The use of renewable materials as a source of nutrients, besides being a solution of interest for waste disposal, may also be an effective way to reduce the high costs of inputs needed for the production of forestry seedlings. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the growth of Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell. Brenan) (angico branco) cultivated in organic substrates. A randomized block design was adopted and the treatments were distributed in a 3 × 5 factorial scheme, with three organic residues: decomposed burity (moriche palm) stem, carnaúba straw and organic compost mixed with the soil in four percentages: 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% of the composition of substrate and a control treatment with soil only, without incorporating the organic residue, with six repetitions. Ninety days after emergence, the seedlings were collected to determine the growth parameters: stem diameter (SD), height (H), of the following indexes: H/D, leaf number (LN), total chlorophyll (T), leaf area (LA), dry mass of the aerial part (DMAP), dry mass of roots (DMR), total dry mass (TDM) H/DMAP: DMAP/DMR, and Dickson Quality Index (DQI). The treatments that contained 60% and 80% of organic compost presented the best responses. It is concluded that the production of angico branco seedlings cultivated with substrate with the addition of 80:20 (organic compost: soil) presented the best results and was technically feasible according to the characteristics and indexes analyzed.

ABSTRACT The Azospirillum brasilense inoculation is usually carried out via seed. However, this bacterium presents passive penetration in the plant, what makes it possible to inoculate the crops using other methods. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of A. brasilense inoculation methods on the emergence and initial growth of corn and sorghum, under greenhouse conditions. A randomized block design, with four replications, in a 4 x 2 factorial scheme, was used. The first factor consisted of a control treatment (without inoculation) and three inoculation methods: via seed, via sowing furrow and via leaf spray. The second factor was composed by two hybrids of corn and two of sorghum. The application of A. brasilense to the seed can reduce the emergence percentage and the emergence speed index of corn seedlings, depending on the genotype, but its application does not influence the initial growth of the plants. The A. brasilense inoculation via seed and via sowing furrow can reduce the emergence and increase the mean emergence time of sorghum seedlings, depending on the genotype. The A. brasilense inoculation via seed results in an increase in the dry mass of the root system of sorghum plants.

Abstract: Some desiccation techniques for harvesting wheat may affect seed quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different desiccant herbicides applied to the wheat crop and their effects on the production and seed quality. The experiment was conducted with cultivar COODETEC 150 (CD 150) in two sites in Palotina (Paraná state, Brazil) with a randomized block design consisting of 7 treatments (desiccation herbicides) and 4 replications. Desiccation was realized when 50% of the plants were in stage 80 with seeds in powdery or mass consistency. The variables analyzed were percentage of moisture content after harvest, Yield, hectoliter weight, mass of 100 seeds, vigor, germination, fresh mass of seedlings, dry mass of seedlings and root length. The herbicides carfentrazone-ethyl and clethodim were the ones that promoted greatest reduction in vigor. The herbicide paraquat caused reduction in seedling length. There was a reduction in the mass of 100 seeds for glufosinate-ammonium, clethodim, diquat and carfentrazone-ethyl. Glufosinate-ammonium, paraquat, glyphosate, clethodim and diquat caused reduction in yield. Desiccation of Cultivar CD 150 at stage 80 is not recommended, since plant Yield and physiological seed parameters were adversely affected by herbicides.

ABSTRACT Okra, Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench, is a vegetable with annual fruit native to hot regions of Africa, well adapted to the conditions of the Northeast and Southeast regions of Brazil, where it is widely used by small farmers. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of mineral and organic fertilization on the production and quality of okra fruits. The experiment was conducted in randomized block design, with three replicates and eleven treatments defined according to a Baconian matrix. Treatments consisted of doses of N (0, 100, 200 and 300 kg ha-1), P (0, 100, 200 and 300 kg ha-1) and K (0, 80, 160 and 240 kg ha-1), as well as absence and presence of organic compost (30 t ha-1). The following parameters were evaluated: plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, production of fruits plant-1, number of fruits plant-1, fruit length and diameter and fruit quality (pH, soluble solids, titratable acidity, vitamin C and electrical conductivity). The crop is demanding in terms of K and N fertilizations, with increments of 15.8 and 36% in the mean number and diameter of fruits, respectively. Organic fertilization did not influence the vegetative growth of okra, but was beneficial to the production of fruits with higher vitamin C content, 52% higher than the contents found in fruits produced without such input.

Plant lodging in wheat has been controlled through growth retardants. However, there is lack of information on the effect of these products on the physiological quality of seeds. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of wheat seeds obtained under different rates and application times of three growth retardants. The trial was carried out in Viçosa-MG, from May to September 2005, in a factorial and hierarchical scheme, in randomized block design with four replications and a control treatment. The treatments consisted of 500, 1000 and 1500g ha-1 of chlormequat; 40, 80 and 120g ha-1 of paclobutrazol and 62.5, 125 and 187.5g ha-1 of trinexapac-ethyl applied at the 6 or 8 growth stage based on the scale of Feeks and Large, and a control treatment without growth retardant application. Leaf application of growth retardants as chlormequat, paclobutrazol and trinexapac-ethyl did not affect the germination and vigor of wheat seeds.

ABSTRACT The experiment was conducted in (Integrated Agroecological Production System in Seropedica-RJ) Sistema Integrado de Produção Agroecológica (SIPA), Seropédica-RJ, to evaluate the effect of two maize populations in relation to baby corn productivity and shoot mass, to determine the contribution of pre-cultivated maize, green velvet and organic topdressing fertilization in the agronomic performance of cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata). The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks with three treatments (maize population of 100,000 and 200,000 plants ha-1 and green velvet at 100,000 plants ha-1) and eight replicates. After that, cabbage was transplanted in the straw of these species, adopting a randomized block design allocated in split plots, totalizing six treatments, being three pre-cultivation practices and two organic topdressing fertilization doses (with or without 50 g fermented organic compost per planting hole). Considering “baby corn” productivity, no differences were observed compared to maize populations, with an average productivity of 822.5 kg ha-1. Green velvet pre-cultivation obtained the highest shoot dry mass (8.4 t ha-1). Cabbage crop was improved by green velvet pre-cultivation, reaching 60.7 t ha-1 and organic topdressing fertilization, reaching 60.4 t ha-1; however, in the presence of green velvet straw, topdressing fertilization did not promote additional yield benefit of this crop. Thus, we noticed that green manure using green velvet increased cabbage productivity, submitted to organic management, when compared to maize pre-cultivation, making it able to replace organic topdressing fertilization.

Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is considered one of the most important cereals, such as maize, rice and wheat, due to its multiplicity of usage, as much for human consumption as for feed. The Nitrogen is one of the main nutrients that influences the quality and productivity of barley seeds because it participates in numerous metabolic routes. It is a limiting factor of the production, the lack or the excess can bring consequence to the culture. In this manner, the present study aims to evaluate the influence of different nitrogen doses on the physiologic quality and biochemical characters of brewing barley seeds produced in two growing environments. The experiment was conducted in the 2017 crop season, in a randomized block design, organized in a factorial scheme, being 2 cultivation environment × 2 brewing barley cultivars × 4 nitrogen doses, disposed in four replicates. The physiological quality of the seeds was evaluated by germination, first counting of germination, accelerated aging, field emergence, shoot and root length, dry mass of shoot and root of seedlings, electrical conductivity (3, 6 and 24 hours) and isoenzymes. The growing environment promotes differences in the barley seeds physiologic quality. The nitrogen fertilizing, at dose of 120 kg ha-1, results in superiority in the physiologic quality of seeds. The cultivar BRS Cauê in both environments presented higher vigor. The nitrogen fertilizing alters the isoenzymatic expression of barley seedlings, creating variation in the bands intensity, at different nitrogen doses.

It was evaluated the effects of different types of mulching of soil in the cultivation of crisphead lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), cultivar “Lucy Brown”, in the spring period, on weed control, soil temperature and productivity. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with four treatments and five replications in plots of 14.0m2. The following coverages were studied: Pennisetum glaucum L., Avena strigosa, Brachiaria ruziziensis, plus the control treatment (soil without mulching). The use of mulching of soil, P. glaucum and B. ruziziensis, proved to be a beneficial practice, reducing the soil temperature by up to 5ºC. There was a lower incidence of weeds with the use of the P. glaucum and A. strigosa coverages. The use of mulch did not provide a significant gain in productivity, however, there was a gain regarding the quality of the product, since the coverage with P. glaucum provided an increase in the size of the head (fresh mass of the commercial head).

Studies in vegetables show that fertilization influences seed production positively, however, when the quality of the seeds is analyzed, the results are mostly inconsistent. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of castor bean cake (CBC) dose splitting in top-dressing application on the production and quality of zucchini organic seeds, as well as its effect on the macronutrient content of fruits and seeds. The experimental design was a randomized block design and four replications. There were 13 treatments with four doses of CBC in top-dressing (1.7, 3.4, 5.1 and 6.8 t ha-1) per three applications (33.3-33.3-33.3%, 50-50% and 33-50-17%) and the control treatment without any kind of top-dressing fertilization. The study evaluated the number of ripe fruits per plant, the production (number and mass) of seeds per fruit and per plant, the mass of one hundred seeds, seed germination, first germination count, and macronutrient content in the diagnosis leaf, in mature fruits (without seeds) and seeds. The number of ripe fruits per plant was not affected by the CBC doses in top-dressing, neither by the splitting of the applications. It was observed that the number of seeds per fruit, mass of seeds per fruit and mass of seeds per plant showed quadratic behavior. Regarding seed quality, only the 1.7; 3.4 and 5.1 t ha-1 doses produced seed with superior quality than the other doses. In conclusion, the CBC doses increased the number of seeds per fruit, mass of seeds per fruit and per plant up to the 4.5t ha-1 dose, approximately.

ABSTRACT Nitrogen (N) is the second most accumulated nutrient in rocket. This nutrient greatly affects growth, productivity and quality of the vegetable. Rocket is the second most widely grown leafy vegetable in hydroponic system; however, no studies on how N concentration in nutrient solution affects this crop can be found in literature. We studied four concentrations (79.2; 118.8; 158.4 and 237.6 mg L-1 of N) in a randomized block design with five replicates. Maximum number of leaves, leaf area, dry mass and productivity of rocket cv. ‘Folha larga’ were obtained with the highest N concentration. The rocket quality, evaluated by the nitrate content, was maximum with 210.2 mg L-1 of N and its value in the concentration which maximized productivity is in the acceptable range for vegetables; so, it is recommended to grow rocket with 237.6 mg L-1 of N in the nutrient solution.
