Thermal imaging is a promising technology in the medical field. Recent developments in low-cost infrared (IR) sensors, compatible with smartphones, provide competitive advantages for home-monitoring applications. However, these sensors present reduced capabilities compared to more expensive high-end devices. In this work, the characterization of thermal cameras is described and carried out. This characterization includes non-uniformity (NU) effects and correction as well as the thermal cameras’ dependence on room temperature, noise-equivalent temperature difference (NETD), and response curve stability with temperature. Results show that low-cost thermal cameras offer good performance, especially when used in temperature-controlled environments, providing evidence of the suitability of such sensors for medical applications, particularly in the assessment of diabetic foot ulcers on which we focused this study.

AbstractThe functional properties of Shape Memory Alloys (SMA's) are used succesfully at present in a variety of industrial and medical applications. The use of these materials in smart structures is now emerging in the field of aeronautic/space technology. Many applications require higher operating temperatures than available to date, or higher cooling rates and/or a higher number of cycles. For this purpose the properties and fabricability of commercial alloys as Ni-Ti-(X), Cu-Al-Ni or Cu-Zn-Al are being adjusted and improved. Other feasible alloys are being developed. The research and development is directed towards the control of the stress, strain, temperature and time dependence of shape memory properties for a stable in-service behaviour. In this paper the various approaches taken up in recent years by academic and industrial laboratories for developing high temperature SMA's are reviewed.

With recent developments in the wireless networks field, new and innovative medical applications based on this technology are being developed in the research as well as commercial sectors. This trend has just started and the paper predict wireless networks are going to become an integral part of medical solutions due to its benefits in cutting down healthcare costs and increasing accessibility for patients as well as increasing the efficiency of the healthcare professionals. Same papers give some background on applications of wireless networks in the medical field and discuss the issue and challenges. It also tried to identify some of the standards in use. Another contribution due to this paper is the identification of innovative medical applications of wireless networks developed or currently being developed in the research and business sectors and also talk about the future trends in this field.

Biodegradable thermogelling polymers can be applied in biomedical areas requiring sustained drug release capabilities, for gene delivery and for tissue engineering. As injectable materials, thermogels can be implanted in the human body with minimal surgical intervention. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the recent developments in this field and highlights the most recent research papers. From the current research literature, we look toward the future and provide a broad outlook toward the prospective trends in this field.
