In today’s modern world marked by globalisation there are great demands for global interaction which stresses the need for English language. The aim of this paper is to recognise the importance of students’ motivation towards learning English for Specific Purposes, i.e. Medical English. In order to determine students’ preferred motivational orientation, a total number of 242 students of medical and healthcare professions were involved in the present study. The results of the principal component analysis of the questionnaire survey showed a three-factor solution with Instrumental, Integrative and Personal Motivation as subscales. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of the subscales indicated high internal consistency. The results indicated that participants in our sample, students of medical and healthcare studies, were more integratively motivated. The participants, who self-assessed their English language knowledge as better, had also greater motivation towards learning the language.

The contextualization of materials in the context of teaching English for specific purposes (ESP) is a prerequisite to gain maximum input of language knowledge. The present study sheds some light on the practice of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach in English for accounting course. This study involved 38 Indonesian ESP students majoring in accounting of a public university in Surakarta Indonesia as the participants. Pre-experimental research design was conducted in eight meeting during the course, including the administration of vocabulary test to examine the participants’ score in pre-test and post-test. A focus group discussion (FGD) was also carried out to reveal the students’ perception about the practice of CLIL approach in English for accounting course. The results depicted that there was a significant difference on the participants’ vocabulary scores between the pre-test and the post-test. It was also portrayed that the participants positively perceived the CLIL practice in their class. The results of this study contribute to providing fruitful insights for teachers and future researchers about CLIL practice in English language teaching, specifically in the context of teaching English for specific purposes.

The chapter explores the way English-language etiquette books from the nineteenth century prescribe accepted behavior for upwardly mobile members of the bourgeoisie. This advice extended to social events known today as “salons” that were conducted in the domestic drawing room or parlor, where guests would perform musical selections for the enjoyment of other guests. The audience for such informal music making was expected to listen attentively, in keeping with the (self-) disciplining of the bourgeois body that such regulations represented in the nineteenth century. Yet even as the modern world became noisier and aurally more confusing, so, too, did contemporary social events, which led authors to become stricter in their disciplining of the audience at these drawing room performances. Nevertheless, hosts and guests could not avoid the growing “crisis of attention” pervading this mode of entertainment, which would lead to the modern habit of inattentive listening.

Background: The Podiatric Health Questionnaire (PHQ) is a health-related questionnaire consisting of six questions designed for measuring foot health status. To date, the PHQ has only been validated in the English-language version. Thus, this study aimed to perform the Spanish translation and test–retest procedures of the PHQ (PHQ-S). Method: The forward/backward translation and test–retest reliability methods were applied from English to Spanish languages. Regarding the total score for each domain, internal consistency and reliability were determined by the Cronbach α and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) with a confidence interval (CI) of 95%. Results: High internal consistency was shown for the six domains: (1) walking with a Cronbach α of 0.97; (2) hygiene and nail care with 0.93 and 093, respectively; (3) foot pain with 0.91; (4) worry and concern domain with 0.904; (5) quality of life with 0.87; and (6) the self-perception of how their feet are feeling measured by a visual analogic scale with 0.92. Excellent test–retest reliability (ICC = 0.99 (95% CI = 0.96–0.98)) was shown for the total score. Conclusions: The PHQ-S was shown to be a valid and reliable tool for an acceptable use in the Spanish population.

Bilingual indigenous students who attend public schools around the country are to develop English language skills as part of the suggested curriculum created by the Colombian Ministry of Education. This is the case of the Embera Chamí students in Florencia, Caquetá whose conditions for learning English differ from those of monolingual Spanish students. The purpose of this study is to analyze the difficulties and the advantages of learning English through task- and project-based learning in bilingual indigenous students. The analysis of the study was developed through the method of systematization of experience. Results suggest that the two learning approaches enhanced indigenous students’ speaking skills and facilitated vocabulary recognition. However, the students mentioned being more interesting in learning English for specific purposes.

Abstract The increasing role of English in this era of globalization seems to force us to recognize that English has a great impact on all aspects of life, so learning the English language is a must. Previously, studying English at Indonesian universities was limited to General English or English General Purposes, which became general subjects. However, over time, learning English has been developed specifically for English for Specific Purposes. This study is intended to show how the use of English learning at universities, especially in vocational education, works. In this study, the literature study was chosen as the research method. The literature study shows that the use of General English and English for Specific Purposes in higher education is very different. Where there is no special learning material for teaching General English. The learning material usually contains general knowledge of English. Unlike English for Specific Purposes, where teaching English for Specific Purposes requires special materials that are tailored to the needs of students depending on the subject. Sebelumnya di Indonesia, pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di perguruan tinggi hanya sebatas General English atau English for General Purposes yang menjadi mata kuliah umum, namun seiring berjalannya waktu pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dikembangkan lagi secara khusus dalam mata kuliah English for Specific Purposes. Studi ini memiliki tujuan untuk melihat bagaimana penerapan kedua pembelajaran bahasa Inggris tersebut di perguruan tinggi khususnya pada pendidikan vokasi. Studi pustaka dipilih sebagai metode penelitian dalam studi ini. Dari studi kepustakaan tersebut diperoleh hasil bahwa penerapan General English dan English for Specific Purposes di perguruan tinggi sangatlah berbeda antara keduanya. Dimana tidak ada materi pembelajaran khusus terhadap pengajaran General English. Materi pembelajaran biasanya berisikan pengetahuan umum tentang bahasa Inggris. Beda halnya dengan English for Specific Purposes, dimana dalam pengajaran English for Specific Purpose, dibutuhkan materi khusus yang disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan dari mahasiswa sesuai dengan bidang yang mereka ambil. With a mission to enhance the quality of EFL teachers, the Regional English Language Office (RELO) of the U.S. Embassy in Indonesia has conducted a pre-service teacher camp where practical teaching innovations are taught alongside reflective practices and the development of social and intercultural competences. This paper aims to examine how the participants, who are pre-service language teachers, perceived their professional identity as potential EFL educators after attending Camp EPIC and to what extent the program contributed to this process of professional identity formation. The study employed a mixed-methods survey where a total of 45 participants of Camp EPIC 2018 were purposively selected. They were asked to provide descriptions of themselves as teachers before and after the teacher camp, which were then analysed qualitatively using thematic analysis. As for the quantitative data, a set of thirty-three Likert-scale items were examined using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The triangulated data indicated that the participants’ perception was positively altered after the camp. While some mentioned that they were more resourceful and creative with teaching ideas, others showed a higher level of self-efficacy concerning their competence. These changes could be attributed to four major features of the camp: reflection, feedback, resource exploitation, and collaboration.

Mozart in the Jungle is a popular TV show in four seasons, which premiered in December 2014 from Amazon Studios. This series is the first of its type in the English language: focusing on classical music and the life of classical musicians as its topic. In this series, the concept of classical music applies to the world of artistic music from the baroque period to the 20th century music, and to institutions that in the modern world represent artistic music, people who are practice this music and the target group for which it is intended. Thus, Mozart in the Jungle indicates that world of artistic music exists in the way of the artworld, if we understand this term according to theoretician Arthur Danto. In such a way, we are discussing the concept of classical music, which is not just some abstract concept. On the contrary, it implies an actual institution of classical music starting from the infrastructure of the institution, people who are producing it, to the building itself of that institution.
