BACKGROUND Smoking tobacco, drinking alcohol, and chewing betel quid are health-risk behaviors for several diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes, with severe impacts on health. However, health care providers often have limited time to assess clients’ behaviors regarding smoking tobacco, drinking alcohol, and chewing betel quid and intervene, if needed. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to develop a Web-based survey system; determine the rates of tobacco-smoking, alcohol-drinking, and betel-quid-chewing behaviors; and estimate the efficiency of the system (time to complete the survey). METHODS Patients and their family members or friends were recruited from gastrointestinal medical–surgical, otolaryngology, orthopedics, and rehabilitation clinics or wards at a medical center in northern Taiwan. Data for this descriptive, cross-sectional study were extracted from a large series of research studies. A Web-based survey system was developed using a Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP stack solution. The Web survey was set up to include four questionnaires: the Chinese-version Fagerstrom Tolerance Questionnaire, the Chinese-version Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, the Betel Nut Dependency Scale, and a sociodemographic form with several chronic diseases. After the participants completed the survey, the system automatically calculated their score, categorized their risk level for each behavior, and immediately presented and explained their results. The system also recorded the time each participant took to complete the survey. RESULTS Of 782 patient participants, 29.6% were addicted to nicotine, 13.3% were hazardous, harmful, or dependent alcohol drinkers, and 1.5% were dependent on chewing betel quid. Of 425 family or friend participants, 19.8% were addicted to nicotine, 5.6% were hazardous, harmful, or dependent alcohol drinkers, and 0.9% were dependent on chewing betel quid. Regarding the mean time to complete the survey, patients took 7.9 minutes (SD 3.0; range 3-20) and family members or friends took 7.7 minutes (SD 2.8; range 3-18). Most of the participants completed the survey within 5-10 minutes. CONCLUSIONS The Web-based survey was easy to self-administer. Health care providers can use this Web-based survey system to save time in assessing these risk behaviors in clinical settings. All smokers had mild-to-severe nicotine addiction, and 5.6%-12.3% of patients and their family members or friends were at risk of alcohol dependence. Considering that these three behaviors, particularly in combination, dramatically increase the risk of esophageal cancer, appropriate and convenient interventions are necessary for preserving public health in Taiwan.

Abstract Background National-level prevalence of tobacco use and betel quid chewing, and associated socio-demographic factors were estimated using first-ever, Myanmar Demographic Health Survey, 2015–16. Methods Questions about tobacco smoking, smokeless tobacco use, and betel quid chewing were used to create outcome variables such as tobacco smoking, smokeless tobacco use, and ‘dual use’ (tobacco use and betel quid chewing). Sex-stratified weighted prevalence rates, distribution by socio-demographic factors were presented. Association of demographic factors with tobacco and/or betel quid chewing was assessed by multinomial logistic regression. Results Among men, prevalence (%) of tobacco use and betel quid chewing was 40.9 (95% CI 38.1, 42.1) and 58.9 (95% CI 56.3, 61.6) respectively. Among women tobacco use was 3.7 (95% CI 2.0, 4.3) and betel quid chewing 18.2 (95% CI 16.4, 20.0). Among men prevalence of either tobacco or betel quid and ‘dual use’ was 50.4 (95% CI 48.5, 52.3) and 25.0 (95% CI 23.1, 26.8) respectively, whereas among women the corresponding rates were 17.9 (95% CI 16.2, 19.6) and 2.0 (95% CI 1.6, 2.9). Smokeless tobacco use was low (< 5%) in both sexes. Tobacco use and/or betel quid chewing was associated with age, wealth, marital status, and occupation in both sexes. However, the effect sizes were much larger among women for wealth groups. People of older age and lower wealth had a higher odds of being a tobacco user and/or betel quid chewer. Conclusions In Myanmar, prevalence of both tobacco use and betel quid chewing was high particularly among men. Tobacco control interventions should be strictly implemented and ‘dual use’ of both tobacco and betel quid should also be urgently addressed.

Abstract Background: Thailand has recently experienced large cross-border migration from nearby countries, in particular from Myanmar that have different lifestyle and health behaviors compared with the local community. The aim of this study was to explore the prevalence of health-risk behaviors and related factors amongst Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand. Methods: The cross-sectional secondary data analysis was performed by using the primary data from questionnaire survey obtained from Samut Sakhon Hospital. This study explored the health-risk behaviors amongst 1,205 Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand by using a structured questionnaire, and analyzing the related factors by using logistic regression. Results: Lack of exercise was considered to be the most common unhealthy behavior (81.5%) followed by smoking (22.5%), betel quid chewing (18.9%) and alcohol drinking (10.2%). Advancing age (AOR = 1.03, 95%CI 1.02-1.05)) and being male (AOR = 8.29, 95%CI 5.54-12.40)) were significant risk factors for workers having a smoking habit. Additionally, being Mon ethnic led to a lower chance of having a smoking habit compared with the Burmese ethnic group (AOR= 0.518, 95% CI: 0.315-0.851). The odds of having a smoking habit was four times greater in workers who drank alcohol (AOR = 4.08, 95%CI 2.58-6.47)). Additionally, odds of drinking alcohol increased with advancing age, 1.03 (95%CI 1.00-1.05), male gender, 9.30 (95%CI 4.39-19.73), having a smoking habit, 4.23 (95%CI 2.67-6.70) and being a fisherman, 3.08 (95%CI 1.51-6.29). Conclusions: The findings can be used for developing appropriate policies, special health promotion programs and mass communication to prevent treated diseases in migrant workers. Keywords : Exercise, Smoking, Alcohol drinking, Betel quid chewing, Myanmar migrant workers
