The University of Delaware Botanic Gardens (UDBG) is at a critical juncture in its development. Momentum of shared interest at the University of Delaware and the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources favors the Gardens' advancement as an institution. Having identified endowment planning as a critical and immediate need for UDBG, the goal of this research was to gather pertinent institutional knowledge from select university-based public gardens throughout the United States that had already created an endowment. Key staff were interviewed during the summer of 2005 at Cornell Plantations, JC Raulston Arboretum, Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, and the State Botanic Garden of Georgia. Valuable insights into the procurement and management of endowments within a university-based garden environment were gained through these interviews. Utilizing these results, as well as input from an advisory Task Force, specific recommendations for the University of Delaware Botanic Gardens were made from within the following topic areas: Organizational Structure, Planning, Current Strategies, The Endowment, and The Donor.

The University of Delaware Botanic Garden (UDBG), located in Newark, is in transition, moving from its initial founding as a public garden by dedicated faculty and a volunteer group to an organized and efficient entity with widely recognized achievements and reputation. To make this leap, UDBG is faced with the particular need for an endowment to fund its operations, staff, and collections to continue future success. An endowment will provide a steady source of monetary support to operate and maintain UDBG. This study was conducted to discover the best endowment strategies based on the experience of four other public gardens associated with universities. These interviews were compiled and compared. The resulting recommendations for UDBG are based on the following five areas: organizational structure, planning, current strategies, the endowment, and the donor. The insights into how all five of these areas affect endowments may also be beneficial to other university public horticulture entities seeking to build an endowment.

[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT AUTHOR'S REQUEST.] The majority of African American college students are female, with males representing five percent of the total four-year college population (U.S. Census, 2013). Despite the evolution of race relations in the United States, African American males experience increased residential and school segregation, reduced access to qualified teachers and school staff, discipline disparities due to zero-tolerance policies, and increased likelihood of experiencing school to prison pipeline, all of which reduce their likelihood of enrollment in college (American Psychological Association Task Force, 2008; Aud, Fox, and Kewel-Ramani, 2010; Orfield, Kucsera, and Siegal-Hawley, 2012). In order to shift from deficit to strengths-based perspectives on achievement, a qualitative grounded theory investigation was utilized to uncover essential resources in participants' (N=22) social ecologies that increased the likelihood of college enrollment. As a result, insight was provided into the particular socio-ecological influences and elements that contributed to "pre-college socialization and readiness," (Harper, 2010, pg. 5) that eventually led to enrollment at a four-year college. It was found that family was the most powerful resource in participants' environments, as the initial establishment of the non-negotiable family expectation that they would attend college greatly influenced their selection in peer groups, involvement in positive community programs, as well as whether or not they were able to take advantage of other socio-ecological resources in their environment, such as positive teacher relationships and involvement in school programs.

Pediatricians throughout the world are becoming aware of the severe phychological reactions among children in man-made and natural disasters, especially in war-torn areas of the world. This paper is the second of two by a Task Force of the American Psychological Association and is focused especially on interventions. There has been relatively little attention to the needs of children, especially their psychological needs. The Task Force points out the need to have a predisaster preparation phase, a short-term intervention, and a long-term intervention phase. Most of the literature reviewed in this paper is related to natural disasters in the United States. However, it is likely that the same principles will apply to dealing with children in war-torn areas of the world. The Task Force makes a strong plea, however, for stronger evaluation of disaster-related interventions. The American Academy of Pediatrics is developing, in collaboration with Dr Karen Olness' program at Case Western Reserve University and Dr Fred Burkle's program at the University of Hawaii, a program that prepares a multidisciplinary team for crisis intervention in times of disaster, both natural and man-made. Interventions with children in disasters are clearly an emerging and very important field for all who care for children.

Universities are attempting to enhance the quality of their academic and research endeavors as competition increases for students, faculty, and funding. To further its mission of providing excellence in education, research, and extension, the University of Delaware (UD) has created a number of Centers and Institutes devoted to providing leadership to a particular field of study. Because of its unique location in the “hotbed of public horticulture,” UD is interested in establishing an interdisciplinary Center in Public Horticulture. The objective of this study was to create an initial plan for a Center in Public Horticulture at UD outlining its mission, goals, objectives, structure, and function. The plan resulted from an internal environmental assessment of the Plant and Soil Sciences Department at UD, an external environmental assessment of the field of public horticulture, and an analysis of existing Centers and Institutes at UD. This qualitative study utilized surveys, interviews, and focus groups with selected internal and external stakeholders from academia, the green industry, government, and public gardens. Internal stakeholders, in the resulting data, emphasized the Center's role in engaging undergraduate and graduate students and conducting relevant research. External stakeholders indicated that the Center may also focus on providing continuing education or certification programs to public horticulture professionals. The research regarding existing Centers and Institutes produced a variety of recommendations regarding the Center's structure, governance, funding, research activities, and partnerships and collaborations.

The paper reveals a new dimension of implementing the third mission of a university - through the activities rolled-out by Russian universities in their botanic gardens. For urban residents, botanic gardens, in addition to their main functions, are gradually becoming a place for integrating different population groups, from schoolchildren to pensioners. These public spaces conduct active educational policies aimed at many segments of a broader university community, taking into account the experience of regional environmental organizations and international Associations of Botanic Gardens. The author argues that the ecological vector is a priority for productive communication of a university with regional and global audiences at the site of its Botanic Garden, which becomes a measure of the university entering upon the way of sustainable development

International academic opportunities have gained increased attention among students, faculty, and administration at American universities. It is important for agricultural students to have an awareness and understanding of agricultural policy and issues in the United States and other countries. Also, faculty who have personal and professional ties internationally are often the link for these students to engage in global experiences. This study used descriptive survey methodology to assess students (N = 773) and faculty (N = 85) at the University of Arkansas about their perceptions of international experiences, as well as what they saw as the most influential barriers and influencers to participating in international experiences. Students noted their parents (M = 3.30) as the most impactful influence for deciding whether or not to engage in an international experience, and cost (M = 3.92) was perceived as the most influential barrier to an international experience. Faculty noted money (84.2%) and time (80.7%) as barriers, and about one-half of the faculty wished to collaborate with institutions in Europe. Faculty perceived that institutional financial support should be provided to both faculty and students (74.1%). This study notes student influencers and barriers and faculty needs and provides recommendations for improving international learning experiences and opportunities for future research.

Research at botanic gardens, from medieval times to the present day, has evolved to encompass a wide range of topics. The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, part of the University of Minnesota, is an example of a diverse, successful research program within a public university garden setting. Collaboration, mission, organization, and publications are keys to a successful research program. Future research for public gardens, including putting collections to work for conservation, understanding global change, ecological genomics, restoration ecology, seed banking, and citizen science are collaborative ideas for all botanic gardens to consider. Research can strengthen the botanic garden's role by providing public value while improving ties to the university.

1. Investigations have been made on the chromatin throughout mitosis in Alstroemeria and Bomarea, and an attempt has been made to interpret the observations. 2. Anaphase chromosomes contain single or double spirals and often chromomeres. The spiral chromonemata are held to arise from the chromomeres. 3. The resting reticulum is formed partly from the remains of the spirals, partly from the telophasic anastomoses between adjacent chromosomes. The chromomeres form the net-knots. 4. The spiral chromosomes seen in early prophase are not regarded as homologous with the anaphase chromonema. It is not certain that all the chromosomes of a nucleus assume the spiral form during prophase. 5. The paired chromatids arise during prophase by the connecting up of adjacent daughter chromomeres into two strips of chromatin. The chromosomes do not split longitudinally at any stage. 6. Connexions between the sister chromatids are regarded as remnants of the chromonema of the previous anaphase. In this respect the interpretation agrees with Martens theory of bilateral repartition. 7. Chromomeres appear in prophase as the chromatids emerge from the spiral stage. They cease to be visible in late prophase as the chromatids thicken and become densely chromatic. 8. Prolonged destaining of the early metaphase chromosomes shows that the chromomeres are still present. Each has divided to form two daughter chromomeres. Between the chromomeres on opposite sides of the chromatid appear connexions, the new chromonema. One of the most exciting plant species is the Titan Arum, Amorphophallus titanum, which can truly be regarded as a flagship species for botanic gardens. Wild populations suffer from an increasing pressure on their natural habitat, but botanic gardens can play an important role in the ex-situ conservation of the species. The cultivation of A. titanum is not easy but it offers an irresistible challenge for any keen horticulturist. The University of Bonn Botanic Gardens (Germany) has more than seventy years of experience in the cultivation of this giant and the purpose of this paper is to help the botanic garden community to achieve success in the cultivation of this fascinating plant.

A regional University in the United States implemented an AQIP (Academic Quality Improvement Program) Action Project with a goal of developing processes for effective leadership communication. An MBA (Masters of Business Administration) class conducted a university-wide communication audit to assist with the AQIP project. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected, analysed and presented to the AQIP Task Force. The audit was a win-win opportunity for the students and broader university community. University leadership learned about communication strengths and opportunities within the organization and received recommendations on ways to strengthen communication in the areas of communication channels, information flow, and feedback. As a result, the Task Force implemented tools and processes to enhance communication within the University. The audit also provided MBA students with an opportunity to connect classroom theory with workplace practice. As a result of this service-learning project, students acquired knowledge about organizational communication, worked collaboratively with University employees and practiced communication skills as they developed and defended decisions and recommendations.
