Abstract In this work, a user-friendly chitin-based adsorbent (CT-PmPD) was synthesized by in-situ polymerization of m-phenylenediamine on chitin bead, which could effectively remove Cr(VI) from water. The structure and morphology of the CT-PmPD were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, zeta potential and XPS. Specifically, the effect of adsorbed dosage, pH, contact time, adsorption temperature and coexisting salt on the adsorption of Cr(VI) were studied. Besides, the adsorption mechanism of CT-PmPD toward Cr(VI) were also analyzed. Consequenlty, CT-PmPD exhibited a monolayer adsorption and the Langmuir model fitted a Cr(VI) adsorption capacity reaching 185.4 mg/g at 298 K. The high adsorption capacity was attributed to the abundant amino groups of CT-PmPD, which could be protonated to boost the electrostatic attraction of Cr(VI) oxyanions, thus providing electron to reduce Cr(VI). Additionally, the CT-PmPD revealed a good regeneration and reusability capacity, maintaining most of its adsorption capacity even after five cycles of adsorption-desorption. This high adsorption capacity and excellent regeneration performance highlighted the great potential of CT-PmPD for the removal of Cr(VI).

A facile pathway has been developed to synthesize polyethylenimine-modified mesoporous hybrid materials with highly efficient CO2 capturer. It is the special feature of this pathway that there are no surfactants introduced and the amine guest can be dispersed within the channels of the silica materials during the hydrolysis and polycondensation process. The obtained materials exhibit high specific surface areas, high porosity and high CO2 uptake. The amount of polyethylenimine (PEI) has important effect on the surface area, pore size and CO2 adsorption capacity of the adsorbents. For the sample containing 50 wt% PEI, the adsorbent exhibits a high adsorption capacity of 186.6 mg/g-PEI, and in situ FTIR show that CO2 is sorbed on amine sites through the formation of alkylammonium carbamates. The adsorbed CO2 could be desorbed completely from the sample at 150 °C. Moreover, the adsorbents show a stable cyclic adsorption-desorption performance.

Composite adsorption materials combine the advantages of various adsorptive materials and compensate for the defects of single adsorbents. Magnetic montmorillonite (MMMT) shows good adsorption properties for Pb(II). In order to further improve the adsorption properties of MMMT, in this work, Zn-BDC, a kind of metal–organic framework (MOF), was modified onto the surface of MMMT by in situ polymerization. The composite material MMMT@Zn-BDC was characterized by Zetasizer, SEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD, VSM, and XPS. The influence of adsorption conditions on the adsorption capacity of MMMT@Zn-BDC for Pb(II) was examined, including the adsorbent dosage, pH of Pb(II) solution, initial concentration of Pb(II), and the temperature and adsorption time. Also, the adsorption mechanism was studied. The results of this study show that MMMT@Zn-BDC adsorbs Pb(II) via chemisorption. In addition, MMMT@Zn-BDC exhibits good potential for adsorbing Pb(II), including its high adsorption capacity (724.64 mg/g) and good recyclability.

A new strategy of preparing the efficient CO2 adsorbent without further molding is reported in this article. This novel shaped CO2 capturer is obtained by coating amine on the SBA-15 monolith with a specific 3D net-linked morphology that favors the accessibility of amine guest in the channel. The resulting composites are characterized with XRD, N2 adsorption, SEM and TEM techniques, and their adsorptive ability is assessed with CO2-TPD test, offering a high adsorption capacity of 144 mg g-1and stable cyclic adsorption-desorption performance for potential application.

Steamed Hoof Powder (SHP), size < 53μ, was observed to have high adsorption capacity for Hg(II) with >95% removal from a solution containing 100 mg/L of Hg(II) with only 0.1% (W/V) concentration of SHP. The SHP has good settling properties and gives clear and odour free effluent. Studies indicate that pH values between 2 and 10 have no effect on the adsorption of Hg(II) on SHP. Light metal ions like Na+, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ up to concentrations of 500 mg/L and heavy metals like Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Pb2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, Cr3+, Cr6+, Fe2+ and Fe3+ up to concentrations of 100 mg/L do not interfere with the adsorption process. Anions like sulphate, acetate and phosphate up to concentrations of 200 mg/L do not interfere. Chloride interferes in the adsorption process when Hg(II) concentration is above 9.7 mg/L. The adsorption equilibrium was established within two hours. Studies indicate that adsorption occurs on the surface sites of the adsorbent.

Background: Modified bio-based adsorbents from plant sources can be used for pollution remediation by adsorption due to their low cost and availability in large quantities. Objective: In this study, the competitive biosorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II) by Micropogonias undulates functionalised fish scales (FFS) was conducted. The functionalisation was done by wet impregnation with Fe2+. Method: The biosorbent was characterised by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and Branueur–Emmett–Teller (BET) analyses. Results: The major constituents in the FFS were calcium and phosphorus from the collagen and apatite on the scales. Optimum removal efficiency for both metals was >99% at 10 g/l dosage. It was observed that the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo second order kinetics model were the best fit for the experimental data. The monolayer adsorption capacity of FFS for Pb(II) and Cu(II) was observed to be 96.15 mg/g and 100 mg/g respectively. Conclusion: The study revealed that the competitive biosorption of heavy metals can be achieved (at a good adsorption capacity) using functionalised Micropogonias undulates fish scales.

The development of excellent drug adsorbents and clarifying the interaction mechanisms between adsorbents and adsorbates are greatly desired for a clean environment. Herein, we report that a reduced graphene oxide modified sheeted polyphosphazene (rGO/poly (cyclotriphosphazene-co-4,4′-sulfonyldiphenol)) defined as PZS on rGO was used to remove the tetracycline (TC) drug from an aqueous solution. Compared to PZS microspheres, the adsorption capacity of sheeted PZS@rGO exhibited a high adsorption capacity of 496 mg/g. The adsorption equilibrium data well obeyed the Langmuir isotherm model, and the kinetics isotherm was fitted to the pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic analysis showed that the adsorption of TC was an exothermic, spontaneous process. Furthermore, we highlighted the importance of the surface modification of PZS by the introduction of rGO, which tremendously increased the surface area necessary for high adsorption. Along with high surface area, electrostatic attractions, H-bonding, π-π stacking and Lewis acid-base interactions were involved in the high adsorption capacity of PZS@rGO. Furthermore, we also proposed the mechanism of TC adsorption via PZS@rGO.
