Design process has its own structure which is affected by many aspects. Moreover, there are many tools that contribute in this multidimensional process. Within the framework of this chapter, the tectonics is suggested as a directive tool through the design process. Istanbul Technical University Interior Design students' second year studio, where tectonics was used as a spatial perception tool, was examined. The main title of the studio was festival space design, where festivals were discussed as a performance scene for urban interiors. The main idea of suggested method is to consider environmental aspects in different scales and project those findings to tectonics. The main purpose of this project is to create a new perspective to interior design studio approach. The subject of the project was shaped within the framework of testing that interior architecture is not independent from architectural elements contextually and phenomenologically and that environmental decisions and architectural tectonics can be used as a data to put forth the new ideas for interior design methodology.

With the construction of a large number of affordable housing and the development of green buildings, the design of green affordable housing has become a new concern and research topic in China’s residential architectural design, and the interior design of affordable housing has become a top priority. This article takes Changchun city as an example, through the research of affordable housing in Changchun, visit, found the main problems existing in the status quo, in view of the problems put forward housing interior space design optimization principle, and according to the design principles of indoor space scale, provides a good green indoor living environment for green residential tenants in cold areas.

The research explored exhibition space designs, particularly the interior design elements such as circulation, lighting, and display techniques to find out whether the design elements corresponded the design principles and to find out which museum had the most ideal exhibition design that was able to deliver exhibition messages to the audience. The research applied qualitative method with case study approach in three museums in Jakarta, those were National Museums, Bank of Indonesia museum, and museum of Fine Art and Ceramic as case studies and qualitative data collecting methods through observations to get real-settings information. Data analysis and comparison of various interior elements shows that from the three case studies only Bank of Indonesia Museum has an integrated exhibition space using various interior elements; circulation and lighting design as well as display technique that support the success of a museum to deliver exhibition messages to their visitor. It can stimulate visitors senses visually, auditory, and kinetic.

A sizeable literature exists on the use of frequentist power analysis in the null-hypothesis significance testing (NHST) paradigm to facilitate the design of informative experiments. In contrast, there is almost no literature that discusses the design of experiments when Bayes factors (BFs) are used as a measure of evidence. Here we explore Bayes Factor Design Analysis (BFDA) as a useful tool to design studies for maximum efficiency and informativeness. We elaborate on three possible BF designs, (a) a fixed-n design, (b) an open-ended Sequential Bayes Factor (SBF) design, where researchers can test after each participant and can stop data collection whenever there is strong evidence for either H1 or H0, and (c) a modified SBF design that defines a maximal sample size where data collection is stopped regardless of the current state of evidence. We demonstrate how the properties of each design (i.e., expected strength of evi- dence, expected sample size, expected probability of misleading evidence, expected probability of weak evidence) can be evaluated using Monte Carlo simulations and equip researchers with the necessary information to compute their own Bayesian design analyses.

<p>Modern interior design has reached a plateau. Due to the anaesthesia brought about by mass information sharing and the dominance of the image, very little innovation has occurred, stylistically as many designers simply seek to regurgitate each other’s designs instead of treading new ground. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the modern day office; as a program that is deliberately aimed towards productivity and profit, office design has been streamlined to achieve these ends often leading to unpleasant working environments. The study of the Dada movement and one of its key practitioners, Marcel Duchamp, led to a question regarding the possible architectural implications that his work and his subversive manner of working has to offer and if it have any relevance in contemporary practice.  This thesis proposes an alternative to the modern office interior through a detailed investigation into the theory and practices of Marcel Duchamp. It aims to further examine the architectural implications of his work through in depth analysis of his methods using assemblage, as well as his theoretical investigations in perspective and representation. Through these investigations I hope to develop a new design language that simultaneously critiques the modern office interior as well as furthering the research already done into the Dada movement and Architecture.</p>

Narration or story telling is proposed as a process which enables researchers in interior design/architecture to deal with the crux of environmental design - experience and relationships. This approach addresses the limitations of more superficial understandings of the built environment represented by discussions of form or appearance. Narration generally occurs as written or verbal accounts, but it may also involve graphical representations, stained glass, movement, dance, or music (Barthes: 1979). How narrative inquiry is of value in the study of interior architecture, and consequently for research into the built environment is discussed in this paper with specific attention to identifying how these concepts may be applicable for research focusing on environmental interpretation and the construction of meaning.

The City

This Chapter glances at the shifting landscape of disciplines and professions, with particular focus towards “Interior Design.” In spite of trends and increasing examples of the erosion and overlapping of disciplinary and professional boundaries, ironically or not, there remains the need for some sort of definition; in other words, there needs to be a body of knowledge and skills defined and practiced. This is especially relevant in a world of inter-, multi-, and trans-disciplinary work and comprehensive creative practices. After a very quick look at “Environmental Design” – or the design of environments and experiences – the paper spends a bit more time examining possible core aspects of Interior Design while promoting its expanded field. An articulated interior urbanism creates clear areas of contribution from the interior designers within the city. Additionally, the chapter explores the curricular use of intensive design workshops with a singular focus of the student's attention; selected student work from Politecnico di Milano is included.
