurements. The results show that the MV underground cables with multiple grounding points have forward and backward CIMs, which are generally not equal unless the whole cable structure is longitudinally symmetrical. Then, the resonance phenomenon in the CIMs was analyzed. We found that the grounding of the shields and armors not only affected their own characteristic impedances but also those of the cores, and the resonance present in the CIMs should be of concern in the impedance matching of the PLC systems. Finally, the effects of the grounding resistances, cable lengths, grounding point numbers, and cable branch numbers on the CIMs of the MV underground cables were discussed through control experiments.

The Relationship

Force changes in axially loaded members can be monitored by quantifying variations in impedance signatures. However, statistical damage metrics, which are not physically related to the axial load, often lead to difficulties in accurately estimating the amount of axial force changes. Inspired by the wearable technology, this study proposes a novel wearable piezoelectric interface that can be used to monitor and quantitatively estimate the force changes in axial members. Firstly, an impedance-based force estimation method was developed for axially loaded members. The estimation was based on the relationship between the axial force level and the peak frequencies of impedance signatures, which were obtained from the wearable piezoelectric interface. The estimation of the load transfer capability from the axial member to the wearable interface was found to be an important factor for the accurate prediction of axial force. Secondly, a prototype of the wearable piezoelectric interface was designed to be easily fitted into existing axial members. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed technique was established by assessing tension force changes in a numerical model of an axially loaded cylindrical member and a lab-scale model of a prestressed cable structure.

In order to solve the difficult in calculating cable vibration, the non-linear dynamic model of cable was set up with geometrical non-linearity. The differential equation was solved using the singular perturbation method. The analytical expression of frequency and form function was deduced. The expression can be widely used for the field of measurement of cable force and identification of parameter in cable structure.
