Purpose The purpose of this paper is to delineate a research agenda to guide future service research investigating the digital transformation of financial service systems through Fintech – disruptive innovations by new market entrants that challenge the position of mainstream financial institutions. Design/methodology/approach Rooted in the philosophical foundations of “use-inspired research,” this paper addresses the managerially and societally relevant phenomenon of Fintech by identifying, and responding to, the individual challenges and problems associated with the digital transformation of financial services. This is accomplished through a computational text-mining approach to analyze the corpus of 1,545 published practitioner articles associated with Fintech, identification of managerial challenges therein and subsequent delineation of a novel research agenda. Findings By connecting managerial challenges relating to Fintech with the service literature, this paper develops a use-inspired research agenda that provides scholarly and managerially relevant research directions (RDs). These pertain to the complexity of digital financial service systems (micro level), orchestration of value co-creation with Fintech (meso level), and the development of elastic infrastructures, models and markets (macro level). Research limitations/implications Fintech is an emerging phenomenon associated with the digital transformation of financial services. However, actual guidelines on how service research related to Fintech could be advanced from a theoretically as well as managerially relevant angle are unavailable to date. Here, the authors address this challenge and provide the field with 18 tangible RDs to advance service theory and practice. Practical implications The purpose of this paper is to guide future academic research addressing managerial challenges associated with Fintech and the digital transformation of financial service. Due to the explicit use-inspired nature of the work, the future research stemming from the agenda that the authors put forward here will be of benefit to decision makers and society more broadly. Originality/value This empirical research contributes to the discourse regarding the role of information and communication technologies in service in general, and the digital transformation on financial services in particular. The in-depth computational text-mining analysis is unbiased, replicable and provides the foundation for a use-inspired research agenda that is subsequently delineated.

Service science views companies as service system entities that interact with other entities to create value. In today's networked value chains competition is no longer among companies, but among networks that may be regarded as service ecologies. Following service science each entity comprises a dynamic configuration of resources and structures, thus a variety of design aspects needs alignment within these ecologies. To manage service ecologies this article suggests to link insights from network management with service science. A multi-dimensional framework consistently describes the organizational aspects of network management among service system entities as well as the required processes to align activities between service system entities and the possible information systems to support network management. The framework emerged from a design-oriented research project based on eleven interviews with managers from financial service providers in Germany and Switzerland.

Purpose The majority of business-to-business companies are working on their digital transformation in sales. Despite enormous transformation efforts, the expected productivity gains are often missing in most companies. Based on empirical research, this paper aims to develop a new market-oriented transformation model. Management implications as well as future research directions are derived for a more focused digital transformation process in sales. Design/methodology/approach Within the exploratory research study, 90 key informants were interviewed to provide better insights in the context of digital transformation in sales. The accuracy of the research results was safeguarded by triangulation. Findings As this research paper will show, the reasons for the missing productivity gains caused by a limited knowledge about the main success factors of digital transformation as well as a lack of understanding of digital transformation as an evolving process. Originality/value Based on the empirical research, a new market-oriented transformation model is developed and management implications as well as future research directions are derived for a more focused digital transformation process in sales.

As corporations are stepping into the new digital transformation age and adopting leading-edge technologies such as cloud, mobile, and big data, it becomes crucial for them to contemplate the risks and rewards of this adoption. At the same time, the new wave of malware attacks is posing a severe impediment in implementing these technologies. This chapter discusses some of the complications, challenges, and issues plaguing current malware analysis and detection techniques. Some of the key challenges discussed are automation, native code, obfuscations, morphing, and anti-reverse engineering. Solutions and recommendations are provided to solve some of these challenges. To stimulate further research in this thriving area, the authors highlight some promising future research directions. The authors believe that this chapter provides an auspicious basis for future researchers who intend to know more about the evolution of malware and will act as a motivation for enhancing the current and developing the new techniques for malware analysis and detection.

This paper focuses on Dubai’s positive attitude toward the digital transformation of the financial sector and the development of fintech due to the growth of financial technology. After a review of the fintech literature, the paper highlights Dubai’s dynamic financial ecosystem, including the diffusion of innovative digital technologies related to fintech. Among the main factors explaining the unstoppable growth of financial technology in Dubai are a flourishing of innovative fintech startups that have revolutionized the financial service sector, a private sector interested in partnering with financial ventures, an appropriate regulatory regime, and updated to the evolution of fintech, and supportive government policies. Regarding Dubai’s post-COVID efforts toward the digital transformation of the financial sector, the paper argues that the emirate’s fintech ecosystem represents a challenging paradigm for the business world.

Relevance. At present, there are significant changes in the modern systems of official publication of patent offices. The paper discusses the concept of digital transformation in relation to official publication systems and the construction of a client-oriented Agency. The new publication requirements include requirements for effective search for information about inventions and utility models, requirements for providing information about changes in legal status, requirements for providing analytical information, and requirements for citation information. Methodology: the research is based on complex and systematic analysis, general scientific methods of cognition-analysis and synthesis, dialectical method, systematization and classification, process and system approaches, as well as the method of comparison. Results. New goals of the publication system and requirements for Electronic publication systems as information service systems are formulated. It is proposed to create and develop new electronic publishing systems based on the use of customer-oriented digital platforms of the service architecture. The main point of contention is that the improvement of electronic publishing systems of patent offices and their transformation into information service systems, with its huge public benefit, can become a negative factor for commercial enterprises that provide search and information services on a paid basis.

PurposeThis paper aims to provide insights regarding the state of the art of digital transformation for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Egypt and propose avenues for future research.Design/methodology/approachA proposed framework for the digitization process in SMEs is developed by providing three layers of working steps toward full automation. The paper also provides an extensive analysis of the main requirements for improving the existing traditional information systems' performance in these enterprises. The challenges of digital transformation and the future research direction are discussed as well.FindingsThis paper provided an overview of the importance of digital transformation in real-life applications. The role of the information systems in building a digitalized information processing environment is covered as well. Also, a framework for the shifting process from the traditional approaches to the digitalized systems is proposed. Besides, the paper overviewed the future research directions related to digital transformation in SMEs, especially in Egypt. These research directions are related to technical challenges during the digital transformation process, such as cybersecurity, big data analytics and multimodality data.Originality/valueDespite the significant governmental and institutions' steps toward full automation and digital transformation, the traditional information systems, infrastructures, and unequipped employees make the digitizing process on-the-fly an open challenge. A technology shift that is not supported by a similar cultural change threatens digital business initiatives and increases the risk of their failure. This paper aims to provide insights regarding the state of the art of digital transformation for SMEs in Egypt and propose avenues for future research.
