Introduction: Research shows that compared to non-Hispanic whites, African Americans (AAs) have poorer sleep quality, lower mean sleep duration, and a higher prevalence of sleep-disordered breathing. AAs also report more frequent exposures to certain stressors over the life course, which may impact physiological processes that may impair sleep. Goal-striving-stress (GSS), the discrepancy between aspiration and achievement, weighted by the subjective probability of success, and the level of disappointment experienced if goals are not reached, may be an important stressor among AA’s that may influence sleep; however this has yet to be explored. The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between GSS and sleep duration and sleep quality in AAs. Hypothesis: We assessed the hypothesis that high (versus low) GSS would be associated with short or long sleep duration and poor sleep quality. Methods: We utilized data from the baseline exam of the Jackson Heart Study (JHS; n=5306), an AA sample of women and men, 35-84 years old. There were a total of 5082 participants in the sample; 63.34% female with a mean age of 55.30 (± 12.75) and mean sleep duration of 6.43 hours (±1.51). The sample was categorized into GSS tertiles: low (n=2121), moderate (n=1716), high (n=1296). Participants self-reported sleep duration (hours) and rated their sleep quality. Sleep duration was categorized as short ( < 6 hours), normal (7 or 8 hours) and long ( > 9 hours). Sleep quality was categorized as high (good/very good/excellent) and low (fair/poor). Logistic regression models were used to obtain odds ratios (OR, 95% confidence interval-CI) to assess the associations of GSS levels with sleep duration and sleep quality categories. Models were adjusted for sex, age, socioeconomic status, health behaviors, discrimination, and health outcomes. Results: Significant results showed that participants who reported high (versus low) GSS had a 29% increased odds [1.29 (1.10, 1.52)] of short (versus normal) sleep after full adjustment. Participants who reported high (versus low) GSS had a 42% increased odds [1.42 (1.20, 1.67)] of low (versus high) sleep quality after full adjustment. Conclusion In conclusion, the deficit between goal aspiration and achievement is associated with short sleep duration and poor sleep quality. Potential interventions should consider the extent to which GSS may contribute to the development of short sleep duration and poor sleep quality.

Abstract Objectives To understand the association between micro and macronutrient intake and sleep variables from the National Health and Nutrition Evaluation Survey (NHANES, 2005–2016). Methods Data analysis was performed using SAS 9.4; regression analysis was used to assess the relationship (p < 0.05) of nutrient intake with sleep variables. All nutrients were individual usual intakes determined using the National Cancer Institute method from food plus supplements; covariates included age, gender, ethnicity, poverty income ration, current smoking status and physical activity level. Individuals 16+ years of age were included in the analysis; pregnant or lactating females and those with unreliable dietary recalls were excluded in the analysis. Seven (7) Sleep variables included in the analysis were short sleep hours (<7 hrs of sleep) and trouble sleeping (NHANES 2005–2016), sleep disorder (NHANES, 2005–2014) and poor sleep quality, insomnia, sleep latency, and use of sleeping pills >5 times in the last month (NHANES 2005–2008). Results In adults (males and females) 19+ years, 32.7% experienced short sleep; 47.3% poor sleep quality; 8.94% a sleep disorder; 37.9% sleep latency; 9.30% used sleeping pills; 15.1% exhibited insomnia; and 27.7% experienced sleep trouble. Within this population, short sleep was significantly (p < 0.05) associated with the greatest number of nutrients; showing an inverse association with magnesium, niacin, vitamin D, calcium, and dietary fiber intake. Across all seven sleep variables, however, magnesium, niacin and vitamin D demonstrated significant (p < 0.05) inverse association within this population. Inverse associations were also found for dietary fiber intake and short sleep and sleep disorder; phosphorus intake and poor sleep quality, sleep latency and sleep pill use; and vitamin K intake and poor sleep quality, sleep disorder, sleep latency and sleep pill use in the gender combined adults 19+ years. Within this population however, there were direct associations for the intakes of protein and vitamin B6 and short sleep, sleep disorder and sleep trouble; for the intakes of sodium and vitamin A and poor sleep quality, sleep latency and sleep pill use; for the intake of vitamin B12 and poor ADL and insomnia; and for the intake of zinc and sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep pill use, poor ADL and insomnia. Among female adults 19+ years, dietary fiber was the only nutrient that showed an inverse association with all seven sleep variables. Conclusions These findings demonstrate the importance of micro and macronutrient intake on numerous sleep variables. Funding Sources This analysis was funded by Pharmavite, LLC.

Background. Empirical findings have indicated that higher institution students experience a higher prevalence of mental distress compared to the general population. Understanding the magnitude and associated factors of mental distress in university students would be helpful to practitioners and policymakers in Ethiopia. The aim of the present study was to examine the prevalence and associated factors of mental distress among Samara university students, Northeast Ethiopia. Methods. Institution based cross-sectional study design was conducted in Samara university from December to June 2018. A simple random sampling technique was employed to select the study participants. Self-Reporting Questionnaire-20 (SRQ-20) was used to measure the mental distress of students. Multivariable logistic regression modeling was used to examine the association between sociodemographic and psychosocial factors with the mental distress of students. Results. The proportion of students with mental distress were found to be 53.2% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 48.0%, 58.0%). Female students were more likely to be mentally distressed compared to male students (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 4.66; 95% CI: 2.81, 7.71). Ever khat use (AOR: 3.09; 95% CI: 1.74, 5.50) and poor sleep quality (AOR: 2.23; 95% CI: 1.12, 3.66) were significantly associated with mental distress of students. Conclusion. Our study indicates that the proportion of mental distress was found to be higher among Samara university students as compared to previously published studies in Ethiopia. Female students, ever khat users and those with poor sleep quality were associated with mental distress. There is a need for evidence-based interventional strategies such as self-help measures, sleep hygiene and peer support, as well as professional mental health services as part of student health services that would be helpful to reduce the burden of mental distress of students.

Introduction: Inadequate sleep duration is a modifiable behaviour linked with body weight, yet limited is known on the role of sleep quality with body weight status among university students. The study aimed to determine sleep quality and its association with body weight status among university students. Methods: A crosssectional study was conducted among 240 university students (24.6% males, 75.4% females) with a mean age of 21.22±1.24 years. Subjects were recruited from four faculties of University Putra Malaysia (UPM). Information on socio-demographic, sleep quality and anthropometric measurements were collected. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality, whereby a summation score from seven components yielded a global score on sleep quality, with higher scores indicating poor sleep quality. Results: Majority of subjects were Malay (79.2%) with a mean body mass index of 22.6kg/m2. A majority (61.3%) had normal body weight, with the prevalences of underweight (UW), overweight (OW), and obesity (OB) at 12.9%, 19.6% and 6.3%, respectively. The mean global PSQI score was 5.76±2.64, with half of the respondents (50.4%) experiencing poor sleep quality. OW-OB experienced poorer sleep quality (6.53±2.79, p=0.004) and longer sleep latency (1.34±0.10, p=0.008) relative to UW-NW. OB subjects had substantially more frequent sleep disturbances compared to non-OB subjects (1.53±0.64, p=0.012). Conclusion: Findings suggest that OW-OB students at university are at a greater risk of having reduced sleep quality with longer sleep latency and frequent sleep disturbances. There is a need for a wellness initiative to reduce the incidence of obesity while fostering healthier sleeping habits among university students.

Abstract: Introduction: Changes in the Sleep/Wake Cycle (SWC) of university students can have consequences on physical, mental and social health. In addition, some behaviors adopted at this stage may be associated with SWC impairment. Objective: Therefore, this study aims to identify which factors of social determinants of health (SDH) are associated with poor sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in university students. Method: This is a cross-sectional study that included 298 university students, aged between 18 and 35 years; 73.2% of the students were females and from the countryside of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Data were collected from the following questionnaires: Health and Sleep, Munich Chronotype Questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Epworth Sleepiness Scale. To assess the association of SDH with poor sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness, Poisson Regression with robust variance was performed. Result: The prevalence of poor sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness among the university students was 79.2% and 51.3%, respectively. Between the intermediate determinants of health, a higher prevalence rate of poor sleep quality was observed in students who reported health problems in the previous month (18.4%), smoked (23.5%), drank stimulating beverages close to bedtime (25.8%) and those who used electronic devices before bedtime during the week (18.4%) when compared to those who did not have these behaviors. Regarding excessive daytime sleepiness, students who justified bedtime during the week and wake-up time at the weekend because of the academic demand showed, respectively, 27% and 34% lower prevalence of EDS than the group that did not have these behaviors. Conclusions: The high prevalence of poor sleep quality and EDS observed among university students was associated to biological factors and most of them, behavioral factors.
