Data from 1991 to 2017, pertaining to early performance traits was collected from 659 Murrah buffaloes, sired by 188 bulls, maintained at Directorate of Livestock Farms, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, Punjab. Least squares means and effect on non-genetic factors were evaluated for economic traits. Moderate heritability estimates of 0.217 ± 0.00, 0.231 ± 0.00, 0.260 ± 0.046 were calculated for first calving interval (FCI), First 305 day milk yield (F305MY) and first peak yield (FPY) respectively and low heritability values of 0.015± 0.025 and 0.043 ± 0.03 were estimated for age at first calving (AFC) and first lactation length (FLL) respectively. The phenotypic and genetic correlation of AFC was found to be positive with FLL and FCI and negative with F305MY and FPY. Although the production efficiency traits like F305MY, FLL and FPY had high positive genetic and phenotypic correlation among themselves.

The present investigation was carried on 659 Murrah buffaloes, sired by 188 bulls, maintained at Directorate of Livestock Farms, Guru AngadDev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, for the duration of 27 years (1991-2017). The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of non-genetic factors like season and age at first calving on early reproductive and productive traits like age at first calving (AFC), first service period (FSP), first calving interval (FCI) and age at puberty (AAP), 305 day milk yield (305MY), first lactation length (FLL), first peak yield (FPY), first days to attain peak yield (DPY) and first dry period (FDP). Season of calving had highly significant influence on FSP, FCI and FDP, significant effect on AFC, AAP, 305MY, FLL and FPY and non-significant effect on DPY. Age at first calving had non-significant effect on all the studied traits.

There are many computational algorithms available for estimating (co) variance components under multiple trait models. Paternal half-sib correlation is the most commonly used method for estimating genetic parameters of economic traits of buffaloes. The models used are Single trait, ignoring covariances with other traits. The relationship matrices are also ignored. This study was undertaken to estimate genetic parameters of first lactation traits of Nili Ravi buffaloes under a multiple trait animal model. First lactation milk yield was l7% heritable when traits such as age of calving interval were considered. Age at first calving was 18% heritable with very low genetic correlations with other traits. Lactation length, dry period and calving interval were lowly heritable traits. Estimates differed by inclusion or exclusion of traits due to the covariances present among all these traits. A high genetic correlation between mills yield and lactation length (0.74) does not warrant the selection of milk yield as the only trait.

Background: Environmental factors play a major role and influence the economically important traits in dairy animals. The present investigation was undertaken to study the influence of season on production and reproduction traits of graded Murrah buffaloes reared under farm conditions. Methods: The data pertaining to 164 graded Murrah buffaloes was utilized to study influence of seasons on various climatic factors like maximum, minimum and mean temperature, relative humidity (morning and evening), rainfall, sunshine, wind speed, evaporation and production and reproduction traits like lactation length, lactation yield, days to attain peak yield, persistency, calving interval, birth weight and number of lactations. Result: The present investigation revealed significant effect of season on all the meteorological parameters, production and reproduction parameters studied. The correlations among meteorological parameters and production and reproduction traits were also significant.

Background: Notable advancements in the selection indices have led to the development of exceptional breeding strategies, which have eventually led to the selection of elite dairy animals. The comparison of trends is facilitated by their estimation which permit the assessment of progress in a particular trait. The purpose of this study was to investigate genetic trends in economic traits of Murrah buffaloes, which is predominantly present as a high milk producer using the regression method. The study was designed to estimate the phenotypic, genetic and environmental trends, which represent the changes accrued over time and hence, determines the efficiency of breeding programme. Methods: The present study was conducted on 659 Murrah buffaloes, sired by 188 bulls, over a period of 27 years (1991-2017). The economic traits studied were first lactation milk yield (FLMY), first lactation length (FLL), age at first calving (AFC), first calving interval (FCI), first service period (FSP) and first dry period (FDP). The phenotypic trends were obtained as regression of population performance on year and the genetic trends were obtained by Smith method I and II. Result: The results revealed that the phenotypic trends obtained were significant and desirable for all the traits except for first lactation length, which was non-significant. The standard errors obtained by Smith method-I were higher than those obtained from method-II. As the Smith method-II avoids year to year fluctuations in the environment and those of contemporaries, it gives more realistic estimate as compared to the first method with lower standard error.

The data pertinent to lactational performance traits on Murrah buffaloes calved during period 1987 to 2002, progeny of 52 sires maintained at Buffalo Research Centre, LLR University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Hisar were considered. The estimates of heritability were obtained low to moderate for almost all lactational performance traits. All the first lactation traits viz., AC1, SP, CI, MY, LL, PY, DAPY and MY/LL had moderate to high positive genetic correlations among themselves except PY with CI and DAPY with AC1, which is negative. Age at calving (AC2) had moderate positive genetic correlation with second lactational performance traits like SP, MY, LL, PY, MY/LL and MY/CI and had negative correlations with DAPY and DP. Moreover, third lactational traits like milk yield, LL, PY, DAPY, MY/LL and MY/CI had high positive genetic correlations among themselves. However, age at calving during fourth lactation had positive genetic correlations with all the traits except CI, DAPY and DP which had negative genetic correlations with it. It is inferred that information on sip performance and other relatives coupled with better husbandry practices would be required to bring desirable improvement in these lactational performance traits.

Background: The estimates of genetic parameters are useful in determining the appropriate method of selection that could further be implemented in the breed improvement programmes. The present study was, therefore, conducted to estimate the genetic parameters (heritability, genetic and phenotypic correlations) for monthly test day (TD) milk yields, peak yield (PY) and first lactation 305 days milk yield (FL305DMY) in Murrah buffaloes.Methods: Paternal half-sib correlation method was carried out by least-squares maximum likelihood programme to estimate genetic parameters of first lactation 4,209 and 408 records of monthly test day milk yield and peak yield, respectively, of 408 Murrah buffaloes (sired by 62 bulls) calved in between 1993 and 2017 at ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal.Result: Heritability of FL305DMY and peak yield was estimated as 0.35±0.17 and 0.33±0.16, respectively. Heritability estimates for mid-lactation monthly test day milk yields were found to be moderate. Genetic correlation of monthly test day milk yields with FL305DMY was positive and highly significant for TD-4 to TD-9 and TD-11. Peak yield showed high genetic and phenotypic association with FL305DMY. High genetic and phenotypic correlation among monthly test day milk yields, peak yield and FL305DMY suggested that TD-4 to TD-9 and TD-11 test day milk yields and peak yield could be used for the selection of elite animals.

Present study was carried out with the aim to determine the effect of genetic and non-genetic factors on milk production efficiency traits and their genetic control. Data on milk production efficiency traits i.e. total milk yield per day of lactation length and total milk yield per day of calving interval in Jersey crossbred animals maintained at organized herd of ICARNational Dairy Research Institute, Eastern Regional Station, Kalyani, Nadia, West Bengal spread over 29 years (1986-2014) were analyzed in the study. The overall least-squares means of total milk yield per day of lactation length and total milk yield per day of calving interval were estimated as 6.97±0.21 and 6.02±0.23 kg/day, respectively. The data was grouped into different sub-classes of season of calving, period of calving, parity and genetic group of animals. The random effect of sire had shown significant (p<0.01) influence on milk production efficiency traits. Various environment factors significantly affected the milk production efficiency traits indicating the scope of improvement in management of these crossbred animals. The heritability estimates of 0.54 for TMY/LL and 0.63 for TMY/CI were high in magnitude which suggests that fast genetic progress can be made, if these animals are selected based on the milk production efficiency traits.

The present study was carried out in Deoni, the dual purpose cattle breed of Southern India, maintained at NDRI herd, SRS, Bengaluru. Mean phenotypic performances for the traits of age at first calving (AFC), first service period (FSP), first lactation milk yield (FLMY) and first lactation length (FLL) were estimated as 42.90 ± 0.49 months, 179.00 ± 6.3 days, 643.08 ± 25.16 kg and 178.24 ± 4.41 days respectively. Significant effect of parity was found on AFC and FSP. Effect of period of birth, period of calving and season of calving was found to be significant on FSP. Significant effect of period of birth, period of calving, classes of AFC and FLL were found on FLMY. The heritability of first lactation milk yield was estimated as 0.38 ± 0.29. Phenotypic correlation of FLMY with FLL (0.88 ± 0.02) was found to be highly significant (p Lass Than 0.01).

Records of high grade or purebred Holsteins in 62 herds on DHIA recording in Puerto Rico were used to determine phenotypic correlations of lactation length, days dry prior to lactation, days open during lactation, and interval from previous parturition (calving interval) to lactation, milk and fat yields, and fat percent. Both milk and fat yields had a significant (P < .05) positive phenotypic correlation with lactation length, calving interval, and days open (0.178 to 0.658), hut fat percent had a low relation to these traits (-0.023 to +0.014). Lactation length, dry period, days open, and calving interval were regressed on milk yield, fat yield, and fat percent. The combined contribution of these variables to variation in milk yield was 44.4%. Days open, days dry, and calving interval accounted for only 13.4% of the variation in milk yield. Days dry and days open together accounted for 9.6% of the variation, and days dry, plus calving interval, made up 6.0%, of the variation. The values for fat yield were slightly lower but followed a similar pattern as for milk yield. The four variables combined contributed only 0.23% to the variance in fat percent. Total milk yield and fat yield were inf1uenced by lactation length, calving interval, and days dry in descending order of magnitude. Days open had comparatively little influence on either milk or fat yields. Length of dry period influenced fat percent more than any other variable but to little extent. Since the majority of the variation in milk and fat yields attributed to the four variables was due to lactation length, it appears that in Puerto Rico selection with emphasis on lactation yields is unlikely to decrease fertility.
