Critical consciousness of Secondary School Students: An Investigative Survey

The whole human race is travelling through an age of exploitation, social, political, economic, cultural and so on. All these ill-treatments influence the daily life of the common man as a considerable issue. Critical consciousness of a person significantly affects the situation. It enables man to critically analyze the structural oppression and to change inequalities within their sociopolitical environments (Freire, 1973, 1993) through critical reflection and critical action. At the same time it keeps them away from victimization. The society expects rattling renovations from the new generation which is the only way for structural improvement of the milieu. All that depends on the critical consciousness of the imminent generation. Hence the study focuses on the mensuration of critical consciousness of secondary school students who represent the impending generation. At the same time the study values the effectiveness of prevailing educational system of the state in developing critical consciousness as the system is said to be rooted in Freirian ideas and concepts and giving prominence to the development of critical consciousness. The present study attempts to chalk out the level of Critical Consciousness among secondary school students of Kerala. Survey method is adopted for the study. Sample constitutes 125 students of standard eighth. Critical consciousness Scale developed by the investigators is used for the data collection. The survey reveals mediocrity of Critical Consciousness among the secondary school students.

The internal market of the EU comprises an area with no internal borders, in which a free flow of persons, goods, services and capital has been introduced. Among the main aims of creating the common market were: lowering of prices and their turnover, an increase in availability and competitiveness of services and making unrestricted movement within the union possible. This was aimed to enhance living standards among citizens of member states.Polish citizens are now enjoying these freedoms. As a teacher of entrepreneurship, I am interested mainly in entrepreneurship among young people, and in this particular case, in the way they are taking advantage of the opportunities created by Poland’s accession to the EU. In order to become better acquainted with the opinions of young Poles’ on the above mentioned topics, a survey was conducted among my secondary school students. As a result, I learned about the plans of secondary school final year students concerning further education or the search for employment, including the possibility of finding work abroad. Similar research was conducted in 2006 and 2007, presenting the opportunity to compare the results. The most im­portant conclusions resulting from the comparison are the following: the students are closely following the economic situation of Poland and the EU, and are adapting their plans according to the changes currently taking place.

The current COVID-19 pandemic affecting nearly all nations of the world have had a profound impact on education. In Nigeria, as the cases of infection continue to increase and the extension of measures to curb the spread of the virus now points to the fact that schools are not physically resuming anytime soon. This study examined the extent to which the COVID-19 pandemic measures have affected the educational developmentof secondary school students in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. Using the descriptive survey method, data was collected from a sample of 400 samples from a population of 191,630 of Calabar South, Cross River State. The sample size was determined using the Slovin Sample Size Formula. The sample was selected using the stratified, purposive and random sampling technique. the instrument of data collection is a semi-structured questionnaire. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics and Simple Lineal Regression at 0.05 level of significance. Result revealed a significant negative effect of the COVID-19 pandemic measures on the educational development of secondary school students in Calabar South, Cross River State, Nigeria. the study recommends amongst others that the Nigerian government need to copy from other developed nation by partnering with its postal service to deliver worksheets to students in their home especially in low-income families that cannot afford computers.

The literary interest is to be measured and an inventory is prepared for that. In the present inventory students point out whether they like the activity, like it strongly, dislike or strongly dislike. To construct and standardize literary interest inventory for higher secondary school students. To investigate the significant difference in the literary interest of the students between the sub-groups on gender, area, stream, type of school, standard and components of interest inventory. 3119 higher secondary school students is population. Hence survey method was suitable for the present study. The steps of the construction of the inventory are as follows. Items having t- value more than 1.96 and r-value more than 0.20 were selected. Thus, out of the 100 items, 80 items were selected in the final form of the inventory. The reliability of the inventory was established via test-retest method and split-half method. For establishing criterion validity The Teacher Criterion scale that depict various literary activities that can be carried out in higher secondary schools. The null hypotheses were tested using t-test and f-test. Significant difference is observed in the literary interest of the students with reference to gender. Girls are more inclined towards the literary interest than the boys. Rural students show more interest in literature than the urban students. Students of arts stream show more interest in literature than the students of commerce students and students of science stream show more interest in literature than the students of both streams. Significant difference is students with reference to type of school. Students of grant-in-aid schools show more interest in literature than the students of non-grant-in aid schools.

Purpose – In the present century the need and importance of understanding the emotional intelligence of the learner has been grown among the educationists. This is especially true and more prevalent in professions that require the employees to be highly emotionally intelligent such as in the teaching profession. In this study Emotional Intelligence, School Environment and Academic Achievement of secondary school students was probed to find the relationship between and among Emotional nature, School climate and outcomes of standard IX and X students. Methodology - In this study the Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire, School Environment Scale (SES) is used. The investigator used stratified random sampling technique for selecting the sample. The study will adopt a Normative Survey Method. The variables studied are the Emotional Intelligence, School Environment and Academic Achievement. Emotional Intelligence Scale developed and validated by the Balasubramanain and Shanty in 2005 is used for the study. Further School Environment questionnaire developed and validated by the Shanty Jose 2009 is used for the study. The academic achievement scores obtained by the student is used for analysing the learning outcome. Findings - Finding shows from the study shows that there is a high level of Emotional Intelligence, school environment and academic achievement of secondary school students. No significant differences found between and among Emotional Intelligence, School Environment and Academic Achievement with respect to the variables gender, class, type of institutions, locality and medium of instruction. There is a significant relationship exists between and among Emotional Intelligence, school environment and academic achievement and its sub variables. Significance - Emotion as the basis of all behaviours and activities and so is directly related to all human nature and achievements. Emotions are source of motivation, source of learning,source of strength and endurance to body. Emotional intelligence is being able to understand one's one behaviour and to use this to guide their action. Understanding the emotional intelligence of learner will help to analyse the academic performance of individual learner and to provide them useful support.

Background & Aim: Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection with high mortality rate though its prevention is now possible through vaccination. The study determined the knowledge and acceptance of HPV Vaccine among Secondary School students in Queens Model secondary school Enugu Methods & Material: The study utilized a quantitative descriptive survey method. Sample size of 368 students was determined using the power analysis at 95% confidence interval and 5% error margin. Stratified sampling method including proportionate sampling was used to select respondents from different classes to ensure representativeness. Data was collected using questionnaire developed by the researchers with a reliability of 0.79 Cronbach alpha after pre-test and data was analyzed with the aid of SPSS version 20 using descriptive statistics of frequencies and percentages. Results: Only 51(13.86%) of the respondents have heard of HPV vaccine. Majority 97.3% were willing to receive a vaccine that can prevent cervical cancer and 98.1% respondents agreed to recommend a vaccine that can prevent cervical cancer for others for fear of death and concern for their safety. Conclusion: Health education on HPV vaccine should be made available to young girls to enable them take advantage of this service before the resumption of sexual activities.

Attachment styles adopted by parents are essential in development of adolescent psychosocial wellbeing. This phenomenon is more profound in blended families where there are multiple relationships that can lead to many challenges. However, with appropriate attachment styles adopted by step parents such challenges can be mitigated. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of attachment styles on adolescents’ self-esteem among secondary school students from blended family in Kiambu County, Kenya. Attachment theory by Bowlby guided this study. The study adopted a mixed method approach, descriptive causal effect design and pragmatic paradigm to guide the study. Multi-stage sampling method and inclusive /exclusive criteria were used. Firstly the study adopted survey method as the sampling technique because the total population of adolescents that came from blended families was unknown. Simple random sampling was used to select 9 schools and also determine the 5 classes to be sampled in each of these schools. The 5 classes had a population of 55 students each. A short questionnaire with demographic data of students was issued to all the students (2475) in a bid to elicit the adolescents from the said classes that came from blended families in the 9 schools. A total number of 208 adolescents from blended families in the 9 schools was elicited and this was considered a sufficient sample size. In addition, simple random sampling was used to sample 24 respondents to form 4 focus groups while purposive sampling was used to sample 4 counsellors from 9 schools for in-depth interview. Data was collected using questionnaires, counsellors’ interview schedule and focus group discussions. Inventory for Parent and Peer Attachment Scale and Rosenberg Scales were used as measuring tools. Data was analysed through descriptive statistics, statistical assumption tests, correlation tests- T- test and ANOVA analysis while qualitative data was analysed by use of narrative analysis. Findings were presented in form of tables while interview data was presented in narrative form. Permission to conduct the study was obtained from the National Council for Science and Technology, the Kiambu County Government, Ethical approval was sought from accredited IERC (Institutional Ethics Review Committee) as well as a written informed consent from the school administration. Results indicated that attachment styles adopted by step parents influence the establishment of adolescent self- esteem. The study will benefit Ministry of Education, counsellors, parents, families and society.

With special reference to Maldives the secondary school student’s academic achievement is studied in the present study in relation to their problem solving ability and examination anxiety. In the present study descriptive survey method was used to obtain pertinent and precise information. The objectives of the study were to explore the relationship between academic achievement and examination anxiety and the relationship between academic achievement and problem solving ability. Study also evaluated the difference of female and male student’s academic achievement, problem solving ability and examination anxiety. The sample of the study consists of 200 secondary school students of Maldives. 100 males and 100 females were randomly selected to participate in the study. Two standardized questionnaire and previous years mark sheet of the participants collected as data for the research. Examination Anxiety scale and Problem Solving Ability scale were administered on 10 different secondary schools of Maldives. The study concluded that there exists no significant difference between male and female students in academic achievement, problem solving ability and examination anxiety. The study also revealed that there exists a positive correlation between academic achievement and problem solving ability and also showed that there exists a negative correlation between examination anxiety and academic achievement.

Adjustment problem has impacted on student activities, behavior, health and education in general. The study aimed to examine the adjustment problem and its impact on achievement in mathematics among secondary school students. The investigator adopted survey method to study the impact of adjustment problem and its impact on achievement in mathematics among secondary school students. For this study a sample of 300 secondary school students from four Govt and Private schools which are situated in Dindigul district in Tamil Nadu were selected by the investigator using simple random sampling technique. The findings reveal that there is significant mean score difference in adjustment problems and its impact on academic achievement in mathematics among secondary school students.

The present aimed to investigate the academic achievement of adolescents in relation to parental encouragement. The respondents were secondary school students of district Baramulla of Kashmir. A sample of 200 secondary school students (N=100 boys and 100 girls) by employing simple random sampling. Descriptive survey method was employed; Parental Encouragement scale and Total scores of students in previous class were taken as measure of academic achievement of secondary school students, t-test and multiple correlation were employed to analyze the data. The study revealed that (a)there exists significant relationship between academic achievement and Parental Encouragement of students, (b) there is significant difference in Academic Achievement of Boys and Girls, (c) show that significant difference in Parental Encouragement of Boys and Girls students, (d) shows that the boys of urban areas achieve good Academic Achievement as compare to the boys of rural area, and(e) shows that the Girls of urban areas achieve good Academic Achievement as compare to the Academic Achievement of Girls of rural area.

The choice of the university course to attend and therefore indirectly the professions connected to it, constitutes a complex operation for a student who finishes secondary school (Vulperhorst, 2020). This choice becomes more difficult if we are talking about courses of study that train border professions, as in the case of university courses in the socio-psycho- pedagogical field, assimilated, in the common feeling, to the point of confusing the borders. The accompaniment of secondary school students oriented towards these professions requires adequate tools for exploring the same, tools that allow them to analyze the congruence between their interests, skills, personal attitudes and the chosen professional profiles. For this purpose we have built and validated a tool for socio-psycho-pedagogical professions, to be used in differential orientation paths for students who need assistance in the discrimination of the paths that lead to the training of educators, teachers, psychologists and social workers. We will start the contribution with an analysis of the dysfunctional choice mechanisms that most typically lead to inappropriate choices in the study paths indicated, to then arrive at illustrating the original tool.
