BACKGROUND Hemophilic ankle arthropathy is manifested by degenerative functional alterations and chronic pain. Myofascial release techniques are used to treat soft tissue adhesions, relieve pain, and reduce tissue sensitivity. OBJECTIVE This study aims to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a protocol using self-myofascial release with a foam roller to be applied in patients with hemophilic ankle arthropathy. METHODS Patients with ankle arthropathy (N=70) will be recruited, enrolled, and assigned to one of two groups—experimental or control—in a 1:1 allocation ratio. Patients will be recruited from 5 centers in different regions of Spain. Patient data will be collected at baseline, posttreatment, and follow-up. The primary outcome will be frequency of ankle joint bleeding (self-reported). The secondary outcomes will be ankle range of motion (measured with a digital goniometer); joint pain (measured with a visual analog scale and an algometer); joint status (measured using the Hemophilia Joint Health Score); muscle strength (measured with a dynamometer); functionality of lower limbs (measured using the 6-minute walking test); activity (self-reported); and muscle flexibility (measured using the fingertip-to-floor test). The treatment program includes 11 exercises that must be administered bilaterally. A mobile app will be developed where each patient will be able to observe the exercises to be carried out. Each session will last 15 minutes with 5 physiotherapy sessions per week for a period of 3 months. It is expected that patients with hemophilia who receive the foam roller intervention will show improvement in mobility, pain, and status of the ankle joint; muscle strength; and function in the lower extremities. RESULTS The study has been approved by the institutional review board of the University of Murcia. Patient recruitment will begin in September 2020, and the intervention period will last until June 2021. Data collection will take place between September 2020 and October 2021. CONCLUSIONS This protocol describes a randomized clinical trial to examine the safety and efficacy of a self-myofascial release intervention using a foam roller in patients with hemophilic ankle arthropathy. O objetivo foi verificar a influência do excesso de peso na força muscular e na funcionalidade de tronco de mulheres jovens. Estudo analítico transversal, com 54 mulheres de 18 a 30 anos, com excesso de peso (n=25), e eutróficas (n=29). A força muscular de tronco foi avaliada pelo dinamômetro isocinético e a funcionalidade de tronco e membros inferiores através do Bunkie Test. A análise dos dados foi realizada por meio do programa SPSS (Sciences Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). Como resultado, o presente estudo identificou que as mulheres com excesso de peso conseguem gerar pico de torque absoluto na 1º série (p=0,023), na 2º série (p=0,009), e no impulso na 2º série (p=0,009) maiores que as mulheres eutróficas. No entanto, quando o pico de torque foi analisado proporcionalmente ao peso corporal, estes valores foram menores, não sendo encontrada diferença entre os grupos (p0,05). Para o Bunkie Test, o grupo com excesso de peso apresentou pior desempenho na funcionalidade, principalmente nos movimentos de extensão, em decúbito dorsal, dos membros inferiores direito (p=0,011), esquerdo (p= 0,004) e na manutenção do tronco em decúbito lateral direito (p=0,008). Conclui-se que o excesso de peso pode alterar diretamente a força muscular e interferir na funcionalidade de tronco de mulheres jovens, sugerindo um desequilíbrio muscular em tronco e membros inferiores.Palavras-chave: Força Muscular. Funcionalidade. THE INFLUENCE OF OVERWEIGHT ON MUSCLE STRENGTH AND FUNCTION IN YOUNG WOMENABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to verify the influence of overweight on muscle strength and functionality in young women. This is a cross-sectional analytical study that was conducted with 54 women aged 18 and 30 years – twenty-five (25) were overweight and twenty-nine (29) were eutrophic. Muscle strength was assessed by an isokinetic dynamometer, whereas functionality was assessed by the Bunkie Test. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS program (Sciences Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). As a result, the present study identified that overweight women can generate absolute peak torque in the 1st grade (p = 0.023), in the 2nd grade (p = 0.009), and in the 2nd highest grade (p = 0.009) than eutrophic women. However, when the peak torque was analyzed proportionally to the body weight, these values were lower, and no difference was found between the groups (p 0.05). For the Bunkie Test, the overweight group presented worse performance in the functionality, especially in the extension movements, in the dorsal decubitus position, of the right lower limbs (p = 0.011), left (p = 0.004) and in the maintenance of the decubitus trunk right side (p = 0.008). It is concluded that overweight can directly affect muscle strength and interfere with the trunk function of young women, suggesting a muscle imbalance in the trunk and lower limbs.Keywords: Muscle Strength. Background. Joints or muscles dysfunctions more often occur not only in elderly but also middle aged people. The problem becomes chronic and causes longtermed pain, lack of functional mobility. One of the most affected areas of human musculoskeletal zones is shoulder area (Pan, 2016). Purpose. Evaluate myofascial release techniques for pain and function in patients with chronic shoulder pain. Methods. There were 12 patients chosen who were randomly divided into ischemic compression and friction groups. We evaluated pain, arm function, muscle strength and range of motion. Results. In ischemia group, pain after the treatment decreased (before 5.33 ± 0.81; after 3 ± 1.41, p = 0.01). Function of arm improved (before 42.83 ± 8.23; after 62.5 ± 6.89, p = 0.01). All humerus range of motions and strength of muscles improved (p < 0.05), comparing results before and after the treatment. In friction group pain after the treatment did not change (before 5.83 ± 0.98; after 4.16 ± 2.63, p = 0.252). Arm function improved (before 42.5 ± 4.84; after 56 ± 5.47, p = 0.006). Friction improved (p < 0.05) humerus flexion, abduction, external rotation range of motions and muscles strength of humerus abductors. Conclusions. Ischemic compression had signifcant effect on reducing shoulder pain, improving range of motion and muscle strength of humerus movers. Friction technique did not have effects on reducing pain, but had significant effects on humerus flexion, abduction, external rotation range of motions and increased muscle strength of humerus abductors. When comparing results after ischemia and friction between groups, no signifcant difference was found in treating shoulder pain, range of motion of humerus movements and muscle strength of humerus movers.Keywords: myofascial realease, friction, ischemia.

The Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-19) originated from Wuhan, China and has affected globe since 2019. The virus spread to India in January, 2020. It is highly contagious. In its severe form, the victims of the virus suffered from symptoms such as breathing difficulties, fever, weakness, loss of taste and smell, amongst others. Patients were put on mechanical ventilators and as a result, the requirement of the role of cardio-respiratory physiotherapists became more and more essential. Even after weaning off from the ventilators and being detected Coronavirus negative, the role of the physiotherapists still remained indispensable in order to bring about improvement in the muscle strength of the affected weakened muscles, especially for patients whose movements were limited for extended periods of times due to being dependent on the ventilators; physiotherapists were also required to bring about improvement in the lung capacities and function, to teach gait training for those who find it difficult to walk, to improve in-coordination and overall allow the patients to come back to normal and carry out all the ADL independently and well. He had a severe difficulty in breathing and coughing, along with a generalized weakness all over his body, specifically both his lower limbs. He was admitted in the ICU immediately and was on mechanical ventilator. After all the physiotherapy sessions, the patient was able to carry out his activities of daily living independently; he regained his muscle strength and improved his coordination and ability to walk with a proper gait. He was also able to breathe independently with adequate respiratory muscle strength; and did not feel fatigued as quickly as he used to when he was detected positive for Coronavirus.

Context: Ankle proprioception is one of the crucial components contributing to postural control. Although the effects of Mulligan’s mobilization with movement (MWM) on postural control, ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (DFROM), and muscle strength in people with ankle disorders have previously been investigated, it is still unclear whether ankle MWM had ability to change postural control, DFROM, and muscle strength. Objectives: To reveal pure effects of MWM on postural control, ankle DFROM, and muscle strength in healthy individuals. Design: A prospective, randomized, double-blinded, sham-controlled study. Setting: Musculoskeletal laboratory, Dokuz Eylul University, Turkey. Participants: Forty students in good health recruited from a local university. Interventions: Mulligan’s MWM or sham application over ankle joint. Main Outcome Measures: The primary outcome was postural control and measured using limits of stability (LOS) test. The secondary outcomes were tibialis anterior muscle strength and ankle DFROM, which were measured using handheld dynamometer and weight-bearing lunge test, respectively. All outcomes were assessed before and immediately after intervention. Results: Left and right ankle DFROM and LOS overall score showed a statistically significant improvement compared with first measurement in both groups (P < .05). However, LOS time was significantly improved only in the MWM group (P < .05). Statistical analyses of between-group mean differences showed that Mulligan’s MWM provided significant improvement in the LOS in forward–right direction compared with sham application (P = .03). Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the application of Mulligan’s MWM on ankle joint might be beneficial to improve postural control in forward right direction in individuals with healthy ankles. On the other hand, both MWM and sham application were able to increase overall postural control and DFROM, and MWM had no superiority over sham application for increasing these 2 variables.
