The main objective of this study was to examine the effects of selected factors on retention, graduation, and timely bachelor's degree completion at The University of Iowa. An additional purpose was to identify the stage-varying effects of selected variables. Reflecting the sequential nature of bachelor's degree completion, this study focused on three stages of students' progress to graduation: 1) dropout vs. persistence in the first year, 2) graduation vs. failure to graduate among first year persisters, and 3) graduation in four years or less vs. graduation in five years or more. We found that college academic performance, pre-matriculation academic achievement, and college major were the most important variables in explaining success at The University of Iowa. We also found fairly consistent results across the three models.

This study examined the distribution of financial aid among financially dependent four-year college students and the effectiveness of different types of financial aid in promoting student persistence and timely bachelor’s degree attainment. The findings of descriptive statistical and logistic regression analyses using the NCES Beginning Postsecondary Students (1990-94) data show that subsidized loans taken in the first year of college have a positive effect on persistence. The first-year distribution of aid does not close the income gap in bachelor’s degree attainment. Living on campus and first-year grade point average are the most important predictors of timely degree completion.

The article analyses the higher educational market in the sphere of socio-economic training in Novosibirsk region. The authors identify and analyze the factors affecting the enrollment of the first year students on a contract basis, and determine the market share of the leading universities in Novosibirsk region in socio-economic areas of training for full-time studies in bachelor's programs. The authors have analyzed the information of admission commissions of the leading universities in Novosibirsk region, obtained from their sites. Based on this information they determine the factors affecting the figures of enrolling on the commercial form of training: the minimum score of USE determined by each university for entry, the availability of state-funded place, the training cost, the availability of a hostel and the development of the social infrastructure of the university, the university marketing strategy effectiveness. It is noted that the existing market of educational services is characterized by a transition from quantitative indicators of recruitment of students to financial ones that affect the stability of the educational organization. The authors define the market shares, which are occupied by the largest higher educational institutions of the region. It is established that the reduction in the number of budget places and the increase in the number of places on a contract basis is one of the features of the educational services market. The work establishes and analyzes the statistical dependence between the number applicants and the number of first year students. The modern educational market forces the universities to develop the system of vocational guidance activities: open days, Olympiads for schoolchildren on the site of the university, vocational guidance meetings in schools, excursions to the university, sports competitions between schoolchildren and students, the preparation of schoolchildren for Olympiads by the teachers of the university, the e-learning system for schoolchildren, the answers the questions of entrants in social networks. Without such vocational guidance activities the enrollment of students on a contract basis becomes extremely difficult. The article examines the market of educational services in socio-economic areas of training under bachelor's programs, and allocates the factors influencing its formation.

This paper attempts to explore the students' enrolment trends in Dhankuta Multiple Campus. The discipline of geography has offered in Bachelor's degree level at the Faculties of Education (FoE), and Humanities, and Social Sciences (FoHSS) since 1970. This paper is based on the review of relevant materials collected from the official records of the Dhankuta Multiple Campus. The data covers 25 years (1996-2020) of student enrolment in the Bachelor's first year of both faculties. Students' enrolment data reveals that the student enrolment rate in the FoHSS seems to be the same while fluctuations observed in the FoE. The enrolment rate in the FoE reached its climax in 2005, and it has gradually declined after 2010. The FoE offered a single-subject specialization policy in the Bachelors of Degree Program, phasing out the proficiency certificate level from the university; the declining number of feeder schools offering geography and the state economic policies are responsible factors to deterioration the student enrolment. Therefore, the concerned authorities need to take appropriate steps to increase student enrolment.

Many higher education institutions use a policy for academic dismissal. In the Netherlands, the academic dismissal policy is such that students with fewer credits than a certain threshold after their first year, are expelled. This article employs the beta-binomial model to assess whether this method succeeds in filtering those who have potential from those who do not and what the optimal level of the threshold is. The model considers 13,234 students in three consecutive cohorts from around fifty different bachelor's degree programmes at the University of Groningen. We found that demanding 45 out of 60 credits constitutes a fair threshold for this institution. Although a strict dismissal policy has only a minor effect on cohorts, it can have a major effect on specific groups of students. The software employed here is made available.

Introduction: Musculoskeletal symptoms of the upper extremities are common among dental workers due to exposure to risk factors including repetition, forceful exertions of the hand, and awkward wrist postures.  As dental students learn new skills and procedures during dental school, they experience a gradually increasing exposure to these risk factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of hand and wrist musculoskeletal symptoms (MSS) among dental students of the University of Iowa. Methods: Thirty-five first year students and thirty-nine fourth year students (N=74) were asked to complete two questionnaires. Results: The prevalence of moderate/severe MSS of the dominant hand such as numbness, tingling and soreness among first year students was 0, 6 and 20% respectively compared to 18, 15 and 36% of the fourth year students. Conclusions: In this relatively small sample, MSS of the dominant hand were more common among fourth year dental students when compared to first year students.
